Help Evo Rebooting on its own

I got my Evo August 1 from Sprint.

running android ver 2.2

software ver 3.29.651.5

Yesterday approaching the Holland Tunnel (5 bars) I had the GPS on and the phone rebooted 4 times in 10 minutes.

Been rebooting with GPS on and GPS off, random times and in good coverage and bad.

Going to the Sprint store tomorrow.

Like I said CALL HTC @ 866-449-8358 Thats the only way to get them to fix this problem

Just called the number and was told to take my phone to Sprint. Interestingly I asked the tech support person if he had heard of this issue of the EVO randomly rebooting. He said no. !!! I asked him again in a different way and again he denied that it was a known problem. Unbelievable. Cover up?

I took my EVO to Sprint today and they checked it. The technician said that the reason my phone was rebooting was because of the battery-- it was defective. I have never heard of this before. The battery was a SEIDO after market 1750 mAh unit that I bought on Amazon.

The technician replaced it with an htc battery at no charge... so far, so good.

i dunno...my phone rebooted with two different batteries.

Update: I went to the Sprint store and of course they did a hard reset saying it might be one of my applications. The only application I have installed in the last four weeks are Swype and Tweetdeck. Anyone with Sywpe or TweetDeck having a rebooting issue?

I will keep the phone for a few days without any non-stock applications to see how it works and then I will slowly load my applications one at a time to see if any of them will trigger the reboot.

The trouble is that a lot of people have reported that the rebooting problem didn't start for some time after they bought the phone. So you never know how long to wait before loading apps one at a time--maybe the phone would have rebooted after a couple weeks and by now you've loaded a bunch of apps on it.

It's really tough to troubleshoot these intermittent and random problems.

Well, the phone rebooted this morning after about 10 mins of use with only stock applications. Off to the sprint store again this evening after work. I have had the phone since day one and it has worked fine until the last 4 weeks or so.

Has anyone had this reboot issue before the latest update to 3.29.651.5 or did it start after that update? When I got my new phone I didn't check for updates. I got a notification today that there is an update available. I assumed it would have already had all of the updates. Appearently this phone was not updated to 3.29.651.5 before it was shipped to me. Now I am afraid to update. If I do there is no going back. I have a strong feeling that something in that update is causing the problem. I had no issues until after that update was applied to my old phone.

My replacement phone has been working flawlessly. I just did a test today and had GPS and Pandora on in my car on my way home from work and the phone got warm and never rebooted. Pandora sounds like crap though. Was that something that was fixed with the last update?

My replacement phone is hardware version0003 and it is running 3.26.651.6.

it was happening to both evo's ive had so far. first phone was hardware version 002...the new one is 003 and still having the rebooting issue. Just got the new phone last week.

happened when rooted and not rooted. happened on a stock rom not rooted and also rooted with both fresh and damage roms.

ive had the issue with minimal apps installed. tried hard resets, different roms, clearing cache and dalvik.

so at this point i honestly have no clue. i did start getting errors about the SD card saying that there may be errors and to scan it when plugging it into my pc, however the SD card would still work when ignored. i did have another SD card that came with the new phone, so i ended up swapping them and formatted the new one and transferred files over. Did this early this morning.

since then i haven't had it reboot...however there have been times where it doesn't'reboot for a few days.

I'll report back towards the end of the week if it doesn't reboot itself....but obviously will report sooner if it reboots again.

ok so its been 3 days...but the phone JUST rebooted now. it was next to me...i picked it up...pressed power to wake it up, and clicked on titanium backup....and it rebooted itself.

so back to square one :(

this is actually a VERY good question. i honestly dont remember....but i know this wasnt always an issue. when i got the phone...it was working great for months...even after rooting. this issue started only in the past 1-2 months for sure....and it seems it happened after the update now that i think about it.

im in the process of flashing fresh's new rom with the new OTA. Guess we will see how this pans out.

FWIW I have a launch Evo. Had problems after the first 2 weeks with constant rebooting when accessing GPS programs. After reboots the programs would load up fine. Did hard resets a few times and it would work for a few hours/days then go back to rebooting everytime I accessed GPS and ONLY GPS. Did the MSL fix and the phone has never rebooted on its own again. That was >2 months ago.

Did you have insurance? If not, did you have to pay anything to get a replacement phone?

after updating to the newest OTA, the phone rebooted once yesterday. immediately after i decided to try the MSL fix.

ill update if within the next few days whether it reboots or not

I'm having the reboot problem as well-it would be interesting to start a poll so we can figure out the percentage of people on the site who are having this problem.

It seems like it's not just one thing causing it. Lots of people swear its the GPS-I almost never have the GPS on and it still does it. It's only been happening for a few weeks to me, but I have noticed a correlation between low signal and heavy web usage. My phone also seems to be running MUCH slower since this has begun as well.

My EVO reboots randomly during the week, but really lets go on Fridays.

Swear to God - every Friday for the last 5 weeks - it goes into reboot hell - recycling through the boot screens and then off again at least a dozen times. It could be in my pocket, on my desk, mounted in my car, or being held in my hand - it just shuts down and resets as many times as it feels the need to.

The most it has cycled on and off before it stopped on its own was 25 reboots, which was last Friday. That's when I called HTC who made me do a hard reset, to no avail. The phone started its rebooting cycle 5 minutes after the hard reset. Then I called the HTC repair center and they had no information on this problem, but offered me the opportunity to send the phone to them for 2 1/2 weeks so they could look at repairing it. Yeah right!?!

Today, it decided to go into fits a day early, shutting down while on a call and rebooting 10 times before it finally calmed down and decided to stay on. I then called Sprint and told my story to no less than 5 people - the final one a rep from Account Services. She said she couldn't do much for me, so she set me up with an appointment at a Sprint repair center for tomorrow afternoon.

I really don't hold much hope for a fix even from the Sprint techs. I don't want a replacement phone - I just want my EVO to be stable and operate dependably. I short, I want to keep the phone I spent hours customizing, fixed. Is that too much to ask from either HTC or Sprint, especially with the number of EVO owners who share this same dilemma?

You should see people's reaction when this happens - they really get a great impression of both HTC and Sprint - unbelievable!

well even after the MSL fix...still having the problem. i was doing something on the phone...then turned the screen off, placed the phone on a table and it rebooted.

so im back to square one for real this time lol.

I do have insurance but this was a warranty replacement. I did not pay anything. I see no reason why people would be paying anything to get their defective phone replaced. No one has owned one for more than a year.

I still haven't experienced a reboot with the replacement device. I also have not updated to 3.29.651.5 and I don't think I will. This phone is working better than ever.

I just got my EVO yesterday. As of about 6am when i turned it back on (had it off and charging overnight) it keeps re-starting. it turns on long enough to enter my password and then immediately re-starts. Taking it back to store today. Incase this happens with my next one does anyone have a fix that definately works?

You were not asked to pay anything because you had insurance. Even for warranty replacement, they expect you to pay $35 for them to replace it or they ask that you deal with HTC. This their way of asking everyone to buy insurance. I have been dealing with them for the last week and the $35 will not be waived. It is not the money, just the principle of paying for something that is supposed to be on warranty.

I have been with Sprint for the last 9 years, so I have no idea if that is how the other carriers are treating their customers like this now.

If it was covered under insurance there would be a $100.00 fee, there should be no charge for warranty, I have never had to pay one.

I am seriously about to throw this piece of crap in the trash! It's maddening that its almost impossible to use this phone now and I'm constantly afraid it will reboot while on an important call for work or when I have to use the GPS or something.

about the only thing we can do i guess is bring it to sprint, im about to do so myself. I just hope when i take it there i can get it to reboot for them rather than having to sit there for 15 minutes on the browser to get it to reboot.

I sent mine to Sprint and nothing happened. They did a hard reset even though I told them numerous times that I did that twice already. Well, I figured that maybe there is a different way to do it. The next day, it started rebooting again. They offered to replace it under warranty but there is a $35 charge, a new policy in the last 3 weeks, I understand.

I have been arguing with them for the last few weeks purely based on principle. However, I need the phone to work, so I am going to pay the $35 to get a working phone. However, I doubt I will be with Sprint when my contract ends. I have only 4 phones, so I don't think they will miss me much.

Sorry, but there is a new policy to charge for warranty repairs for users without TEP. They say it is a courtesy fee since warranty repairs are the responsibility of the manufacturer.

Well got the EVO back from HTC they said they couldnt find a problem made one test call and wiped it clean and sent it back again. I activated it and bam 2 hours later it rebooted on a phone call I am more than pissed off. The HTC repair center is near Houston I think I'll be paying them a visit soon with two broke evo's
