Root Universal 1 Click Eris App Apk - No PCs, No Scripts Needed, EASY

I edited my post #192 and fixed the issue between steps 2 & 3.

You'll have to forgive me. I have been participating on another android forum where the users aren't allowed to edit their posts and I was thinking that it was this forum for some reason. That is why I had asked the moderators to edit as necessary.

You might want to drop in a link to your corrected post at the beginning of each of your uncorrected posts to forward people to your corrected versions further down the thread.

Lately, if I go back and edit something where I think the edit ought to delete things, I just grey things out a little by surrounding those portions of the text with [ COLOR=lightgrey ] [ /COLOR ] tags (without the spaces, of course, so they will actually work). That strikes a balance between readability and continuity of the thread and also alerts the reader that the author changed his mind about something.

Thanks for posting the changes

Tried the One Click Root App and my trackball is not working when in the recovery menu. Tried cleaning it. Nada. I read several posts with code work arounds. I don't trust myself to be that tech savvy, so I'm just going to sit on my unrooted Eris with 2.1 for now. I love this little phone and would hate to brick it cuz I'm an idiot! ;p Thanks again for the great help and patience I received on this forum and also to the creators of the One Click Root App!! :D

Well, if you did the one-click root app, then you do have a custom recovery installed--you are just one step short of actually getting root functionality (and that step, of course, involves using your trackball to flash either the rootme.zip or a custom ROM).

If you ever to change your mind, erisuser1 has written a very nice tutorial showing how to flash a file without using the trackball, but it does involve the use of the Android SDK but it might be a little daunting to the casual user (but it does work ;)). Here's the thread where he posted it: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/163423-flashing-rom-trackball-not-working.html

eu1 and I have discussed what it might take to tweak Amon_RA's recovery to be non trackball-dependent. But this sounds more like a longer-term project on my end (I'm not currently setup or knowledgable enough to be able to do it). Haven't forgotten about it, though.

Cheers!

Thanks again and for the links! I will read them and try to digest them. I may give it a try if I feel a little more comfortable! :)

I'm a total n00b and just rooted using this method...SO simple, It's probably pretty hard for you actually screw this up! All is really takes is about 10 minutes and is very simple!!

Why am I having trouble getting new ROM to Eris after downloading it to my computer. I am missing something. I have the phone rooted.. and have nonsensikal and Kaos Froyo but when I try to get it to the SD card that where nothing happens.

ccgabe,

What exactly do you mean? Are you getting an error or what is your indication that "nothing happens"?

Are you trying to drag and drop it to you phone while its mounted as an external USB device? (you have to copy the file to the top-level of the /sdcard folder (i.e., not into any directories that are listed in Windows Explorer if the phone is mounted at the F:\ or G:\ drive, for example).

A few more details if you can, please.

Thanks... I find the file where is downloaded and then open HTC sync and click on ap installer. But then I cannot get the file to do anything. It is like it is not recognized by installer.

I just downloaded nonsensikal v8.8 to my phone. Going to see what I can do with that. Thought I had ruined the phone earlier, did a wipe of everything and couldn't find a ROM. Rebooted and eventually everything came back to clean new 2.1... less some of my apps.

I don't know anything about HTC Sync (other than using its USB drivers)...what file / app are you trying to install? (its not the NonSensikal or Kaos Froyo ROM that you are trying to install (via HTC Sync) is it?)

You can actually install apps (.apk files) that you didn't get from the Market directly on your phone using something like Astro File Manager...

Good to hear that! Sorry, my previous reply was a smidge slow... :p

Cheers!

Yes one of the two... NonSensikal or Kaos Froyo ROM I trying to install. I am downloading Astro FM, will try and see what I can do with that. Sure appreciate your help. Don't know why I am having such difficulty at this point.

Well, you know you have to flash custom rooted ROMs, right? (its not done with Astro...). Sorry, but I was a little confused by what you are trying to say.

You say you've rooted using the 1-click method? Exactly which steps did you do (i.e., how far did you get?) Did you flash the rootme.zip file in custom recovery?

Yes I used 1-click, I am sure I am rooted. It says I have superuser permissions. I am sure I did the flash rootme.zip in recovery and that is about as far as I have managed to go.

Okay, I'm with you now...:D

You would flash a custom ROM just like you flashed the rootme.zip file (i.e., from when you are booted-up into custom recovery). But, you will almost certainly need to do a Nandroid backup and the requisite wipes before flashing any custom ROM.

Here's the best advice I can give you: read through this post http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html#post1186824 for excellent, detailed information about making a Nandroid backup (which you should do and always do prior to any flashing activities), doing any wipes before you flash a custom ROM (assuming that's what you want to do), and for actually flashing a custom ROM.

You should be aware (if you didn't already) that many (most) custom ROMs have things you need to be aware of. For example, some don't come with all of the Google apps and you need to download and flash those separately. You will have to read through the dev's ROM thread for more information about any gotchas, etc. Also, there are usually some pretty good ROM-specific discussion threads over here on AF and over at XDA (where you probably got your ROMs). Lots of good, relevant information there.

Good luck and I hope this helps (I know the above link will...it doesn't get any better than the information contained therein).

Cheers!

OK.. that was easy enough but when I got to FLASH ZIP from SD card, I clicked it and the only option in step #40 was rootme.zip. I don't get it. I just downloaded Nonsensikal to my SD card I thought but it is not there. Where is it?

You probably haven't yet moved it to the top-level of the /sdcard directory. After you mount your phone at a disk drive to your PC, just drag and drop the file to the drive letter (like F:\ or G:\) that Windows Explorer shows (that's the only place where Amon_RA's custom recovery can find it). You might have moved/copied it to a subfolder like /sdcard/download.

Be sure to do a "safe eject" on the PC before disconnecting the USB cable between your phone and the PC (otherwise, the file you transferred might not have fully transferred all of its buffer contents--the safe eject forces a flush/sync and makes sure there are no pending or open connections).

Alright, I got the nonsensikal 8.8 on the SDCard. When I select it and click to flash, it aborts install with message., Opening package, Verifying update package, E:No signature, (1 files)
E: Verification failed Installation failed

????? Appreciate your patience!

Hey, no problem... It sounds like you have a corrupted file / incomplete download... When you transferred it from your PC to your phone, did you make sure you did a "safe eject"? You will probably have to re-download it again.

Why don't you try downloading this ROM directly via your phone (i.e., from the browser). You would then have to move the file with something like Astro File Manager from your /sdcard/download directory (where the file will most likely be downloaded to) to the /sdcard directory.

Moving a file with Astro is kind of weird...look at this post http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/168250-froyo-rooted-eris.html#post1532748 to see how I instructed another poster how to move a file with Astro. Also, notice the thing about verifying the checksum of your file (there's a link to an app I wrote in that post too if you decide to double-check your file to make sure its whole and uncorrupted (you'll have to have the MD5 sum from the dev's ROM thread to compare it to)).

Good luck!

Thanks again, I did download NonSensikal direct with my Eris. I will try again, maybe a try a different ROM. Is there any particular ROM you might suggest for someone new at this?? I want to try and keep it everything as simple as possible. I have been working on this for a few days and getting pretty familiar with the process, just having problems getting that ROM flashed.

Lots of folks recommend zach.xtr's xtrSense (if you like HTC Sense):

[ROM][GPL][10/4/2010] xtrSENSE4.6 [cache2cache,apps2sd,oc,jit,flash10]-HTC Sense - xda-developers

or xtrROM (without Sense):

[ROM][GPL][10/4/2010] xtrROM4.6 [cache2cache,apps2sd,jit,lwp,oc,flash10] - xda-developers

By the way, please notice that zach.xtr does publish the MD5 checksums for his ROMs just under the download links (a very good practice that the responsible devs do to give you warm and fuzzy feelings)...it a very good idea to verify them to make sure you got the whole file. You can use my app that I referenced for just use Astro File Manager (long-press filename and select details--the MD5 sum will be displayed after a few seconds).

There are just so many to choose from nowadays, but you have to start somewhere, right? :p

Just remember the stuff from erisuser1's excellent post I referenced earlier (http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html#post1186824) about doing the wipes and stuff before you flash anything (and making sure you have a good Nandroid backup beforehand).

Cheers!

scary alien, Thanks to you and your patience and your expertise, I finally managed to flash xtrROM. So far so good, appears very stable and fast.

That was my problem too. No one talked much about the DL and where the file need to be or how to get it there. My Eris runs like it should now. Perfectly happy with it.
