Help MMS pictures not downloading

I'm trying to look at these nude pics this girl is sending me, but they won't download on my Eris that I got last week!!! It doesn't matter if I have the mobile network enabled or not. Looks like I'm going to verizon to get a new phone already...

wow...

My wife's Eris is randomly able to download pics from text messages. Some do, some don't... In fact, only on April 2nd and 3rd, has she had trouble and then, she got some pics.

I have an Eris also and have had no trouble...

Jhewitt22,

Hows the new phone? When i have done the hard reset it works for about 5 weeks then stops again. Are you at that point yet? Im quite tired of devoting my time to this Eris issue but i cant help it as it frustrates me so! I have called HTC...they say a new update will fix ALL the bugs but no real release date for that. Best they can say is in May. Verizon just says they will look into it and get back to me. The do offer me a new phone but id rather the update just fix it so i dont have to redo my whole phone. Let me know how yours is doing.

I have the Moto Droid (no problems here) but my wife's HTC Droid Eris exhibits the problem.

She can only get pix messages about 2/3 of the time. When a pix message fails to come through, she gets a download button. Pressing the button results in an error message after only about 2 seconds. The download button NEVER works. If she sees the download button she might as well just tell them to email her the pic.

I hooked her phone up to my Android development computer and downloaded some trace logs.

The results are pretty interesting. It confirms that some of us really aren't nuts and it is a problem on Verizon's side:

I posted my findings here:

i'm having this issue on the incredible. weird thing is it seems most of the time the pictures come through, yet i still get a notification saying "message not downloaded"

Chances are there are useful messages being saved to the trace log in your phone.

To extract the log
* Download the SDK
* Connect your phone to computer via USB
* Run tools/adb logcat -v time

That will spit out the last few minutes of logs, and will start watching the log in real-time.

As you're watching the log, try to reproduce the problem.

i get alot of MMS that r supposed to have movement animated jokes, but they only ever come thru as picks. i tried handcent, but it screwed my normal txt messaging up by not recieving txts. is there a way to fix this? i'm running the 1.5 firmware on htc hero

this is unfortunately how smartphones handle these animated messages with music. For some reason it splits the audio and images

atleast this is my experience. I'm sure someone much smarter than I has it figured out by now

I will post the results of the sdk debug when i get home tonight, but i have found some interesting info...

When I uninstall chomp and use the stock messaging app, the error stops. As soon as i reinstall chomp, it comes back...

ok, i seem to have fixed this on the incredible - but i'm not really sure how so i'll just post the settings i have for the stock app (i haven't gotten any errors since i went to these settings)...

MMS settings
-------------
delivery reports - off
auto-retrieve - off
priority setting - high
max message size - 1.2m
attachment storage - phone storage

received messages
------------------
received notification - off

sent messages
--------------
sent notification - off
failure notification - off

i have no idea if this is just coincidence or what exactly happened, but when i changed to those settings i now have gotten rid of the "message not downloaded" errors (for now) when receiving mms...

I had MMS troubles in 1.5, but with the OTA 2.1 no more problems so far!

Okay I'm glad to see this isn't just me.

I'm on a HTC Desire, and I've been receiving picture messages just fine.

However....

Last weekend I rooted my phone, and installed a custom 2.2 ROM, and now I can receive them at all. Tried all the suggestions here, short of a factory reset, and still no joy.

At first I thought it was a fault with the update, but it seems that it was a common fault BEFORE I did my patch.

Rooting the phone is a big factor that may have contributed to the issue but in any case you can review your device log around the time when the problem happens and you'll probably see some helpful messages.

The most simplest way to obtain the device log is to get the app called "Log Collector". It's open source and free. It will allow you to email your log buffer to yourself or anybody you want.

Had a look through the log file, and I cant make head nor tail of it LOL.

I didn't need this app and was able to download/view/save pic messages the past few days using Handcent and the Stock Messaging...

That app doesn't help with this problem anyway. I've tried everything anyone has suggested (don't bother with calling Verizon, it's useless, forums are WAY more helpful). Nothing has worked so far. I've had the problem for months.

setting the max file size allowed for downloaded files from 2mb to 500k fixed this error for me. FWIW, the pic sent to me was 675kb and downloaded just fine

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I fixed it by setting my data APN's type to "default". I have two APNs, one for data and one for sms (long story, but it's because my data plan does not include sms/mms). My sms APN has been set to "sms" but my data APN's type was blank. As soon as I typed in "default" in the type field, all of my mms messages downloaded.

It helps me solve the problem. After I set my two APNs to "mms" and "default", I can download mms messages.

I always had this problem and turning on mobile network fixed it all for me.

This worked for me as well! Actually, it was already on...but I went in and unchecked the box, then rechecked it and I was abled to send and receive after that. Thank you!
