First Droid Eris update makes the slow OTA rollout starting tonight

I just updated and now the phone is just about completely unresponsive on the lock screen. It's almost like it doesn't register the finger swipe at all. If you keep at it, sooner or later it scrolls down but not in the smooth fashion that it did before the update, it just flies off of the bottom of the screen. I'm pretty much stuck having to hit the menu button to unlock the phone. Has anyone else had this problem?

You'll see lots of comments about this in the forum. You now have to START your unlike swipe ON the grey bar.

It almost seems like this update has created as many quirks or problems or annoyances that it was created to address.

We've discussed this before. Enjoy your "dumb phone" with good battery life. You should not need to shut down essential features of the phone to get reasonable battery life.
I had a "dumb" Samsung with great battery life. I'm making do just fine with the Eris by having chargers everywhere! One at home, one in the office, one in the car, even one for the motorcycle. Someday it will be great--for now it's okay.

My update is (finally) installing right now. I was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to come in... hah ;) ...aaaand it just finished, all booted back up.

I see the change that others have talked about regarding the lock screen, however thats not gonna affect me... since I got the thing I've been swiping from the gray arc down, so not a big deal to me.

Only thing that I really notice right off the bat is some of my programs which were doing the "disappearing icon trick" are now fine again. That's good!

Other than the lock screen working like it was supposed to in the first place, I don't see it as such.

Ya know, I had wondered if the *intended* behavior was supposed to be arc-down only, and not anywhere on the lock screen... I've been doing it that way (arc, down) since I got the phone, so I don't have to "re-train" myself... it just felt like that's how it was "supposed" to work. Glad someone else seems to think that as well :)

It seems that as a group, people don't do well with change. :)

I dont have any complaints about the update.

As for the battery, I knew I wouldnt be able to see a difference until I was at work and could compare to last week. I took the phone off the charger at 5:45 this morning ... I have sent some texts, checked email, and done a little internet surfing ... I am currently at 94% on the battery. Last week, doing the same things ... I would be at about 80% right now. I wonder if this is better battery management, or better metering. I wont know until the end of the day.

northwest AR, no update.

Got the update this morning before I left for work. Took about 5-7 minutes total with download, install, and reboot.

I've only had the phone for a few days, but I can already tell a difference ( battery and performance ).

I have not run the Advanced Task Killer after the reboot, so all the default services ( startups too ) are running...and there are plenty. Why do I have two last.fm processes by the way?

Battery still full green. Whereas before, after about 3 hours of moderate use, it would have shaved about two bars worth battery off.

I'm very, very happy with this phone now. Having a carrier/manufacturer provide updates that result in noticeable improvements is a huge plus in my book coming from ATT ( iPhone 3G and Samsung Eternity ).

I liked my iPhone 3G when I had it, but I felt "locked in" to Apple's way of doing things with the phone. And Samsung nver sent out updates. Apple req'd you use iTunes for updates.

Apps are cool, but I want to tweak the phone ( without 3rd party tools/hacks ) the way I like it and the stock Eris let's me do that and I get some really cool apps to boot.

Just can't say enough good things about this phone.

I thought the update hit my phone at 0140 today. I got the large notice, all of the anticipated screen images, the powering off and on, et al. When it finally came back up and stayed on, I noticed that the slide-to-unlock feature wasn't working, but I still had 1.5.

I didn't receive any kind of error message. The phone didn't die. I had a good battery (100% charged). I didn't fall asleep and hit some random cancel button. I didn't say anything bad about the phone or the new OS.

I don't know what happened. I guess I'll just have to wait to see if it will hit my phone again.

This update was not for a new OS ... still running 1.5. Read through the many threads and you will notice the slide-to-unlock feathure has changed a little.

Does anyone know if the 2.0 or 2.1 update will address the issue of the apps remaining open. I would really like to unistall this task killer garbage.

I think the better way to handle this is to also fix the issue of almost every app being opened upon device power-up or restart. Its crazy.

They could just do something as simple as sending a kill signal to the app if you press the back button out of the app. Some apps you download from the App Store will trap the signal from the back button. When you press back, you get the message "Are you sure you want to exit this program?". Or possibly a long press on the back button would just terminate the app?

And, if you want to leave an app running, just press home instead of back.

I believe there is an app in the app store that will "audit" your start-up ( remember msconfig on windows, but probably more like /etc/inittab on unix systems ) and you can remove stuff you don't want starting up. A bit of a pain, I agree and potentially dangerous.

Some more standards wrapped around the app store would prevent these sorts of things. Require the developer to have a on/off toggle ( in the apps settings ) for starting at start-up. Also require developers to code in an exit.

dolphin browser, if you press and hold the back button, it asks you if you want to close, or clear cache and close, pretty handy

Quick observation: Has anyone else noticed that the haptic feedback or vibration when pushing options seems to be more pronounced or stronger????

yeah i did notice that...i was thinking that i may be crazy, but i must not be if you noticed it as well

My guess is metering but it will be interesting to see. Thanks.

My guess too is the metering. Everyday when i turned on my phone(always charged the night before) it would read 98%,would never say 100% and it would drop to 80% within an hour at idle.

Right now its at 92% and i've been using it since i turned it on(over 2 hours).I actually have the gps on,which i always kept off unless i needed it.

Got my update earlier today and so far everything seems good. The battery life is pretty good too, my awake time before was 65% now it's 33%. Patiently waiting for 2.0 or 2.1 LOL :)

Got my update on Saturday. I had never been forced to pull the battery before the update, have done it twice since the update.

What's it doing that you're forced to pull the battery?

Both times have been while waking the phone from sleep, I press the End button, the screen comes on, then it is unresponsive. Swiping doesn't wake it, pressing the menu key doesn't wake it, hitting the end button again won't put it back to sleep.

I had a new text message the last time and the trackball continued to light and the LED flashed.
