Root What does root mean?

I know this is probably a very silly question. What is rooting? I have had my samsung fascinate a week and I love it. It's definatley not a blackberry (which I had for over 7 years) It definatley has a learning curve to it.

Anyways, I see it often, people talking about rooting phones and whatnot. What does that mean?

Thanks in advance

Root = jailbreak

Ability to access functions the manufacturer/carrier would rather you didn't

Root is on Android

same as

Jailbreak is on Iphone

same as

Unlock is on Windows Mobile

Same concept, each with a slang term dedicated to that family of operating system. The idea is to "unlock" the OS so that you can make changes that are not allowed by the manufacturer of the device. Like... applying custom ROMs, updating software before it is even released to the public, enabling hidden features, removing software that you never wanted to begin with.

Understand that "rooting" comes at a price. You assume all responsability and your warranty is null and void at this point. Many folks consider this and still desire to do it, some prefere to never do it, while yet others desire to wait until the 1 year warranty expires and then get into rooting. Once you root, you own it.... broken, bricked, cracked, fried, or functioning, it is your baby.

Speaking of which, I had never even heard of terminal emulator till OMJ introduced me to it, very slick little app there. Big time thumbs up

Really? Hmmm i think it may have.been the dx it was so popular on then...,i take it for granted to just keep it on my phone but i never use it

On the dx everyone seemed to use it because they didn't have the sdk set up or knew how to do it
