Handcent all the way! I used Chomp at first and Handcent is 10x better. To me its faster when it loads up and shows all the messages to different people and it is way more customizable.

how do i make handcent my defualt programs and turn off the stock one??

There are a few ways to do it....

If you just installed Handcent or Chomp...and haven't told your phone to use the stock messenging app as the default ...then just tap on any contact's photo in your contact and bring up the mini-contact menu, click on the messenging icon, and it should ask you which SMS app to use form a list of all SMS apps installed on your phone (including Handcent)....pick the app one you want to be the default (make sure to check the box for "always use this one...")

If you've already set a different app as the default, then go into Menu-->Settings and go to Manage Applications. In the list, scroll down until you see whichever SMS app was set as the default (e.g., the stock Messenging app or a different one) and then clear it has the default program using Clear Defaults or whatever the button is called. You can then go to Handcent in the list and make it the default.

Specifically, just tap on any contact's photo in your contact and bring up the mini-contact menu, click on the messenging icon, and it should ask you which SMS app to use form a list....pick the one you want to be the default (make sure to check the box for "always use this one...")

I am brand new to andriod (iPhone defector), and just installed Handcent last night. Does anybody know if you can have a message counter on the icon itself?

(sorry if this has already been answered).

Yes, it does have a message counter on the widget. Congrats on defecting from the crApple phone!!! :D

but that doesn't stop it. it still gets the messages, still loads on startup and still shows unread count on the app icon

You need to uncheck 3 things, auto-retrieve, notifications and delivery reports. Then you won't get double notifications

I had Handcent and then went to ChompSMS. After using CM6 it would always freeze my phone I went back to Handcent. If Stock Messaging had batch and the checkmark selection it would be great.

I prefer Handcent to Chomp for one reason, the sms popup feature for Chomp looks cheesy and Handcents equivalent is nice. Also Handcent always popped up notifications first when I had both installed...
