Browse the web from a tethered phone

I've tried to get this working - but I don't seem to be able to. When I plug my phone in there is no "proxy" application, I've tried reinstalling it twice and nothing shows up, there's nothing in the application manager either. No errors or anything when installing but I can't find anything.

on another note, if nothing shows up, will this have a negative affect on my phone? Just wanna make sure because I don't see a way to un install it.

Try installing this one http://tinyurl.com/0108203 (G1 Application)

Sorry for the noob question, but I can't figure this out from the earlier posts. I really want to switch from Windows Mobile (Touch Pro) because I hate the buggy, slow UI. The only thing I like about that phone is the ability to tether the internet connection. I use it play internet poker at work on my Macbook (I work nights, alone). Would this program enable me to use my G1 data plan to connect to an online poker site (ie Pokerstars, Full Tilt) or is it strictly useful for browsing the web. Any help would be great appreciated.

Hello, I think I tried everything that this forum said and even more to make tethered work with mozilla firefox 3.0.5 and with the plugin foxproxy v2.8.10. My phone was detected but no internet page were displayed ... I finally found a solution that make everything work. Hope it can help some of you.

Manual proxy configuration, hostname : localhost, socks proxy v5
I lost my internet connection so I had no other choice to have a confortable use of internet at home.

I have ubuntu 8.10 and I use the same driver configuration and authorisation than hardy :

  1. Login as root and create this file: /etc/udev/rules.d/50-android.rules.For Gusty/Hardy, edit the file to read:
    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666"
  2. Now execute:
    chmod a+rx /etc/udev/rules.d/50-android.rules

the only thing that was wrong was the version of my android SDK. I had android-sdk-linux_x86-1.0_r1 then I change and used the last version android-sdk-linux_x86-1.0_r2 and then everything worked fine ...

So my advice : check your version of the android sdk :)

Good luck everybody, hope it help.
I ll be happy to see the proxy working for all my ubuntu applications ... ( and particulary I need skype and its webcam, if anyone as some tips about it ) but lets see.

Thanks again for the work done on that software and the community support.

Okay I followed all the directions to a T.

I installed tetherbot on my phone.
It's running and Start Socks proxy is started.
I installed the android driver on my computer.
I ran the adb forward tcp:1080 tcp:1080
and it runs fine with no errors, And it says starting daemon service

I went into my proxt conriguration in Firefox and put for the SOCKS proxy localhost and port 1080

and i go to load a website and it just gives a normal error. It's like not even trying to direct to the proxy, can someone help?

I just got the G1 not too long ago and was totally intrigued by the prospects of tethering it to my MacBook (unfortunately, no 3G where I live yet).

I trolled through this thread for about 45 minutes to get it to work on my laptop. A little difficult, had most of the typical problems, but eventually got it figured out.

FoxyProxy was the most helpful plus realizing I needed to get at the adb file through command prompts (that's a little bit vague in your directions, Graham). Other than that, brilliant, well-executed, and my congrats to everybody.

l3wis, your advice was particularly helpful in getting it to work on the FireFox side. Thanks.

No problem man. Good thing you got it 2 work.

Could I be running into problems by not using a computer with USB 2.0? I have this old laptop I've been trying this with over the last few days and haven't had any luck. Followed the youtube and pictured tutorial above.

The computer is running XP.

Nah, probably not a usb issue. what kind of error are you getting?

I haven't posted in this thread yet, but i got this up and running when this thread was only on page 1. Thanks very much, this program is awesome.

It's just giving me the error that the proxy server is refusing the connection. I've tried restarted the computer and the phone several times.

Thanks to everyone that's been working on this and making the tutorials! I know this will be great once I get it going.

I went over to the parent's house last night and tried this on their laptop computer. I had it up and running before you can say "adb forward tcp:1080 tcp:1080!" So it must be something with this old laptop.

I was on edge and was getting 69kbps down and 97kbps up. I thought it was strange the upload was going faster.

I forgot to mention in my post when i got it working, i had to make 1 change to my Firefox config before it would work, in Firefox type about:config in the address bar, type proxy in the filter, change the entry network.proxy.sock_remote_DNS to true, and you're golden. This is on the latest Firefox on OS X.

How can you get the entire computer to run off the proxy, so i can get on AIM and stuff like that.

For some reason also Myspace will not let me sign in and youtube is not buffering videos, is there a reason for this?

Most AIM messengers work with your Internet Options settings since Internet Explorer doesn't work with this thn all other programs are not going to work..

For some reason Internet Explorer 7 doesn't work with Socks v5 which are needed for this Proxy..

Myspace and youtube work for me. Are you using FoxyProxy?

yeah i am using foxy proxy i just wnt to make sure i set up the white list and the URL patterns correctly, what do I put in there I may of made a mistake in there...

yeah i got rid of the wildcard section and URL patterns section and set FIrefox to use the PHONE proxy (what i named it) for everything. But myspace just endlessly asks me to verify, and youtube videos will not load, it just sits there. Any thoughts?

I am trying to tether G1 to MAC.

Downloaded & Installed app on G1 no problem (I hope)
Downloaded & installed android sdk OK I hope!

The bit I don't get is:
Linux/Mac: ./adb forward tcp:8080 localabstract:Proxy
How do I do this? (in words of one syllable please!)

I can probably manage set-up of Firefox

Thanks for what looks like a great app, but some of us are technical morons and need a bit of help!

Well hello everyone! I have good news. Remember we can't use AIM's or Internet Explorer with the new app (socks version) Well i got a solution. I found this program called "Proxifier" you can download it at http://www.proxifier.com/distr/ProxifierSetup.exe (30 Day trial) i was able to use Internet Explorer MSN messenger Frostwire and youtube videos load faster.. :) Give it a try

How to use it.
Open the program---->Options---->Proxy settings----->Add----->
(server address: 127.0.0.1 Port: 1080 Protocol: Socks V5---->OK---Ok

That's all you need to do Open Internet explorer MSN and see if it works...

P.S Keep in mind that you still need to run the adb application to open the port...
