Help Is Google Voice using my Verizon munutes!?

elguapo

Newbie
So, I was under the assumption that GV did not use any of my precious VZW minutes, I think i'm wrong. After an reviewing an expensive bill, I've realized that I am using my VZW minutes to make GV calls!

Why was I under the assumption that my calls were data VOIP calls under GV (aside from the fact that i'm a moron)?

Am I missing something or is there a way I can make my GV calls data calls?

Google Voice DOES use your minutes UNLESS you have the 1400 minute plan. At that point you get 10 "Friends and Family" numbers. If you make your Google Voice number one of those, any call that is made from or to that number will be free. Google Voice is not VOIP, it is not data, it's completely an OTA phone call.

Talk to Verizon and say you did not understand. Usually they will waive the huge bill or knock it down a big chunk if its your first time. But yes, what he said above too ^^

Bummer. Fortunately I caught it in time to up my minutes before the billing cycle ended, so I just had a $20 increase.

If I keep the 1400 plan, which number do I use as one of my 10 F&F, my GV number or the number it forwards to before making a call (I live in Ohio and it seems to route my outgoing GV calls to some Georgia area code).

Thanks

You actually can make calls using a 3rd service such as SipGate. There are tutorials around on the internet and it takes some playing around to get it to work, but it does work.

Add the forwarding number and make sure that routing number doesn't change.

With the latest google voice the routing number changes. You now need the older version of google voice to use the "friends and family" trick. At least that's what I've read on the net. But using a SIP app will work.
