Skype Officially in the Market for the HTC EVO 4G

Guys we finally got an official version of skype in the market

And it could be so much better.

From my understanding, no calls over 3G (haven't tested this yet), no video chat, no app2sd, and the UI in my opinion is lacking any finesse....

It really makes the announcement and downloading the app rather bittersweet.

i have not tested it however the description says one can make call over 3g and wifi...
anyway, its a work in progress. Rome was not built in a day.. AND its free.. give it time to mature...

I don't get it.
Skype without video calls.
So, what's the point of Skype, then ?

No skype in the US unless you are on wifi???

Not free?

That's what I have a laptop for. What's the point???

EDIT: And Skype still hasn't been re-added to Fring either. I just checked by downloading both apps.

Useless crap.

and does no one instant message anymore? lol

In that case Trillian beta is a superior product, along with many others out there that will IM in multiple clients.

The whole point of skype was calling. Now video calling. Fring could do what Skype apparently cant figure out prior to them blocking them.

I am really, really hoping that Google gets in the game with the gchat video. I would like to be able to video chat with my g/f when on the road.

Plus, Skype appears to be down for mobile access. I can login through the web portal, but the mobile app gives an error when trying to sign in.

well im logged into skype on the evo (the "s" is up there in the bar). i only have one person who is on my list and they are offline. the test thing is active and online though.

Kind of a let down that they didn't include video chat in this release but then again I wasn't expecting Skype to release an app this early. I'm sure it will be in future versions.

Im glad to see they are finally moving in the right diection of releasing something for others besides Verizon, just a shame that they are limiting us to calls over wifi and no video chat. It makes me wonder if they are still under contract with Verizon for being exclusive, and this is there way around it for now. Which hopefully when the contract ends, they will allow more features if thats the case.

i too am happy that its even released. I was fearing it would be next year before it went off exclusive to verizon. Im going to keep it on the phone and just look for updates. With only a few phones even having frontfacing cams, the feature still doesnt hold much of a benefit still.

Maybe someone can come up with an app that tricks programs into thinking it's on WiFi when it's on 3G. There were a few apps like this on the iPhone.

I haven't done it myself but I'm fairly certain that if you're calling over wifi via phone or laptop that you'll only incur the 2c/min it takes to call to the US/Canada.
