Help HTC desire crashes and restarts randomly

Hi guys and gals has anyone tried underclocking their HTC Desire to try and avoid this problem? (if it is indeed a heat-sync / cpu problem).

Thanks

JnB

wouldn't that defeat the purpose of buying a high end smartphone?
Or do you mean for testing purposes?

Hi, I was considering getting this phone sim-free from Amazon.co.uk however I slightly concerned after reading this thread. Is the issue now fixed, would a new model of the phone have the issue, or was it just a fault with the earlier models?

Thanks.

And another one.

Showing all the classic symptoms.
Phone is about 3 months old.
Started to reboot when using Google navigation for over 2 hours, now I'm lucky if I get 10 minutes.
Factory reset didn't help.
Interestingly, the phone does not seem to get hot anywhere, just warm.

I might wait a bit before getting it repaired, it still seems too hit-and-miss as to if HTC will change the MB for a working one.
Radio: 33.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2
Software number: 2.10.405.2
Not rooted.
Stock HTC ROM.

Really annoying.

Interestingly, the phone does not seem to get hot anywhere, just warm.

Mine varied from warm-ish (could have been hand temperature) to definitely hot. Rebooted all the same.

Since I got it back I've been running the thing like mad and the temperature is at least the peak of what the original reached. Touch wood, no issues yet.

As of today, mine is much worse.
If I just put it on charge, even when idle, it reboots after about 10 minutes and then gets into a reboot loop.
Looks like I have no choice by to try to get it repaired.

Well, its been a while since I posted, but I have some updates.

First, I believed to have troubleshooted it to the battery, so I called them up to try and get a replacement. Their phone support may be good for their handsets, but when it comes to accessories it is complete shit! First time I call I get transferred to their accessory department and I get disconnected. Second time I keep my connection, but am on hold for 25 MINUTES before giving up. I try again and ask to speak to a manager, but the rep said there wasn't anything he'd be able to do so he transfers me again... this time I get to speak to somebody though. However being in Canada (something I told all the previous reps), he gives me a number for their Canadian accessory supplier, which is closed.

Fortunately, I believed to have found a fix: By turning off the GPS receiver my phone no longer reboots! The only time it seems to reboot is if I make a call right after taking it off the charger, but it will work fine afterwards (unlike before where it was non-stop and random).

My phone was collected by UPC last Wednesday, and it was returned today. The motherboard has been changed. I had the phone on idle and within 3 hours, it rebooted :( So, sending it in for repair was a complete waste of time.

I do have my phone in a case-mate cover. Do you think this would cause it to overheat and reboot? Do other people who have this reboot problem also use a case?

Same thing happened with me, got it replaced but still having this reboot problem. Gonna try and ask them for a new set. No point changing motherboard over and over again.

It could be that they are replacing the MB with a "refurbished" one from a device that was having the same problem.
Some people seem to be reporting that a new MB does fix the issue for them.
I wish someone knew what the root cause is.

Just had a follow-up call from them regarding the feedback questionnaire I filled in a couple of weeks back. Told them that I wasn't satisfied with a 6-week turnaround for a manufacturing fault and that I'd sent a letter to the Director 3 weeks ago with no response.

I was told the "escalation team" would look into it.

Hum. Yeah.

Phoned up by their escalation team just now. Their "final decision" is that I can receive no recompense as I could have arranged to have my calls forwarded to another number or got Three to give me a loaner for the period I was without my phone.

No mention of the fact that I was told 12 working days and it took 23 (i.e. 6 weeks) and they just said "Um, well" when I told them that Three had refused me a phone as the problem was a manufacturing fault.

Also, they refused to supply me with contact details to escalate my escalations, allow me to speak to anyone else in the office and wouldn't promise that I would be contacted again by anyone else regards my complaint - as it was a final decision.

However, my issues would be taken on board to improve customer services in future. So that's alright then.

Oh, it so does *not* end here.

Sorry, having to disable features you paid for is not a fix. Workaround at best. I am officially in regret mode with this phone.

Second handset... both with random shutdowns, rebooting, flashing HTC logo etc. At least the first one was like that out of the box and was easily replaced.

No doubt this is a heat issue and like many others noted, my troubles seemed to start after running the NAV for an extended period with the car charger attached.

I am trying to run a business with this phone and having it cut out while on the phone with customers is unacceptable. So now what?? Call HTC and then ship it off for God knows how long, with no assurance that they will even fix it.

I just hope they eventually wise up and make public that there is a defect inherent with this phone and provide a practical solution.

Man, I miss my Blackberry /rant

Hmm..i was gonna ask if those people suffering from reboot loop are rooted or not. My motherboard was replaced recently, and after a month the reboot loop happened again. After having it repaired for the 2nd time, decided to sell it and got myself another SLCD desire. Was just wondering whether rooting could prevent this from happening.

Just got mine back today, within two weeks, so not too bad.
Managed to charge it whilst watching a flash video, previously this would have caused a reboot loop.
I'll try out Google navigation as soon as I get a chance.
It will also be interesting to see what happens in two to three months time.

Looks like the MB is changed (new IMEI), but serial number is the same. Same screen, which is good as it is AMOLED.
The radio firmware seems to be a later version: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27

As long as the problem is really fixed and does not come back, I'm happy.
Nice to have my Desire back, I missed it.

Holy run around!!! :mad::mad:

I called the HTC hotline last night who advised me to call the warranty department... but it had just closed. So this morning I call the HTC warranty office in the US. They tell me they don't do warranty on the Desire, so they refer me to some third party company. So I call them and when I say I am in Toronto they say.. oops.. call our Canadian office, we can't help you. Which I do... and guess what?? They don't do warranty work for HTC and referred me back to them!

After calling back the HTC service department and explaining all this, I am told after 20 minutes they are not sure they can get the parts and will contact me in 2-3 weeks to let me know. Only then will they provide a RMA!! WTF???

This is friggin ridiculous for a phone that is 3 months old. Never will I go near another HTC product.

Any fellow Canucks have better luck?? Suggestions?

Just sat here online, and saw something out of the corner of my eye:

My phone rebooting.

It wasn't doing or running anything and it's stone cold. Argh.

My Desire is about 4 months old, and about a month ago it started this rebooting caper. Gradually gotten worse until the past few days phone has become very unstable.

Personally I think it's an over heating issue. Last night it went into a spasm of rebooting. I left it to see how many times it would do it and after about 20 I decided to try something. I took the back cover off and held the battery against a cold piece of metal to act like a heat sink, and lo it started up.

Today I called my phone supplier a online company Mobilephonesdirect and they said they never heard of the problem, would take nothing to do with it and referred me to HTC.

I called HTC and the guy said he had heard about the issue but it wasn't a big issue and only a few phones are affected. When I said there were a lot of people online complaining about it he said they are all liars and it wasn't true.

Anyway he has arranged for their courier to pick the phone up and take for repair. 10 working days turnaround supposedly.

I am going to contact BBC Watchdog about it as its a disgrace I have to do without a phone and still have to pay for my service.

Has anyone else in UK contacted the BBC or do they want to, we could get together.

I'd go for that. My "12 working day" turnaround ended up being 6 weeks. I contacted the company to ask for compensation as I was without a device or service I was paying for and was told "no" by some pleb on a desk who wouldn't refer me to anyone more senior.

And if the guy you spoke to would like to face me and call me a liar I'll have his job.

Hi guys

I too have had constant rebooting problems with my htc desire.
It was definitely caused by using google navigator for too long making the unit crash constantly due to becoming too hot thereby damaging the motherboard and once the problem started it just got worse.
T-Mobile were worse than useless and kept on insisting on sending it off for repair. After waiting over a month for my desire back I threatened them with court action and explained to them that under the consumer act I had the right to receive a new unit and not a repaired one (as the unit was less than 6 months old).
After fighting tooth and nail, I now have a replacement desire with s/n09 but don't fully trust it. I will keep you informed about how stable it is over the coming months.

Well, I've had my new replacement HTC Desire for 5 weeks now and guess what?.... it's starting to play up. It reached 41 degrees last sunday and burnt my leg when i'd just left it on standby and now the battery won't last for longer than 5 hours, even when it's just being left on standby. What a useless piece of kit. HTC shouldn't have released it. Personally, I'm going to demand a full refund.

Well, I have 3 HTC desires in the firm, one of which goes reboot loopy, generally after a games session. HOWEVER there is a much bigger issue here, namely that yet another big company is getting away with murder by supplying products that clearly have endemic manufacturing faults and pretending - in the face of all the evidence - that there is nothing untoward going on. (The normal battery life of the thing is a joke anyway - 6 hours if the user does anything more than "not use"the phone.)

Sanyo supplied an Xacti camera with an endemic fault where the auto iris failed due to wrong grease - the forums made it obvious the problem was real, Sanyo pretends it does not exist because they have no intention to replace the faulty cameras. Dixons/pc World supplied a lot of advent PCs with faulty motherboard ROMs; again, they refuse to discuss and hope users get bored and go away.

The occasional TV expose will not fix this state of affairs, people have short memories (which all big companies rely on). There needs to be somewhere to coordinate the disgruntled users actions so that they can bite these companies in the arse, cost them money and do real PR damage - and not let go until proper satisfaction is achieved.
