Want to root my phone, want to know the risks first

Hi, sorry for the question. I'm sure you here it all of the time. I would like to root my Sprint HTC Hero phone (firmware 2.1-update1, software 2.32.651.1), the main reason is to get access to the CLI and get rid of the Sprint apps and Amazon MP3 app that I'll never use and that eat up the bandwidth. The firmware update I did myself and was pretty straight forward. However, I've been reading the threads here for the last few weeks, and still feel a bit overwhelmed. I do have a Linux background and have been using it in some form or another for the last 10 years, however I'm not sure where to start. Also, this is my only phone so I see that some of the features, like voicemail, get turned off once the phone gets rooted. If someone can point me in the right direction and make more recommendations, that would be awesome. thanks

Hey Man - If you Just want to root - 3 options.
Z4root - on XDA -
Universal Androot
SuperOne Click

All three will root and you can get rid of bloatware....
Won't affect you VVM or any other features....

If you flash a custom Rom - You just need to also Flash Gapps and Sprint VVM....

Lots here to help!

After you are rooted, download rom manager from the market

Flash ClockworkMod recovery

Make a nandroid

I have a EVO and I need to unroot it but when I download the Ruu I cant open it, I get an error, and I really need to return it to stock

Wrong section Bro, this is for the Hero ;)

As Don said, this thread is for the HTC Hero (Sprint), which involves a different process (and files) to root and unroot. If you post your question HERE, the folks with EVOs will be happy to help... :)

I can tell you one (minor) risk of rooting your Hero, and that is once you change your stock recovery image (to, say Clockwork etc), its at this point almost impossible to go back to the stock ROM AND manage to push back the original recovery, for the following reasons:

A) Ok, so you're rooted. Maybe you're running CM6 or AOSP. Pushing the stock recovery back to your phone isn't a problem at this point, but what are you going to do about the current ROM you're running? (stock recovery mode doesn't allow you to flash ROMS)

B) Now you've flashed back to the original stock ROM. It'd be great to put your original recovery back on too, problem is you aren't rooted anymore - how do you do that?

C) You try a recovery flasher app, only to find that the latest build of your stock ROM has a patch that prevents it from working. If putting everything COMPLETELY back to factory is for some reason important to you, you're screwed!

Unless someone can tell me a way around this. I would much appreciate it myself, its just good FYI in case I need to take it into Sprint. Otherwise, I would hope they don't see my custom recovery mode, it would be a dead giveaway and warranty violation.

Once you root your phone, then you use CWM or RA to create a recovery image and then make a back up, and then you either stay rooted with stock or flash a ROM, once you decide you want to go back to your stock rooted ROM, then if you decide you want your phone back to it's original state, then the recovery image will no longer be an issue, because you will either unroot your phone from ABD, or using one of the methods you used to root your phone, and hence the recovery image is no longer an issue. also any ROM you have on your SD card can simply be removed IMO. ;)

Excellent, thanks for the info. I have been away for a bit, I'm currently moving, however I'm still doing some reading here. BTW, I've seen these one click apps on Lifehacker for rooting and may go back thru that website to get more info. thanks
