Root Very interesting 24 hours

Mr. Ed

Extreme Android User
So... I haven't quite experienced anything like this, and I am sure I will determine what the cause is, but thought I would throw this out there for all of you.

For those that don't know I am running Myn's latest with Netarchy 4.2.1 and have been for a couple of weeks with absolutely NO ISSUES. No silly nilly task killers ...you know better than to ask me that :D

I have made 3 changes over the weekend...and only one in the last 24 hours.

First I installed Camera Fun Pro (awesome Cam app btw)
Second Santa Cam (fun for 3 minutes tops)
3rd a gps/travel app that seems to have disappeared which brings me to issues
swapped battery to stock battery for a few days

also auto updated google market

1. my apps are completely disappearing. Gone..as if they were never installed. I used it..now a couple of days later it is completely gone. ESPN score center, the travel app, Pandora even

I have had to restore backups of apps that I know were previously installed/restored

2. Settings are changing on their own. Volume, notification etc. ringtones for individuals, txt, or email are all changing to random music files on the phone.

4. Over the past 24 hours my battery life has gone to crap.. Absolutely nothing contributing to this..no wake locks, rogue apps, nothing at all. I went from 5% per hour drainage to about 30% per hour drainage. Time without signal 0%

5. Widgets are just acting plain crazy..clocks that previously worked now don't update time, battery widgets don't refresh as phone is charging but do refresh while battery is draining

6. Phone keeps saying it is low on internal storage

So...I have some theories...but was curious of what some of your thoughts might be...and definitely curious if anyone else has experienced the same.

I know the typical troubleshooting steps and I am running through those now, but really want some other input on this one. It came out of nowhere.

Starting with loose/bad stock battery
loose sd card
bad info in dalvik or cache

and then going from there.

You know, that kind of sounds like it could be an issue with the sd card. Do you use a2sd? That doesn't really explain the battery drain. Have you tried a different rom (from scratch) to address that issue? Also, in switching to the stock battery, did you wipe battery stats? I haven't read up on it, but I wonder if you need to wipe those when switching. It's hard to troubleshoot for someone that usually helps everyone else :p.

so far...it appears to have been the stock battery

I pulled the stock battery, re seated the sd card, put everything back together and it was no better than before, so bad that I just turned the phone off

Just got home...I have put the extended battery back in and everything is working fine.

how would a sd card contribute to bad battery life?????? After i flashed the new radios i have been getting terrible battery life. maybe its that im not sure though.

well, it wasn't a bad sd card in my case but if the sd card were going bad the phone would potentially spend a lot of time searching for it/data

Ever since using myns rom i had a problem with the sd card... It was affecting my camera/camcorder and giving me an error message when i would open those apps. To fix the problem i had to format my sd card and move all the files back on.
I wonder if our problems are some what related considering i pretty much copied your set up... "rom/kernal"

By NO means an expert (you've probably forgot more than I know) but just a thought. Could it be possible that battery draw using a hybrid kernel that scales voltages have been the culprit? I know the phone is only supposed to draw X amount of power but if Y amount is available would that change the dynamics? Interesting though. I use the same setup (ROM/Kernel) and change batteries occasionally but only to another 1500 not the extended. Never encountered this behavior.

BTW I was not in the "let the kernel settle" camp for a long time; it just didn't seem to make sense, but alas, I firmly believe that now as my experience in kernel hopping has demonstrated over and over again. No logic or science, just real results after a couple of days or so. Somehow it seems like kernels learn your phone hardware and usage. Could changing the power available have been a tipping point?

Very interesting idea...and what is more interesting is I have never had a set up go great for more than about 2-3 weeks. Some exhibit issues imediately after flashing a new kernel...other times I have started having issues 2-3 weeks later.

UPDATE

So the issue remains.

I did figure out that the clocks and such may have been associated with Launcher Pro's "keep in memory" function. Turned that off and that issue seems to be resolved.

Randomness of notifications etc changing appears to have something to do with the sd card and usb power (i think....) On my drive in this morning the sd card was unmounted and I could not access music or apps on the sd card.

Add another variable...this is in a new car we bought Friday..pretty sure it's the same cable I had used friday morning and prior in the old vehicle ...but now when plugging in the phone unmounts the sd card.

realistically there appear to be multiple issues at hand here...the fact that all were triggered at the same time may be mere coincidence

end resolution....factory reset and start from scratch

so many of my apps have received updates in the last 62 hours, bought the new car (possible voltage increase?), new market app, bad cache etc...

there are just too many things to troubleshoot the week of Christmas. I think I will just wipe everything and start rebuild one app at a time and look for the catalyst (if there is one)

You know, since you bring all this up, I was having some very weird issues with my phone that all started around the same time. I was trying out the new ziggy471 kernels from about a week ago. I found they were unstable, so I did a nandroid restore back to right before I flashed any of them. At that point, I started having a bunch of weird issues, but they were different than yours.

I noticed that gmail would randomly refuse to sync, which I know is a semi-common issue. But it would generally happen at random, and when it did, it wouldn't sync ANYTHING. Also, my tasker location profiles refused to switch. I could go way outside a location, into another one, and the old location would still be active, and refuse to exit. Also, weather (using beautiful widgets) wouldn't update at random. I know these seem to be different issues, but they stopped when I restored a nandroid backup from about a week prior. The difference - a bunch of app updates. Specifically - all the recent google apps updates. I'm not blaming them specifically, but I haven't updated gmail, etc. since, and my phone hasn't skipped a beat.

@Mr. Ed
You might want to try formatting your Sd card while you are at it... Thats what solved my problem.

I think my phone is jacked :(

everything is working better as a whole but there are some strange issues going on after the wipe and reinstall that I am still troubleshooting.

Have you been to find the cause yet? Maybe the new SBC kernel you flashed will help :D

flashed the new kernel and the kernel itself is pretty good. doesn't seem to multi task well tho

pretty much have all of the kinks worked out recovering from the mass issues.

two remain....new market keeps reinstalling itself

when connected to power in either of our cars, with any of my multiple usb cables the phone goes into usb mode, can not change it, and nothing on the sd card is accessible :(

it appears that this only occurs when in the car. when connected to a computer I still have the option to change the connection mode.

I didn't start having the issue until the new market installed. I un install market updates and I can see my sd storage music etc then by the time I start to play a song the new market is there again and sd storage is unavailable :(

it's done this on any kernel I try.

Looks like doubletwist was enablong usb mode and sd card was not accessible any time a charger was connected to the phone. Uninstalled doubletwist!

As.for kernels postex above....they really didnt work for me. First charge i did see a difference...charges after that were no different than normal and battery drained more quickly during use. Now on ziggy
