Internal Memory and Bloatware

This is just a little rant:

Why the hell did HTC only leave about 300MB free internal memory if they (and Sprint) are going to continue feeding us baked in Apps?? (Nova, Blockbuster, etc) :confused:

Even with Apps2SD, I've been hovering around 50MB of free space and I've only had my phone for 6 months!

It really sucks to have to uninstall apps that I enjoy and use to make room for bloatware that I will never use (Blockbuster) and for Demos that I've tried MONTHS ago on my own and do not want (Nova)

I sure hope the next iteration of the EVO (Evo 2?) has at LEAST 8GB of internal memory.
 
I agree. I updated too and I received for the first time a running out of space error. I don't know how much free space there was with the prior files but I never received this error before.
 
guys you all represent a small fraction of the masses that sprint is looking to get to purchase these handsets. they also have services to sell (blockbuster, Qik, amazon, sprint tv, nascar, etc etc) and what better way to sell those bandwidth heavy apps than with their flagship android phone with 4G--which is also an item they are trying to peddle.

for folks like the OP and many others, as earlymon suggested, ROOT is for you. sprint will only put out the MINIMUM it needs to make a huge ROI. i understand your argument and i think the majority of us reading this post will agree with you 100%, however do realize this phone is made for the MASSES.. not just for the hard core folks... ;-)
 
Yeah, I'm seriously leaning towards rooting now. I will never, ever need a NASCAR app, not interested in the Nova game, etc. Removing or at least freezing the bloatware is good enough reason for me to get over my fear of rooting lol

I'm totally ok with that. But why not at least follow Microsoft's and Apple's model - sure, ok, distribute with demo and bloatware - but let the user uninstall it.

That would remove a large driver for rooting - something they hate - and would also alleviate what's bound to be a new round of complaints over memory.

I think they could easily meet their market goals without this kind of jack-booted nonsense.

Android's a full-up OS, not a feature-phone OS.

Hey Sprint - take a clue on how to distribute bloatware from the big boys like Microsoft - they've been distributing operating systems longer than you and they know how to do this properly.

There. Am I done ranting? Why, yes. Yes, I am. ;)
 
also if your running low on memory and wanna play the Nova demo you need to install it, an additional 75mb
 
LOL how much space that Blockbuster app take? I would like to give it a whirl, but dont want to unroot, wish there was a ROM with it installed
 
I would never say I'm a "hard core" user ... but at this rate, there will be 100+ baked in undeleteable apps in a few months. I would not care if those apps did not run down my battery and take up valuable resources.... but I will bet anything that they DO, in fact, take away from the resources of the phone AND drain the battery quicker.

The following are the apps that I want gone from my phone - not to mention some stuff I don't even know what they do: Amazon MP3, App Sharing, Blockbuster, Car Panel, Flickr, FM Radio, Footprints, Friend Stream, HTC Weather, Internet (use a diff app), Kindle, Music (use a diff app), NASCAR, News, News and Weather, Nova, Peep, Qik, Settings Storage, Setup, Sprint Football, Sprint Navigation, Sprint TV, Sprint Zone, Talk, Teeter, Twitter, Voice Dialer, Voice Recorder, Voice Search

Imagine what else will be added in the next OTA update? I mean... is my EVO going to become a paperweight with just phone call/text capability because I can't install the apps I really want due to lack of space??
 
A word of caution:

To those of you reading this thread and intending to root your phone to remove bloatware be careful. Yes you can use an app like Titanium Backup to remove apps like Sprint Nascar (mentioned above) once you are rooted, but there ARE apps that SHOULD NOT be removed as they are too deeply woven into the OS. To anyone wishing to remove apps, I'd strongly suggest searching over at XDA first. There is a list of safe apps/bloatware to remove and a list of some apps/.apk's that should be left alone.

For what it's worth, the Amazon MP3 app that would continue to start in the background no matter what I did was the last straw that led me to removing tons of apps that are useless to me via root and Titanium.

Yeah, agree.

In my opinion, if you're going to do that kind of surgery, you're better off getting an alternate rom that's already slimmed down for you. Several of those exist, with and without Sense.

Take a skinny and build it up if your goals are that draconian.

I toss a bit of stuff from the stock rooted rom and I'm happy.

The beauty of rooted Android - different users can get really happy.

You'll probably find close to what you want without major tinkering. Hope this helps, trader914.
 
I am desperately waiting for a one click root for the 3.7 update, which also works on my HW 004.. I wish Asurion had sent me a new 003 instead :(... oh well..

I'm not sure about many of these, but you definitely don't want to remove Talk.

From what I've seen, the safest way for the (rooted) end-user to remove unwanted apps is to get TitaniumBackup and freeze the app for a day or two first. If that doesn't cause any problems, then it should definitely be safe to remove. If it does cause a problem, then you can simply unfreeze it.
 
With this update and Sprint pushing out Blockbuster (seriously?) and some game, I'm seriously considering rooting and custom ROM.

While I understand there are probably financial reasons behind these decisions (company pays Sprint $X to include an app), I'm really tired of having this kind of thing shoved down my throat. It's not optional and it's not removable (without rooting).

So, I'll be doing some research over the holidays to free myself from the shackles of Sprint's attempts to make money by crapping up my phone.
 
Coming from a Hero user, this story is old news, new phone. Root will help give superuser permissions to do whatever you please, but like everyone has said, do research and then do more research. ;)

I hate the uninstallable junk they put on updates. I don't mind that they put them on there, provided they don't cause problems, are quickly and easily uninstalled, and don't cause problems if uninstalled.

I don't care how Sprint or HTC make money with advertisers and partners as long as they give an option to get rid of this stuff. I don't mind Sense when it doesn't have all the extra nonsense added.

yeah I agree with you, this is crazy with the Bloat Ware knowing we don't have enough internal memory. I am a stock user. So I am very careful with how many apps I download. If I don't use a app a lot, I remove it from my phone. So yes I would like to have this stuff gone but, I have not received a low memory notification yet.

Completely agree! I downloaded the update and while I think it's great they added swype but do we really need Blockbuster and Nova? I had Nova on my 3GS and it's a cool game but 80mb just to play the demo?! Plus I have no desire to use Blockbuster. 2 things they could of done. Make these apps deletable and put them in the markeplace or at least make sure you can at least transfer them onto your memory card.
 
Just to let everyone know, I have a rooted Hero, I scroll through the Evo threads because my wife has the Evo and I'm trying to keep up with anything new for her. Before the Evo, she also had a rooted Hero. That said......



How in the heck are you guys running out of internal memory on the Evo?:confused::confused: With apps 2 sd native, clearing cache on a regular basis (even though this is annoying now having to do it manually), she installed the latest update on the Evo and she still has over 290mb internal memory left. This is with all the same apps (on the Hero minus root apps) plus another 20-25 apps. On the Hero she had around 50mb. Even with all the Sprint crapware, not even a comparison:confused:
 
What we need to do is collectively write our congressmen/senators. Explain the problem to the government. Tell them that by forcing these apps on our phones the companies are creating a monopoly of which apps we are forced to use and which apps we can use. If everyone wrote a letter, I think they would listen to us. We are not asking for them not to install the bloatware, just for use to be able to remove it.

In the past, forced apps where necessary because access to the internet was very limited. If you deleted a required app you could not reinstall it. But today, with full access, deleting unwanted apps and reloading them from the internet is 100% possible. I think we should create a letter asking for the removable, by user, of these apps.

Who is with me? Possible topics.

1.) They create privacy issues with the user, even if the user does not use them. Since we do not have control over using these apps, they can send any user information, including personal information, with out our knowledge or permission. Ever wonder why amazon mp3 store pops up every time you visit a website about music?

2.) They a monopoly of what can and can not be installed on the phone. You have to use Sprints media player because it is forced on you. Legal president is windows media play problem in Europe. By forcing an app on your phone they are creating a monopoly for that app.

3.) Forced apps create performance issues that impair usability of the phone. Apps like amazon mp3 store, footprints and other suck battery life a and use data that the consumer is paying for.

4.) Only phones are allowed to force software on to you. If it was a pc, fcc would slap the company silly.

Instead of bitching let use throw together a local well written letter that we can send to all local and federal goverments, demanding the ability to root by default.
 
This is exactly why im rooting my phone this weekend.

I've had my evo for 4 months and it's time to dive in. I know nothing about rooting but i'm reading the stickies on the rooting page and hopefully that will guide me to freedom:rolleyes:

It does not matter how much space it takes, but rather, whether we want it or not. I agree with Early Mon let us uninstall it, its our freakin hardware!! :mad:
