I manually checked for the update and got it. GPS is definitely improved, but I suspect some will still not be satisfied. It definitely locks faster and better-- previously I never got good locks, even with the supl workarounds etc. Now it's locking within about 30s and is giving me claimed 10m accuracy in maps, even indoors, whereas before maps pretty much always had a giant blue circle around the location, and in fact, my actual location was usually not even within the circle.

So I took it out for a quick walk running MyTracks. Previously, I didn't really have the patience to wait for it to lock, it took so long. Now it locks, but the track was kind of a mess. It was in the ballpark, but it had me off to one side of the path I was on, then it jumped to the other side, then it took a right turn (without me) and went into someone's house. To be fair, I am in a very heavily wooded area, and I also have a Garmin Forerunner 201 which I use for jogging, and although it's better, it's not wildly better. I think this is just a challenging GPS environment because of the trees. I'll have to try it out on the road when I get a chance where the tree cover is less and see how it does.

But the behavior is enough different from before that I have to conclude that this update does indeed contain what Samsung considers to be the fix. And that's consistent with the announcements they've been making on twitter, etc. Whether it's actually good enough to make everyone happy, time will tell.
 
I did the update manually. I am stock except for GPS setting tweaks per XDA. The install was smooth with no errors.

I did not change my GPS setting back to stock prior to the update. I can no longer access the GPS setting screen. The access number does nothing now. I have no idea what my setting are with the update applied.

For me, like many others, my GPS has never worked effectively. In a car it would take forever to get a lock and jump in and out constantly. Sometimes it would never lock. The best accuracy I ever achieved outside with clear skies was 32 meters. Most often it was 60+ or 100+ which is useless in an urban area. I never got a better accuracy than 32m. Never...

So I tested the update after lunch and I can say that at least today, at that moment, my GPS performance was GREAT! I got a lock in Google maps in 10-15s and drove around a bit and never lost the lock. My accuracy was 5m. This is a huge improvement! I launched and GPS Test and almost instantly had 11 satellites and 11 in use. I know that this GPS can be temperamental and be great for one day but then crap the next but this is the best it has ever been for me. I only pray it stays great. Fingers crossed...
 
Received update by manually checking like everyone else. Never received a text from AT&T. I haven't really played around with it yet but one thing that drove me nuts was how slow the the sleep/awake button responded when trying to wake up the phone. Unfortunately it is still slow...

**EDIT** I'm all stock. Am waiting for froyo to mess the phone in any way...yes I'm willing to wait.
 
still having trouble connecting to the at&t server. ive tried to do a software update for the past month now and everytime ive done it, it says unable to connect to at&t server. i was rooted and actually unrooted and did a hard reset and i still can not connect to the server. im guessing im pretty much screwed from gettin the update...damnit!

I manually tried to get too and it did get and download an update, but then restarted the phone and then got a message saying the update was not applied and now won't let me check again unless i reset my date, the 24hr check in effect. Oh well guess I will wait for them to push it. :D

same thing happened to me

i moved the date up and tried it again and the exact same thing happened..

i just rooted and lagfixed it yesterday

EDIT: undid the ryanza lagfix and root and the udpate installed successfully

now im wondering if i should reapply it
 
I saw that earlier but what bothers is that they don't say the firmware version that will resolve the issue. This general statement is total BS, typical Samsung once again.
 
Just went for a walk with the firmware with the "fixed" GPS. It is improved but hardly fixed. My 2 year old iPhone 3G would be way more accurate. I would ignore the first part of the route from the Captivate. I did wait for an official lock (GPS symbol stopped blinking), but the circle area was still large.

I walked along a path and the circle around me became very small, and I walked back along a road back to where I started. The Captivate was a good 100 feet off, despite the GPS circle being very small for most of my walk. The second route I put in was manually entered of where I actually walked.

GPS never got any satellites before, now GPS gets one satellite after 3 minutes being outside and never locks.

I am extremely disappointed because my I used the GPS on my Nokia N95 all of the time and it was incredible. Lock never took more than 15 seconds, even in side my house, and the accuracy was great. I am considering exchanging my Captivate for another because I think I may have gotten a bad GPS. My GPS has never worked, my wife's worked at one time, but doesn't now. I will update her phone when I get home.

Anyone using a case that is getting a good GPS signal? It shouldn't matter if you have a case but you never know. I have the Body Glove case.
 
I manually found and successfully installed the update to my phone this morning, phone seems more responsive and overall seems better in my opinion.
 
Just got the new update. Stock captivate got it Friday. Gps is locking, didn't do it before. Also I have quickoffice now and the new version of YouTube. I tried the gps while walking outside and it was following my every move. Will try the driving navigation later TONIGHT!! I am a little skeptical of Samsung but at least the update has helped me think that they will do the 2.2 update! I'm loving this phone more and more now.
 
I checked manually got the download, but when it updated it said it failed and didnt apply the update.
Im running Unleash the beast V1 and one click lag fix
I undid the lag fix but did not unroot.
 
Rooted, black bar/battery mod, lag fix here. Updated, then failed, but showing JH7. Only difference im seeing is that the build says just Eclair, not Eclair.UCJH7. Any thoughts?
 
What is the most reliable way to test if your GPS is working? I've turned off Use Wireless, but when I open Google Maps and find location, it times out after about 30 seconds and says cannot locate. This is exactly what it used to do before today's update.

Should I use GPS Status? God, I hate this. So annoying to get my hopes up and then have the damn thing still not work.
 
Manually searched and updating now.

Just realized, since I'm not on WiFi, how big is this file? I should probably pause the download and continue it when I get home...
 
Successfully installed the "fix". However, I changed all of my gps settings back to the defaults prior to updating and was wondering for those of you who didn't change your settings, did the fix revert the settings back to the defaults? Should we still try using the MS Based setting, google server, skyhook, etc. after updating????
 
Mine is updating now, but it's hung on 99% 'Download in progress' and I'm irritated that the 3G is being used instead of the wireless - and it's hung - wait, just got the message:

So what does that mean? Wait til they force it? I did this manually.

Off for a walk, cyberlife can wait....wait, I'm getting a new message that a Software update is available - I'll see what happens.

The phone restarted and now a different screen is there, white with a blue progress bar.

A few hangs, now we're back to the AT&T World Phone screen.

A few moments later, phone reboots, the S is on the screen.

Preparing mass storage, then I got a little message at the top that said 'removed external SD card' which is interesting, as I have no SD card.

Now it's back to normal. How do I check for the version number?
 
FYI, you should be able to still access the Lbstestmode using the shortcut for it.

Hold on home screen -> Shortcut -> Activities > Lbstestmode -> First option
 
Manual ("check for update"). GPS locks on much, much faster now. GMaps locked on in less than 10secs. Using GPS Status, I also got a quick lock, followed by 10/10 satellites (something I'd never seen on JF6), however, the error oscillated between 10m & 15m... not so sure that'd be all that accurate for driving...

I got the update. Moved the clock a day forward and it worked. Update stuck at 50% but then continued. Didn't pull sim cardboard after reboot it stayed on the galaxy S screen for a good few minutes. Almost Was gonna pull battery but just left it alone and it finally got to the home screen. I didn't have quick office previously and now its there. Media scan still take a bit but not too bad. GPS is working great. Google map locks on in under 20 seconds. But one thing on Google navigation it still locks on and off. But on Google maps seems more accurate. GPS test shows 49ft accuracy indoors. So I'm Happy with the GPS fix. Thanks Samsung!
