Hi

I have just bought this phone and although intially there was no lag whatsoever and I was sure not to mess around with settings, lately SGS has been lagging so much that rooting and lagfixing has become more of a necessity than a whim.

Keeping this in mind, I have downloaded

1) RyanZa's 'Z4root'
2) RyanZa's 'OCLF'
3) Titanium backup.

I understand that I first have to root the phone, take the backup through titanium and then apply OCLF, I have a couple of questions regarding this.

Q1. Is it possible to upgrade the phone after rooting and applying lagfix? If yes, then should I simply unroot my phone

Q2. Should I be checking whether my phone is 2e recovery (am I right?) enabled. How important is this.

Q3. If something goes wrong and I take my phone to samsung outlet, will they be able to detect that I have been messing around with the settings and thus declare it out of warranty?

Hoping to get some answers. I thank you for reading so far (even if you might not have all the answers:) )

Regards

A1: remove lagfix first before upgrading/installing custom rom. rooting & unrooting can be done by z4 root

A2: Boot into recovery mode (hold Vol up + home button + powerbutton). You can see what recovery version that you have

A3: It's really hard to brick this phone. To restore, you can always flash india's official eclair firmware (DDJG4) using Odin.

edit: A2: most custom rom requires 2e recovery or it won't work. if you are on eclair, you are most likely to have it.

thanks gmhafiz for your answers. I do have a couple of more.

1. I just tried booting into the recovery mode (after first switching off the phone) however the phone got restarted normally. I first pressed 'vol up' then 'Home' and while I was pressing these 2, I pressed the power button. But nothing different happened and it got on normally. Am I doing something wrong

2. As per your Answer 3 about reflashing the phone to official firmware, is it available easily for download. Any link about the procedure will be very helpful in following this up.

3. I intend to apply only OCLF and not change the ROM as such (or applying OCLF and changing ROM are the same thing :)) . What difference will I see in the performance between these two

4. Will I lose factory installed apps (alongwith the other apps that I have installed) after applying OCLF.

I know I am in the danger of creating a virtual FAQ for the process but hopefully I will get some answers to quell these doubts

Regards

Make sure ur doin it properly, u need to let go of the home button at the GT-i9000 splash screen.

If ur still having problems, maybe ur 3 button combo isn't working.

Here's how to fix it
[FIX] Release: 3-button combo fix for any firmware version - xda-developers

4. Will I lose factory installed apps (alongwith the other apps that I have installed) after applying OCLF.

no it doesn't do anything to any of ur apps... :)

Hi samunique500

I have the Upgrade-1 for Eclair so I dont know whether samsung has blocked this recovery mode or not. I went through the link that you provided and it seems that I will have to do some more reading before I take the plunge ( not so technically oriented you see :) )

Thanks for your help

A1: Try it several times. I myself had difficulty doing it the first time. Try pressing the power button for 5 seconds after holding vol up & home button. I found my SGS's power button to have a specific point of pressing in order to work.

If still unsuccessful, follow the link given by samunique500.

A2: Googled this: [Q] Restore original firmware (DDJG4) - xda-developers

A3: Applying OCLF and changing ROM are not the same thing. OCLF only modifies the filesystem (no need to be too technical) a bit but make no changes to your apps, data, other settings and customizations. Applying custom ROM is like changing the whole software.

If you apply Doc_Kalpik custom ROM, you will see noticeable increase in performance - no lag.

A4: No. Moreover, you can undo the operation easily.

Hey Kalpik, I installed your JPO 7.6.2 ROM just yesterday and everything seemed like running all smooth and had me like a happy camper...only to see it was short lived, for I was not receiving any incoming calls. Every time there is an incoming call, the phone would just ring once and the signal icon would just circle out and then it would be back again. No incoming calls could still come through. I then tried different SIM but still the same issue. I then did factory reset and tried installing the ROM from CWM again and now its in the endless loop of main screen-turning off-main screen. Please help guys....I know you are genius and would definitely come out to help for a dumb a** like me.

Boot into recovery, do a data wipe, and install just the base rom package.. That should get you up and running..

Thanks Kalpik for getting so quick...hope you are fine now. Was just wondering what would be the base rom package... are you saying install your ROM but not choose any LAG fix/tweaks.

I just wiped off the data and had the ROM installed again but to see the same issue.

EDIT: I got that done with your instructions Kalpik, thanks for saving me there. Just for the information, if I need to go back to the stock ROM, how would I do that? Please don't misconstrue, I'm in love with your ROM :-)

I bought my SGS 2 months back I am having the firmware 2.1 update-1
baseband version I9000DDJF6 kernel 2.6.29 ECLAIR.
when I connect to KIES it shows that a update is available for your mobile which is JG4. I tried to update, all went successfully but after reboot it took much time so took out the battery and restarted the phone. The phone could not restart was stuck at the samsung S . I took the phone to the samsung service centre they flashed phone and returned to me after 10 days. with the same baseband version JF6.
Now when ever connect to KIES it shows an upgrade is available should I upgrade my phone is this upgrade the FROYO 2.2 . If again the same thing happens then what should I do. I am absolutely new to all this.
Please help.

[APPMOD][07.11.10] Brut Google Maps 4.6.0.4686-brut17 - xda-developers

check this out....no need for root

I would suggest to install "maps4.6.0.4686-brut-renamed-tagged.apk" this will keep the original google maps intact and this will be installed as different app
Hi,

I have installed that and and it is working for me. Gps is very fast compare to my nok 5800.
But it is not showing exact position on map. I have installed Sygic mobile maps also but the result is same. position is way out of actual. My building is in google map and gps not showing the exact position.
I had tried out some manual fix also from some forum but still the same.

Any idea of fixing this gps issue ?
