Root Swapping SD Cards

I was wondering what I have to do to swap my SD card to a bigger class 6 card. I have velocity .3, using the a2sd, have the trubo 4 with kernel installed. Do I have to format the card, then reinstall velocity so it sends my apps to the ext portion of the card?
 
Assuming you don't currently have your apps on the old sd card, just partition the new sd card as outlined in other threads on the forum and the next time you reboot Velocity will see the new partition and automatically move all your apps to the new sd card.
 
I do have my apps on the sd card now...I do know I'd have to reinstall them, just didn't know if velocity would move them to the new card. I'll probably just reflash velocity when I get the new card, then I'll know it's right.
 
why couldn't you just copy the contents of the ext partition from one card to the other? if it's the same data, wouldn't it be read the same? (i'm new at this, so spare me if I'm way off base)
 
neither windows or android see the ext partition...I don't have linux on my pc or else it would have been no problem

New or not.....
You are deffinately NOT way off base. just a little. LOL That way wont work because you wont be able to copy the ext partition via windows because it is Linux based.

all you gotta do is make A Nandroid + EXT backup via Drellisdees Recovery. Now Partition the SD card + do what Meeksman13 said and copy the windows portion of the SD card to the New card.
Now make sure the Nandroid you just made is also on the new SD Card. It should already be if you just copied everything.

Now with the New Card in the phone Boot up into Recovery Via the power + send + menu and Restore the Nandroid. The Nandroid will put the ext Partition back perfectly as well as the rest of your phone and you have all the contents of your windows portion of your SD Card intact so you are now GOOD TO GO BABY!!

Reboot that phone and enjoy that New Class 6 Senior.

**edit make sure and make your partition ext 3 then finally 4 in order to get the best use out of your new SD**
 
Still have to get the new card...found out how much they are and only found one so far at best buy....60 for an 8 gb class 6...I might just wait, at least till after Christmas
 
Soco check on newegg they have some great 8GB cards that are class 6 for less then $20 or right around $20 and I think one had free shipping! Hope that helps.

I got a 16gb for $17 From Fry's

Now granted it was A rebate special but still. Also I dont know if its a higher class. However it works great and fast and its BIG!!
 
I'm gonna check newegg and see whats up. Yeah, best buy wanted 60 for that 8gb class 6...only had one brand too. Sears, walmart, kmart, radio shack...none of them had class 6 cards at all!
 
There was another post in the regular ally section where someone was asking about a 8gb class 6 card and all the good brands mentioned are sold on newegg so pick one up thats what I did and they are great!! Glad I was able to help :-)
 
Can the Ally use High Capacity (SDHC) type cards? IIRC we are limited to 16GB right?..I look forward to hearing how the swap goes 'cause I want to do this too.

I found this post discussing SD cards and EXT2, 3, and 4 type memory:

A2sd ROMs - ext2/ext3 is the choice for sdcards!!! - Simply Android

In short it says EXT2 is still an optimal choice because it reduces the number of write cycles to the memory on the card in normal use, and that flash memory write cycles have a finite limit.

But it also goes on to talk about better speed performance using EXT4 and Class 6 SD cards. But the card works harder using EXT4 because of the journaling. So it sounds like each user's choices might be made based upon their individual wants.

I'll just leave mine on ext2 then since I am not having any real speed\performance issues. I thought maybe there was some other type of benefit to using ext4.

I am completely green at using Linux, although I did just install Ubuntu 10.10 so I can learn more about Terminal commands and file structure, which I guess are shared with the Android OS as well. The only thought that comes to mind from what I have read is that newer versions of Linux distributions use EXT4 formatting for their files. So I don't know, for those who want to interact their Ally with a Linux PC, whether there might be any benefit if both devices had the same format on them. Aside from that I agree with your thinking. Unless I learn differently I plan to leave my SD card as EXT2 as well.
