Root They know how the efuse works? Getting closer to more customr roms?

So it sounds like the whole thing may not be entirely fruitless with the kexec exploit, but it's a far cry from what everyone hoped could be achieved. When the X came out the Milestone people just laughed and shook their collective heads, because they knew what was in store. Bummer. At the moment, though, there's no other phone out there that's just head and shoulders above the X, so switching hardware doesn't sound like it would be that great of a benefit. I'll ride out my contract with the X and just see what happens anyway as there will be some good things coming. Last Moto phone I'll ever buy, though. It's simply crazy the lengths they've gone to to prevent modding and for no real purpose.

dang, i was really optimistic that these guys would get it done. I'll hold out for a few more days to see if there is a reversal or something just in case, but then it looks like then end of the x for me.

Oh well. It was exciting there for a bit lol as long as I can run bloat free flyx and a nice theme on top of it, I'm pleased. Custom roms would have been nice but far from a deal breaker.

Well, we all bought the phone knowing it may never be cracked. In 8 months, I'll see what's the next big thing.

Moto got this far due to the hard 'selling' by the Droid 1 community. We hackers may be a 'small' section of the market, but we are also the tech consultants for others (work, friends, families, etc). Moto is going to lose the mind share it's been rebuilding. I hope they see the light cos other than the fail bootloaders, the DX really a great phone (even blur has some great additions). If someone at Moto Engineering is reading (at Panasonic we were encouraged to read tech forums), give the dev community something they can use.

Hopefully, we'll have Obsidian soon. :D

I too am pretty disappointed, but I am still happy with RubiX. My replacement DX arrived yesterday and is running great. I am very happy with the phone now. Still, this will be the last Moto I ever buy as well.

Didn't everyone know that all the national secrets were stored on this phone and that is what they have made it so hard to crack. :D OK so that is at least what it seems like.

Alright at this point I feel like we need the "Was it over speech" from Animal House. Someone feel free to pull in the youtube clip as I am at work

I am a little disappointed in the set back, but I bought the X knowing it was locked and just felt it was the best phone out there and still feel that way. After coming from WinMo I still could not be happier with what I have.

Well this whole thing was incredibly interesting even though it was quite over my head. It stinks that the bootloader isnt going to be unlocked but what are you going to do. Hopefully CVPCS brings Obsidian soon. More than that I am hoping CVPCS' work will show others how to build blurless roms for the DX.

That being said I am looking into getting a fascinate today. I am going to keep the DX for now and see what magic CVPCS can work. If Obsidian is made fully functional on the DX it would make things interesting again.

I haven't had a chance to look at the Fascinate yet, does it have a plastic body, like the Incredible, or is it metal like the X?

I just read through this entire thread and it was painful. I traded my DX for a Fascinate a couple of weeks ago because I saw this coming. I feel really bad for you guys, the DX was building a really strong community of devs, but now it seems, like a lot of users, the devs are jumping ship, going to phones like the Fascinate, for the simple fact that it will allow them to do what they do, develop.

The DX was one of, if not the best phone I've had, the size is close to perfect and I really liked the form factor. However, after using the Fascinate, I think 4" might be optimal for a phone and the screen really is amazing. What I think you guys should do is get rid of your DX's and we all flood Moto's forum's with complaints and how we are switching to the Fascinate, Incredible or whatever.

Lastly, I would like to say that none of you really should be trashing birdman for getting rid of his DX, he has done nothing but work his ass of for months trying to crack this thing, also being a big part of the reason that the DX took off with other devs. I do hope things do turn around from where there are at now and someone is able to get you to the promise land because after a wait like this, I'm sure it would be pretty sweet.

Plastic, but not cheap in any way. It doesn't feel quite as solid as the DX(obviously), but I think it feels better in hand.

Damn, I don't like plastic for phone bodies, it just feels cheap and not very durable to me.

as stated above by irishpride its not cheap plastic. Most reviews I have read says it feels well made but not to the level of the X.

Heres what engadget said

The phone is manufactured out of plastic, and feels like and somewhat hollow to the touch. It's not cheaply made, but it doesn't have the heft of some other devices in this class (such as the Droid 2). Even the Captivate has a metal back, which gives it a slightly higher-end feel.

So what was the final reason for them determining it couldn't be done?

It was all a little over my head but basically the whole thing with BP wouldnt work. I would have to reread the chatlog to refresh my memory as to exactly why. The kexec thing could work but most likely doing so disable the radio. At least thats what happened with the milestone. So if that was done you would have a pda instead of a phone. Kexec would also require you to boot the stock kernel first then boot the custom kernel or something to that effect which sounds pretty tedious.

Edit: Not sure any of that explanation is correct but its my understanding of it all.

Thanks OMJ Where can I get the chat log? From the discussions I saw they were having a hard time trying to figure out how to get it on the phone.

There must be a way to install a ROM moto does it OTA. I guess it's all top secret though.

The farthest the guys for the milestone got was bascially making it into pda with not phone/mobile internet with kexec, hopefully they can figure something out to fix that with the X if not well just have a 4.3 inch ipad like device....

It'll sell millions!!!

well moto has the signing keys so its easy for them. The chat logs I have on my computer cause my irc client logs everything. I have been in that channel for a few days. I can upload the log somewhere when I get a chance. Its a hell of a lot to sort through though.

It seems to me that a logical step is to try to get a Motorola employee (or former one) to spill the beans (code.), right? :) I'm a genius! :D

not likely that someone will do that. Not only would they get fired but probably sued too.

So it seems like Samsung is the only manufacturer not locking down their phones?

Maybe I'll take a closer look at the Fascinate. Or I'll wait and see how the whole G2 thing ends up, because I'm sure the same "anti-root" chip will be in the Merge.

I have an upgrade just chilling
