Root [ROM] ApeX V1.0 for Droid X - An AOSP Experience (10/20/10)

I installed some black top mod last that wasn't Fab's...(tried looking for the thread last night and could not find it) night and my phone has not only slowed down, but freezes, and also FC's LPP sometimes...

How do I uninstall just the black top bar?

Flash your backup?

I got the exact opposite results. I couldn't get past 1.1GHz using stock or higher voltage. I found I'm stable using the Ultra Low Voltage 1.2GHz. 1600+ in quadrant, great battery life. 1.2GHz on medium or high voltage resulted in a turtle every time.

I'm having success at lower voltages as well. After running at 1.25Ghz at "medium" all day yesterday, I am testing 1.25Ghz at "low voltage" today, and it's been stable.

While it's cool to tinker in terminal using Fab's scripts, I'm having more success using the settings in JRummy's app. My problem with custom settings was rebooting not turtling, so I assume voltages were too low. Who knows. :)

Quick (and probably stupid question) about this ROM and the Tranq launcher. Why is it so slow moving between screens and opening the app drawer? I even set the settings for animations and such to fast in spare parts and its still slow. Is something wrong?

I use LPP which is super fast, but I'm curious about this now.

Thanks all.

Bumping myself here again.

Thoughts anyone?

What is Tranq launcher? Tranquilty is another ROM, I'm thinking you've got some conflicts.

Or

I'm thinking your phone isn't handling the ApeX overclock very well. Try going to terminal emulator and typing in...
su <return>
overclock -off <return>
reboot <return>

Mine didn't handle the ApeX OCing, I had to shut it down and install Jrummy's to get mine to take, I'm flying now.:D

After I installed this ROM, it came up stating a default launcher of Tranq Q Launcher and Moto Setup. (I assume this happens for everyone no?) I pretty much ignored it since I use LPP (which runs fine, nice and fast). But if I try to use this stock launcher, I just noticed it runs really slow. (The app drawer esp). Turning on fast animations in Spare Parts app does not help.

If necessary I can install shootme and do up some screenshots later. Do you not see this on your phone?

As for the OC, if I run those commands, will it permanently turn off OC? If so, I may give this a shot.

Thanks for the reply!

I can get to 1.2 at any voltage so far, if I go to 1.25 it starts crapping the bed.

I can't run 1.2 at any voltage without random restarts. I tried 1.15 at med, low, and UL but that didn't work either.

Trooper - The overclock -off will turn off OC at boot by default for the ever awesome ApeX rom. :D You can also remove the tranq launcher with launcher -rm from a term window. It is all in the first few posts. Just make sure you don't uninstall LPP without putting the tranq launcher back on.

Ah, just looked at Home Switcher, I understand now. I also use LPP so I didn't even remember the Tranq Q option. So, ignore my conflict statement. But if you are using LPP, I'd make sure you have the Tranq screen cleared off, remove all widgets and Icons from Tranq Q.

Yes, this will disable OC until you turn it back on or flash a backup when it was on. To turn it back on, it's the same steps you just have to change the -off to a -on. I'd give it a shot, you can always put it back.

Ok just turned the OC off in the term window and rebooted. For the heck of it, I enabled the tranq launcher and the app drawer is still really slow. (Its like setting LPP to a really slow launch speed). Is it supposed to behave this way?

Whats up with this Setup Launcher as well? Is it safe to remove that as well?

Only reason Im asking is because I was thinking to run the tranq launcher to get that old school feel, but its too slow for me to bother.

Also, since turning off the OC did not increase the speed, can I turn it back on by typing overclock -on? Or should I try one of these OC apps?

Thanks again!

The setup launcher I don't think should cause any real issue. That is just the setup page but I get that as well. I just set lpp to default and went from there.

I ran tranQ launcher for all of about 10 min as I had to do a reinstall of LPP to get my gmail notifications to work again properly but I dont' recall the drawer acting that way. Did you go into spare parts and see what the animations are set to?

Turning off oc won't increase the speed probably but it should make it more stable if you were having rebooting issues.

Thanks for the information. I think I may just turn OC back on.

The animations were not set to anything by default. I increased both of them to fast and it did not change the behavior of the app drawer.

Ive not had any reboot problems thank God, so I may just as well just throw the OC back on for now. Thanks for your help!

I lost root in the process. Yes, I followed the directions exactly including wipe. someone touched on this earlier, but wasn't discussed much. Is there any risk to rooting while on this rom? Just want to make sure i don't have to go back to stock rom first. It will take, right?

I don't think I've had any reports of the overclock not taking at all, but a very small minority that are very unstable (reboots like every 10 minutes). That being said, 10 minutes is plenty time to disable the feature in terminal emulator :)
I've turned off OC through terminal emulator with "$ overclocking -off" and am still getting random freeze/reboots.

I only have the ApeX ROM installed with no themes and all my applications. Is it possible I do have one of those dud DXs that people are talking about?

I really enjoy the functionality and speed of this ROM and I don't want to have to go back to stock.

halp!

Did you type su <enter> before the overclock -off ??

If you had the $ instead of # I presume you didn't. I'm not 100% sure but I think this requires super user access to be able to turn it on and off. Also it is overclock -off not overclocking -off

@Fabolous

I've noticed that if I am on the market and I receive a text through chompsms (haven't tried with other text apps) the screen will go black. Sometimes another text will kick it out of the black screen, but at other times I have to restart the phone by pulling the battery or by pushing the power button and guessing where the power off on the screen is at.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

EDIT: Just now I pushed the power button and it kicked the phone out of the black screen and it seems to be working fine now.

And I'll add to Hellfish, Yes, you do need su <return> and be at the # for it to take. Also, when you enter the code correctly in terminal emulator, you will get a confirmation "overclock off at boot" and when you get that, you actually have to reboot the phone for it to be off. Until you reboot, you are still overclocking.

And if I may quote myself from this morning, you do it like this...

Try going to terminal emulator and typing in...
su <return>
overclock -off <return>
reboot <return>

Thanks a ton! I knew the # was supposed to be there for root access but didn't know if it was needed for this application. Did exactly as you said and voila.

You rock buddy!

Now hopefully no more random freezes...

Yes, I don't know what's causing this though. I use ChompSMS and it happens once every few days.

Could it be because of the pop up? Are you using that by any chance?

I think it's an app issue, not really the ROM, but I'm not going to run another ROM for 3 days to see if this one issue happens :p (especially since holding down the power button fixes it)

Yeah, I am using the pop up. I was going to mention that, but I guess it slipped my mind. I think you are right, most likely pop up/app related.
