Root ROOTING For Dummies

Got my Evo on Monday, been playing with it and reading the forum for the past three days... got the battery life up - but decided to root. (Have a Sprint Hero I rooted awhile back). Not afraid of the process, but took my time to find the simplest, easiest way, with easy to read instructions..... and this is the thread for it!

I did get the "Triangle of Death", but hadn't read the very bottom yet. I pulled the battery, and waited for a minute or so before powering on. Went through the steps again, and this time it was successful. I also watched this video - http://www.youtube.com/user/djR3Z#p/a/u/0/iXWm8262iMU - and the visual aid was helpful.

I downloaded most of the apps ( I had already had Titanium Pro, and SetCPU), and have frozen a number of Bloat-apps. Am going to do more research before deciding which Rom to flash. I need to see what the easiest way to save my downloaded programs are first of all. Any suggestions?

Matlock, thanks once again! the process of rooting and flashing roms just continues to get easier.......

Download "app brain" from the market and it will sync all your apps online. Then once you flash a rom simply re download it from the market and it will re download all your apps!

EDIT: And make sure your contacts are backed up with your gmail.

I have had my Evo for quite a while now and recently have been reading about Rooting.
And I plan to do it soon. Should I backup my phone Before or After I Root it? I wanna keep my apps and settings.

you can back up apps through my backup before incase you have any issues, but you can only make a nandroid backup after you are rooted

When flashing a new Rom and Kernel, do I need to do one before the other? I planned to flash to Warm 2.2 with the Kings #9 kernel, and wanted to make sure.

Once I root do I have to get any special app to do a android back up or is it a feature the phone already has? Can I copy that back up file to my pc as well just incase? I'm planning on reseting to factory settings before I root is there a way or should I back up my stock evo prior to root..thanks

We need a few more details... did unrevoked sucessfully complete? And are you able to access recovery?

Ok just rooted this thing..piece of cake thanks to the instructions on this thread, now I'm getting rom manager and it's taking forever it's like stuck on authorizing purchase? Once I pay for this can I down load it anytime for free?

Ok fellas I got rom manager I partition my sd card and I'm backing up stock rom..once this is done where can I see my stuff on my sd card? Is there a way to have direct access to sd card? Sorry for the noob questions but hey I'm a noob..thanks

Download astro then you can view, edit and move files that are on your sd card. And i believe with clockwork all your nandroids will be in the clockwork folder on the root of the sd card.

Ok looks like all the garbage is frozen, not much is running. Now the tethering won't work though, I see it and I could connect to it via my iPad and my laptop..but just no Internet. Any one gone threw this?

Thank you to all you guys!
Now how do I improve my battery life??
do I need to flash a different ROM or can I do it on the Stock ??

Download this version of Wireless Tether. I did last night, and it worked with no problem.
wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre11.apk - android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users 2.0.5-pre11 *** EXPERIMENTAL *** - Project Hosting on Google Code

Thank you to all you guys!

Same ROMs will help battery life, you just have to find the ones that do. Before a ROM, read my ROOT-ONLY app section on SETSPU. It will let you know how to Underclock your device for greater battery life.

Are people having issues syncing AppBrain after using this root method? AppBrain isn't syncing for me, I uninstalled and reinstalled AppBrain and got it to sync once but since then it isn't working. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I followed the rooting instructions and everything worked. I can see the S-off in the boot menu.

I have the premium version of ROM manager Premium V 2.5.0.4 installed and have ensured that it has super user permissions. However, I get "an error occurred while flashing your recovery" when I try to flash clockwork recovery. I also hit the "Fix Permissions" link and got "An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands". I've tried several older versions of clockwork recovery, but no luck.

I'm running on 3g only. Is that a problem? I saw another thread here where the OP had success with "wifi turned on". Do I need to be on a wifi network? I've rebooted the phone several times after rebooting, but no luck. Been googling for the last half hour and nothing promising so far. Any suggestions?
