First Droid Eris update makes the slow OTA rollout starting tonight

My phone arrived friday at noon, loving it so far! Battery has been great IMO. Nothing like my old Chocolate, of course, but I knew what to expect.

No updated yet. WA state

UPDATE OBSERVATIONS

- Lag definitely improved. Not as obvious as before this update. Much better memory management I belive. I was using app killer all the time before the update. Now I haven't had a reason to yet.
- Dialing Manually much faster. Before there was a slight lag when dialing numbers quickly. Now it is instant.
- Battery seems better.
- App switching quicker... (again less lag)

More to come...

As stated before, I did the update during the early morning hours today. My 1x and 3g still bounce around. Also, for the first time since owning my Eris, my phone completely froze on the lock page and I had to pull the battery. I hope this "upgrade" doesn't cause more problems than good.

We've discussed this before. Enjoy your "dumb phone" with good battery life. You should not need to shut down essential features of the phone to get reasonable battery life.

[please read the rules thread]

is there really any need to have the gps, wi-fi, bluetooth, and wireless network on if you are just sitting at school/work where your not using any gps apps or anything of the such, and just expecting phone calls and sms messages?and then there is the fact that you can always turn on the wireless network, gps, bluetooth, wi-fi whenever you need it.if you don't need it, don't use it.well, thats the way that i see it. :]

oh....so you're one of the creepsters who has there phone out 24/7 playing with all your apps to look cool, you just end up looking like a douchebag?hahaha. sorry. didn't really mean that, i mean i don't even know you,

Thanks for the kind words. I'm sure you did mean it, despite the attempt to play it off.

No, I am not one of those "creepsters".

I merely find it stupid to buy a "smart" phone, then shut down all the features that make it such.

Nor do I think that you should have to disable the features of a device to make it work in an acceptable manner. That, to me, is poor engineering.

If that's the way you feel about your phone, feel free to use it in the manner which you desire. It's YOUR phone.

I received the notification to do the update at 11:43 PM CST last night (am in Northern TX) and it went off without a hitch. The Eris does seem to be a bit more responsive and battery life was never really a problem for me but it is better I think as I have been messing with my phone more today and it's still at about 50%. I had a Moto Droid for 29 days before I got the Eris and the Droid's battery was better but the Eris lasts a day and I charge every night anyways...

Received the update 11:00am today. Does seem more responsive. At the time of the upgrade i was about 85% battery level and dropped to 70% by 9:00pm. Usually by 9:00pm I'm at 30 - 40%. So far it seems better:o

+1 ... by the way, you don't seem like a "creepster" to me ... but I don't really know you ;)

New York City and I got the update last night while i was out. I was drunk, and hit update. Phone went out for a little bit, but then started up and was fine.

Definitely less lag. Seems snappier, my battery is great never had an issue to begin with....

but now my 3g isn't working. It was at first. Mobile Network just says "attempting to connect" or something like that.

True enough. Me personally, I don't have battery issues and I don't turn off Wi Fi and GPS most of the time. I can make it through a full day. I keep a car charger in my car just in case mostly out of habit. The phone I had before this was a LG VX9400 and it got to the point where I couldn't make a single phone call without dying! But I make it through the full day with the Eris.

Got the upgrade when I got to work tonight at 11 pm. The only thing I've noticed so far is that my battery meter did get more accurate. I was at about 70% when I left home, but after the upgrade, it jumped up to 85%.

I've never had an issue with 3G/1X (that I'm aware of). Anytime I check, I'm always on 3G and/or wifi, so maybe I've just missed it. I'm a noob, I'll admit it.

One thing that is a little troubling is that my awake time seems to be a lot higher than it used to. Before the upgrade, I was almost always at about 10-13% after sleeping. Now it seems to be at about 30-45%. Thankfully, my battery doesn't seem to be affected.

24 hours since update. I live in a marginal 3g area, in that the phone was always struggling to maintain 3g signal. The phone switches to wi-fi most of the time at the house. So far, I can definitely say that battery life is better, and the "wakeup bar" now must be touched and dragged from the bar itself not anywhere above that on the screen. Should help inadvertent startups.

Atlanta, GA. Got the update sometime in the middle of the night. Did the update this morning. Now it has the 1.16 something or another. Haven't played with it much. Something about Monday meetings. Can't wait for 2.0.

Anyone know when the google navigation turn by turn is going to be rolled out? Is that part of the 2.0 upgrade?

For some reason, the update shut down my mobile network.

Check under settings --> Wireless controls. I bet you'll find that Mobile network is unchecked.

Got the update this morning. Haven't used the phone enough to determine whether it has any effect yet. I'm going to try loading up on applications and not killing them and see what happens.

I'm asking the same question again...sorry. I work offshore and don't have a cell signal, but I do have wifi. Well I keep getting the notification to upgrade but I was informed(from this thread) that I need cell service for the upgrade. Is there any way to put the notification off until I return to land in 10 days? Or will it upgrade over wifi?

It seems to me that if VZW can find your phone over wifi to let you know the update is available, then you should be able to update. I wouldn't think that your cell service has anything to do with it. This update is going to arrive via data channels (the 'internet', so to speak) and not over the voice system.

I'm no expert, but if it were me and I was sittin' out there on the oil rig (or wherever you are) I'd hit the update button...

My update was waiting for me Sunday morning when I woke up (North Florida).
Like others, flawless install, and improved battery life. Actually *I* think it's improved battery metering, rather than improved battery life. But in any case the battery shows a greater charge throughout the day, and doesn't do that 15% drop in the first hour thing any more.

I just updated and now the phone is just about completely unresponsive on the lock screen. It's almost like it doesn't register the finger swipe at all. If you keep at it, sooner or later it scrolls down but not in the smooth fashion that it did before the update, it just flies off of the bottom of the screen. I'm pretty much stuck having to hit the menu button to unlock the phone. Has anyone else had this problem?
