Help HTC desire crashes and restarts randomly

Hi all!

I'm kicking this topic.

I bought my phone about 6 months ago.. and about 2 months ago it was getting the same problems as you guys have.

Rebooting with no pattern in it or at least, that's what I thought. When I saw the movie on page 1, I tested my phone to see if I can trigger the reboot...

Well, it worked. Only not as in the movie, with a video. Mine reboots after he is been in use for about 20 minutes. And then when I open apps that are "big" like google maps, or phone camera, or latitude or even twitter... It crashes.

When the phone crashes, there is no end to it. For the first time yesterday I experienced even that the phone was hanging. I needed to pull out te battery in order to use the phone again.

When the reboots didn't end... I'd (just as in the movie) get some ice... and put the phone on the ice pack.. Not an solution. The phone is getting warm (not hot, just warm. Not normal warm, warm.) just at the bottom of the phone. I called HTC Netherlands, and they are sending a courier to get my phone, today. And they will take a look at it.

I made some movies about the reboot and stuff. I see if I can upload them somewhere. Anyways, the phone is gone for about 2 weeks. I hope that when it gets back, they fixed the problem... but I'm starting to think that would not be the issue.

Hi Everyone,

Just to let you know I got my phone back yesterday (I sent it off for repair on 9 September, so it took just under a month) and so far so good, everything is working fine. Tried the sat nav on the train into work, using google maps, navigation as well as CoPilout Live and it didn't reset, battery temp. peaked at around 36 degrees but the device didn't feel too hot. I'm going to give it a good test over the next few days so I'll let you know what happens.

Good luck to everyone sending of there phones for repairs, I hope you get it back soon and it's working fine.

I sent a message to HTC asking for a head office address and detailing my complaint. They replied... asking me to send my complaint again via the online system. Which is pointless as they were already responding to it!

*facepalm*

No address, though. Guess I'll use the one listed on the web page.

OMFG HTC SUCKS!!!

Aaaaaand calm!

Take a lie down, a nice cup of tea, realise that worse things happen in the world... then write your complaint in a nice long letter to the managing director. That's on my "to do" list at the weekend even though I've still not got mine back yet to see if it's still borked!

Chill :)

Iain

haha, yeah i've calmed down enough after a 40 min nap. writting a letter won't helps since i think HTC almost washed their hands of this problem. all they will say is what their programmed to say. "Send it to repair and we'll do the best we can"

We just can't expect more than that from them. I just wish their repair centers get better over time. Moreover my repair wasn

And what about the shop, Isn't the shop prepared to do something for you? Maybe give you a new phone?

I'll hope that my shop, would make an exception for me... If htc ****s it up. I'll think it's just plain stupid to send back a phone, without repair of replacing something. The least they could do was flash the software.

Which idiot would send there phone to repair if it wasn't broken. Thats just plain stupid.

Well, I'm curious what they will do with my phone....

at the moment i understand HTC's phone situation well enough that i know just getting a new phone won't do the trick (unless maybe if it's a phone with s/n08 and above). Plus them phone shops don't normally replace stuff after 1 month because their just cheap like that. Either way i'll keep sending it till i get a good enough motherboard installed because this phone needs to work for atleast 2 years before i turn it to dust (and that's 2 years with me not 2 years with repair >.<)

Just got mine back, but no idea what they've done to it as there's no information in the package anywhere. Just got the phone, battery, tech printout (detailing the problem, but not the solution) and a feedback form.

First thing I did notice is that they've stripped off my screen protector and tried to put it back on. There's dust and stuff underneath it so I'm hoping that's not scratched the screen as it was perfect when I sent it off.

Will keep people updated if I have further problems. In the meantime, I'm still writing to the MD to complain about the length of time the "repair" has taken.

Second thing I noticed was that my phone has a new IMEI number, so I can't restore any of the saved data I backed up. This despite being told by the technician on the phone that I would definitely be able to.

At least it's not crashed. Yet. But it's a PITA sorting it back out to be set up like it was before I shipped it off.

An update on my situation. I sent the phone off on October 1st, and got an email today saying that it's being sent back now. Given that virtually everyone else on here have had to wait a good month to get theirs repaired I'm slightly suspicious as to what they've done, but I guess tomorrow I'll find out.

You lucky sod, Mark! Hope it works when it appears. No issues with mine, yet, aside from remembering how poor the mobile and GPS reception are compared to my Nokia E71.

Well it arrived today in one piece, and seems to be working fine so far. I was particularly amused by the little "I'm back!" message on the front of the box. Just trying to remember all the apps I had installed now...

Just trying to remember all the apps I had installed now...

Experience reinstalling PCs meant I'd made a list of mine before I shipped it off to them! Took me a while getting them on and I still can't get the screen layout how I had it, but never mind.

Of course, all my SMSs and so on are lost as they changed something in the phone so it has a new IMEI number and won't restore the backup off the SD card. Not happy.

Thats's a good idea. I wouldn't of been able to note them down though - the phone was bricked by the time I'd sent it off.

My IMEI number is also changed. Did you get any information on what they've actually done to repair the phone? I've just got a note stating my details, and the problem reported. But I don't really need to know what the problem was since I was the one who sent it off for repair!

Exactly the same as you, Mark. A bad description of the fault, the previous and new details and... erm... that's it, really. No idea what they've done that's taken over a month to fix.

I've been hammering the thing, though, and it's stayed steady so far. Fingers crossed. And I gather that Three are rolling out 2.2 shortly as well. We'll see what effect that has.

I've been on 2.2 since the start of August. My problems started happening after that, so it shouldn't cause much of a change.

I have read this thread with interest I am also having this problem and I have noticed the getting hot syndrome I have my desire in a rubber case that I will try and leave off see if it makes any difference ?? and advise you.

Hi guys

I too have had constant rebooting problems with my htc desire.
It was definitely caused by using google navigator for too long making the unit crash constantly due to becoming too hot thereby damaging the motherboard and once the problem started it just got worse.
T-Mobile were worse than useless and kept on insisting on sending it off for repair. After waiting over a month for my desire back I threatened them with court action and explained to them that under the consumer act I had the right to receive a new unit and not a repaired one (as the unit was less than 6 months old).
After fighting tooth and nail, I now have a replacement desire with s/n09 but don't fully trust it. I will keep you informed about how stable it is over the coming months.

Ive gotta admit, although HTC's customer service wasnt primo, once i had my desire back from warranty repair, it has worked a treat with none of the rebooting loops i was experiencing previousley...

To be fair, the customer service wasnt really that bad. The online tracker was next to useless, but updates via the phone were easy enough to get.

Got mine back much quicker than expected - they had it for about 2 weeks. The phone has a new IMEI as expected.

Works perfectly so far, even dared to use navigation at the weekend.

The battery seems to be lasting a fair bit longer as well.

Anyways, this fiasco must be costing HTC a fair bit of

Complaint letter written and will be in the post tomorrow. Let's see what sort of result I get from it.

Battery on mine is lasting as long (or not!) as it ever did. This is my only complaint with the phone itself. I've seen 3000mAh batteries available, but they make the phone quite large. Still tempted...

An update on my case...

I got the phone from repairs three weeks ago and the damn rebooting is happening again. Phone is still overheating and restarting!!!

I can't make a call last for cca 10-15 mins, browsing for about the same time cause it to crash, reboot and stuck on first htc white screen.....multitasking!!! MISSION IMPOSSIBLE!!!
After 20 mins without battery left to cool down, it starts without any problems and it works until next "hard" usage.

Guys from repair store told me that they replaced GSM antenna and...hear this: Installed the NEWEST software (2.2 btw which was already on the phone!!!) which should solve the problem!!!...I mean, COME ON!

So I've been reading all over the net about this problem and I'm wondering is this sw related or not?

If somebody with custom ROM can confirm having the same problems!
If not, I'm going to root the phone and install the custom ROM, even if this going to mess my warranty! Cause I don't have any more nerves to deal with this problem, repair store and their stupid and inconclusive stories!!!

Period!

I just updated to Froyo 2.2 today as Three have finally made it available to me. I had to manually check for an update, but I got it and put it on.

Phone's behaved well pre- and post-upgrade. Had it in the car with the charger on and using Navigation so it's been pretty toasty today without a hitch.

Fingers crossed.

Hi.
I had had rebooting problems and they replaced the motherboard. Most likely this issue is not SW related. I recommend you to send them your phone again and also point them to this thread. Good luck.

Hi

It sounds like your local repairer or distributor just hasn't fixed the problem at all. Perhaps you should show them this thread and tell them to call HTC?

On another note I got a customer satisfaction call from HTC yesterday. Told them how it was. And get this - they were shocked to learn that their repair tracking site does not work!

"Finally, do you have any other comments Sir?"
"Erm... yes, your repair tracking website doesn't work"
"Really, oh wow, are you sure?"
"Yes - Its never worked, has nobody honestly told you this?"
"No its the first I've heard..."
"Dude, there are several 20 page plus topics on the internet about this crashing problem, every single one of the mentions how your repair tracking site doesn't work"

I LOLed after.
