Should You Use a Task Killer?

That's kinda like saying you carry a foot pump around in your car because a tyre is constantly losing air. Leave the pump at home and the tyre goes flat, carry the pump in the car and everything runs fine ('cos you can get stop every hour and 'fix' the problem). You have a fix for the problem, but the cause is still there.

Better to get a new tyre.
 
well the phone is working perfectly fine now! is there a problem with that? is it a problem with you lot?! *I* am happy with the way my phone is working, if it can work better then great...when I'm less busy in life I'll have time to maybe check it out further, but the FACT is at this moment in time MY phone is working alot better with ATK installed and it does exactly what I need it to do.....is that OK with everyone!?! jesus!
 
Hi all

When I first got my desire a few weeks ago and joined this forum, i am sure there was a sticky about not using a task killer app. Can someone please link me to it. Been trying to search it out with no look. Think it was by one of the mods.

I was new to android at the time, but now I would like to know why task killing is a bad idea. I must have shed loads running in the background.

I can vaguely remember the thread in question, but not sure where it is at present.
From what i remember a task killer is not necessary as it uses more power when you have to restart an app from scratch that could be left running in the background, also froyo is pretty good at managing the apps its self.
 
A task killer on froyo is pointless as it does not kill the apps.

If you open internet and go to any site, kill the app, reopen the internet, it will go back to the last site.

On 2.1, it did kill the task, as it always went back to the homepage.

Dude, chill. I seriously doubt that anyone here really cares what you do with your phone, they're just trying to help. I get that you're very busy and important, but what people are trying to point out here is that the time you spent on this forum defending the task killer could have been spent actually fixing the problem. If you don't want to hear feedback about your opinion, don't voice it. Problem solved.

Why must you? It's a common misconception that an Android Task is in some way analogous to a Windows Task. It's not.

Your phone may have many tasks loaded into memory but most will not be "running", as you put it. And in-memory is the best place for them to be if they are actually going to be used any time in the near future.

Unused RAM is useless RAM. This statement can be used universally.

Not sure about ram, the animal.
 
Ok guys, seriously i dont know where this myth/info has come from about having a task killer...I have uninstalled/installed one and have found that the battery life on the phone is alot better with the task killer than without. Things like internet browser/peep/footprints...you know, all apps like that, keep popping up and running or browser stays open after i have used it, but with task killer they don't which in effect saves my battery life more than if they were open.

I also have my task killer on auto close every hour because those darned apps keep popping up and to whoever says "maybe you should delete 3rd party rubbish apps" then if your right i should delete browser, footprints, google search, peep, some more i can't remember...

All im saying is its not only rubbish 3rd party apps that will run, its also official google ones and a the end of the day its a smartphone, im not hating on the aps popping up because thats what smartphones do.

So strange. My battery life jumped immediately. It's still pretty poor but it is a lot better.

The apps aren't "running" (unless they are synching but that can be switched off) they are stored in memory. This actually saves battery life.

As stated above, apps stored in memory aren't actually doing anything (unless you are allowing background synching)

You should try again because maybe it was something else draining your battery?:confused:
 
Its simply about using the TK'er to cancel Apps. (if you want) & leave the important stuff running ! - simple...

Which is pointless as you can do this from settings>applications>manage applications - so why install another app to do something you can already do.

@ widehead - some people just do not believe. Leave them to it I say.

If you have a rogue app - delete it.

trust Android to do the job it was designed to do.

Unless you've set the apps to do work in the background (synch, for example) they are not doing anything.

I have to say that i felel you may have misunderstood what was being said. I may be wrong but I read it as SurfZombie writting that if you are using a task killer to kill bad apps then this is not a reason for a task killer and I would guess that the suggestion would be to get rid of the bad app also.

I have a feeling that surfzombie might have been writting with a certain irony playing focus at why would someone want a task killer in the first place and then follow the thinking. I would say that it was well put by SurfZombie and I would also say the SurfZombie probably shares your opinion about task killers. (please correct my if I am wrong about my assumptions SurfZombie)
