Root New to rooting.

I am new to rooting and have been doing some reading on it. I already rooted my phone. I have install Astro and Titanium. I want to now install a custom rom. I just need some guideance. How (if need be) do I back my phone up to my computer? Also what custom rom should I use?

First of all, welcome to the root community :)...im glad to hear you did some research before rooting your phone. Some questions of course before pushing you in any particular direction:

1. do you have the samsung drivers installed on your computer?
2. do you have clockwork recovery installed by pushing it through odin?
3. do you have all the neccessary odin restore files (kernel, recovery, system, pit)
4. if you have cwr installed, have you made a nandroid backup?
5. do you have the android sdk installed on your computer and have access to adb?

the best way to backup your phone is to make a nandroid backup in cwr if you havent done so already. this is saved on your sdcard under clockworkmod--backup....if you want to be super cautious you can copy these backups (about 400mb) to your desktop to have a backup of your backup

as far as custom roms go...we have a few options...if you are fairly new to rooting and have not installed the dj05 leak...then you are on dio1 in all likelyhood and i would recommend jts 0.4 superclean rom in rom manager or here: [ROM] Super Clean De-Binged DI01 + AOSP apps - Updated 10/30 Version 0.4 - xda-developers

you may also want to check out custom kernels (id avoid anything voodoo related until you fully understand what it is/does) in rom manager under jt1134 and nonvoodoo....anything in the 11/1xx range should be good for you.
 
I downloaded the samsung drivers to root so yes. As far as 2-5 no, and I dont have the slightest idea what that is. Like I said this is my first root so be gentel. I will read more up on 2-5. Thanks for the help.

Quick question as I am about to take the plunge as well, but I am considering sticking with DI01 (like SuperClean or SuperDark) and trying out one of JT's kernels. I keep reading warnings for those newer to root to avoid getting into DJ05 just yet, so I thought I would stick with the basics.

My only question before deciding on this is how much do those custom roms affect battery life generally? I know flashing particular kernels and toggling the settings can have an effect, but what about simply flashing the rom to one of these? Is it that significant? (I'm trying to give myself incentive to finally try this)

Roms can have an effect for.the better if they slim down on apps that tend to run in the background or get triggered by other apps....mostly kernels are the big difference in battery thoughp

By "those" custom roms, I meant SuperDark or SuperClean. You have convinced me to give it a shot with all that persuasive answer :p

Here's hoping for an improvement.
 
with the help of nitsu and saps I took the plunge a few weeks ago and haven't looked back. I think I'm addicted now...running super clean with geeknik stupid fast and battery life is amazing, and I am a heavy user. The DJ05 radio update fixed my GPS as well!

Was jumping to DJ05 difficult for you even though you weren't too experienced with it? I'd like to get there as quickly as possible but I don't want to be too risky and make a mistake. Not as many "how to's" and "do's and don'ts" available, and it seems the bar is a little higher in terms of difficulty.

i never want to push someone toward a particular mod/leak...but really upgrading to djo5 is quite painless. since you have used odin to install clockwork recovery and obviously have the samsung drivers installed its not a big deal.

[RELEASE] DJ05 rom, kernel, radio - xda-developers

you need to get the radio file...which you push in odin under the pda button with your phone in download mode

you need a dj05 rom...there are several out there, but grab the one in there to start. once you've flashed the radio in odin...then you flash one of these roms in cwr.

and you need a dj05 kernel...there are several in rom manager as well as here and xda....after flashing the rom, let it boot...then boot back into cwr and flash the kernel. :)

Not at all..follow the steps below from Nitsu, if you want to go DJ05, and you will be up and running in no time.
Actually had a friend come by last night with the new white SF and he wanted to get the GPS working and better battery life so we rooted and loaded CWR, loaded the radio file, then jt's .9 DJ05 ROM and geeknik's stupid fast kernel and in less than 30 minutes he was grinning ear to ear. Of course after loading CWR we took a full backup just in case.

I am going to give this a try when I get some time this week.

I am now rooted and have everything set to go. I just want to make sure I can sit down and concentrate when I do it. Need to make some time to avoid the holiday stress and then I'll be good to go.

I'll post an update as soon as I make any progress.

My only question is: I push in Odin under the PDA button, and then I reboot AND then flash the rom and kernel?

I just want to make sure I don't flash the radio, and then start the phone up and get into trouble since all I see are warning not to mix D101 stuff with the DJ05 stuff.

As long as I can flash the radio, and then go back in CW and flash the rom and kernel this should be really easy.

You are on the right track. Once the modem is pushed via ODIN, it's DJ05 ROM and kernel time.
 
For what it's worth, my approach was to setup a DJ05 baseline (stock DJ05, kernel) that I could always return to. Then progress from there with the different ROMs, kernels.

EDIT: I never did return though...

Okay thanks. I think that is my plan. And I only need to wipe cache, correct? Although it sounds like the safe route is to wipe Data and Cache always.

I follow the advice nitsu gave a while back (see below) and have never had an issues. I do use Titanium backup, which you can use as well since you are rooted, to back up my apps/data prior to wiping data/cache and then after I get the new ROM and kernel loaded I go and reinstall titanium backup for the market and restore my apps/data-just do not ever restore system data as that could cause issues.

ROM: wipe data and cache
Kernel: wipe cache

yeah while many dont data wipe on roms (and in truth at this point on these roms it really isnt) i do, to ensure best possible setup. when we get aosp or vanilla roms in the future, it will be a must

What exactly qualifies as system data? I don't care about my app settings, so I am using appbrain for most of them just because it is faster than Titanium Backup. On Titanium Backup I just backed up some apps that I do care about in regards to settings and things.

Okay, thanks a lot. I am about to hit go.

I don't worry about being back at factory reset because other than contacts synced with google, I can't think of anything on here I care about losing. So, I think I'll go the safe route and do the full data and cache wipe.
