Root A few doubts about the rooting process

Hello everybody and thank you for the great support you're giving to the common user of Android and particularly HTC Desire.

First my case: I currently live in spain and have a branded orange mobile. I want to root the mobile for two big reasons: unbranding and internal memory spare room.

The doubts are:
1) I would be happy just to unbrand the phone, so if there's a more simple method to do this without rooting I would probably do it.

2) A Goldcard is made before anything else in the process of rooting, meaning even if I don't root I can do the goldcard anyway without any kind of complication (Brick)?

3) unrevoked method means I don't need to install the hboot?

4) The process of rooting itself doesn't provide any stock rom. So before rooting I already need a rom or else the phone will be dead. Or the process of rooting already involves the presence of a rom?

5) I like sense but I can live without it. But can you suggest me some reliable and similar rom to the stock (I heard leedroid) but also one without the sense but also very stable? I really don't wanna to flash the radio but I also don't know how to check which radio to I have and also I whould like the app2sd+.


I'm sorry if this are repeated questions, but I tried to check as many threads as I can and I wasn't superconvinced. I think we all feel the same before venturing into something that can ruined something of some value.

My model number is HTC Desire A8181. The sofware number is 2.22.75.3. And the baseband version (radio perhaps?) is 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14
 
You can just debrand the phone using a gold card and a stock RUU. The issue you have is the Orange RUU has never been available so you'll never be able to go back to stock for warranty purposes.

If you don't care about that then you can get the latest unbranded RUU from my signature and then Google gold cards to find a guide to make one
 
You don't need a gold card to root, but once rooted and something goes wrong, your goldcard can get you past security and be a big help if when sorting out a problem. You can make a goldcard without risk of bricking your phone. Your goldcard is unique to your phone so once something does go wrong you may not be able to make one after a problem has occurred.

Once you have a goldcard use the latest Unrevocked to root, once rooted it will reflash your Orange ROM Except you'll now have root access. I would advise installing another ROM though, this can be done after your nerves have settled after rooting so don't worry. Leedroid is a good noob choice, make sure you choose the A2SD version.

So making the Gold Card is useless for me? Because I can't revert back to the orange rom? But from my understanding doing a Gold Card and having the nandroid wouldn't be possible to revert to Orange stock rom that I had? I think I didn't understand the Gold Card thing. I though I was like you saving info that your mobile had before rooting that eventually help you reverting the rooting process and of course to reverse you should have some kind of backup, so I though that nandroid would do it... :confused:

Ok, so Gold Card like a backdoor key? So using unrecoked will give me more access to which I can install different roms, could who give a lesser noob choice but still in the range of noobness?

No. MAKE A GOLD CARD. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ROOT WITHOUT HAVING FIRST MADE A GOLD CARD.

Unrevocked is by far the easiest method of rooting, you can also get goldcard helper from the market.
 
The guy doesn't want to root - what's with the obsession with rooting!!!

To the OP:

If you wanna debrand you need a gold card. Without you cannot flash a non-Orange ROM. The issue you have is if you decide to debrand (or root) you won't be able to go back to an Orange ROM as there isn't one available

I suggest debranding first, see if it does what you want it to do. Once you've used it a few weeks and you still feel like something's missing THEN look into rooting. Don't just jump in as everyone else does it. I don't as the stock ROM does exacty what I want it to
 
But if its branded of course I can't put another SIM card :(

So this mean I need to root? or its going to be the same? Where can I buy a code safely?
 
Have you tried?

Anyway, you'll still be able to use your SIM card as it's locked to that company. Debranding/rooting won't change that so you can still debrand
 
So rooting will not change the sim lock? So for me it's useless then. I want a phone to use different sim cards because I live abroad.

Seeing as you never said in your original post you could've saved a lot of time by just asking if rooting unlocked the SIM lock. Ah well...

It's all irrelevant though.

But er do need to be careful we don't suggest rooting unless its the only decent solution. Many people dwon't understand what they have and how to maintain it.
 
Why is rooting called rooting btw? I know its from the root \dir but jailbreaking, or hacking is a lot more sassy, cooler and a bit more out there, dangerous, a bit woaoooaawooooa.

Rooting sounds as if were doing something with a spatula and vegetables in the bathroom!
