Forced 2.0.1 DROID UPDATE! HOWTO

I get an error:

Installing update...
Verifying current system...
assert failed: apply_patch_check("MTD:boot:2512896:[long string of characters]")
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.

name it "update" not "update.zip"

It's like this is a battle for best instructions, this one was first, and is good enough, if you can't follow this then research for what you need to know.

The thing i dont understand is this,

All the files contained in the Zip file are time stamped 5/4/2009, Very Odd.

Well, I downloaded the file, renamed it to update.zip.

And when I tried to install it, it still messes up! It gives me some error. I just don't understand!

Didn't work. I'm pretty sure it needs to be update.zip.

Redownloaded, still getting the same error. Grr.

Mine didn't work as update.zip. Renamed it to just "update" and it worked fine.

Make sure Windows is showing you file extensions. Otherwise, it may be hiding the .zip extension, giving you a filename of update.zip.zip or other wacky things

Ah forgot if you have hide file extensions on (on your pc) then you just need to rename it "update" if you have them off then rename to "update.zip"

Important point that needs to be added to the top post in threads about this - you need to have file extensions showing when you rename the file, otherwise you effectively name the file update.zip.zip and that's what causes the error mentioned above. When extensions aren't on, it assumes that anything you type in for the file name should go before the extension. Both Windows and OSX have options for this in Explorer and Finder respectively.

I thought people were crazy when they were talking bout their screen being slow or choppy. I thought "sure am glad I got a good one". Guess compared to my Storm 1 it was great but this new update really makes this thing fly. Thanks guys!!!!
