New to root, gonna take the plunge

First off I'm a noob to android, switched from Nextel. First phone is the hero. I've been having problems with lag and freezing, so I thought rooting would help.

I'm running software version 2.31.651.7. Had issues with the update, had to get a sprint tech to factory reset.

I dl'd z4root and installed it, haven't run the root yet, got cold feet. I'm still getting versed on custom roms and such. All kind of overwelming. I just want this phone to run better.

I can unroot for warranty right?

What's a good Rom, and install method for a noob?

Sorry for the long post, I ramble when im nervous.

Any and all help is always appreciated! :o

I believe you can unroot using the z4 method, not sure though:confused: You can always run the ruu and return to stock, anytime you want.

Any rom is better than stock. I would suggest doing a little research on what kind of rom you want. AOSP roms are stock android, such as aospMod 0.9.9.2 or CM6. Or if you want to stay with Sense UI, go with LiquidSense or one of nfinite's stock roms.

I would suggest downloading Titanium Backup from the android market. You can use this application to backup certain applications or delete unwanted bloatware.

After rooting, download rom manager from the market and flash ClockworkMod recovery. It will be at the top of the rom manager application. make sure it says 'CDMA Hero'. Then, when you have successfully flashed the recovery, 'boot to recovery' and make a nandroid of your stock rom. Once that is done, you are ready to flash any rom of your liking.

Remember, make nandroids whenever you can, it may save you one day. Always wipe data, Dalvik cache and cache when you flash a new rom

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm at work so when i get home this evening ill try out that liquid sense I guess. It's stable right?
I saw you're in Ohio, I'm in Pittsburgh, so we're in the same timezone at least.
I'll jump back on here tonight when i have some playtime. :)

so, my sisters and mom have unrooted phones (all heros) -- im about to root them. (3-5 phones).. some have 2.1 and some have 1.5 or 1.6 (whatever)...

I clicked on the sticky rooting guide... appears too technical. Is there one click rooting for 1.5 and 2.1? Would you recommend Clockwork recovery as that can be installed by the ROM manager app? I am using RA 1.2 from Freshh's 1 click root.

The one click rooting apps can only be used for 2.1. You will have to upgrade the 1.5 phones to 2.1. Then, depending on the builds, you should be able to use unrevoked, androot, or z4 to root the phones.

ClockworkMod has worked fine for me, no troubles here;)

Andy not true - The UniversalAndroot can be used for 1.5 and up.

ok folks I've got the boy in his bed, with applicable Buzz Lightyear and Woody toys, and now it's daddy play time! :)

I've rooted with z4root, got the su app in tray, so I'm rooted....right?
Installed Rom Manager, and I'm flashing clockwork recovery
Anything I missed?

Also whats a good mod for a enttry level guy like myself? I sorta like sense, but I don't have to have it, also I would like to keep the Sprint VVM.
I looked at liquid sense, I guess I can start there, and branch out.

As always the help is much appreciated :)

Yes starting with LS is good to start and then you can set that up, then once done and the phone is all set up make a Nadroid and try both AOSP 9.9.2 and CM6 which are both None sense Roms but you will see a difference in speed and no lag, keep us posted

ok while I was waiting, I read about backing up any apps or contacts I want to keep with titanium backup, so I installed that.
Problem is I have no idea what to backup and what not to.
I want to keep my contacts, and messages if I can.
also read about Gapps, I assume this is google apps right?

Yes Gapps is Google apps, but I don't think they are need for LS, as for Titanium Back Up simply back up your User apps, not sure about text messages, and contacts should already be saved in Gmail so that will restore itself once you sign into Gmail

just to be on the safe side how do I:

wipe data, Dalvik cache and cache

Running a nandroid right now.

this is making me feel a little anxious if you know what I mean... :)

NP we are here, boot into recovery, ( Hold Volume Down and End key at the same time and when prompted hit the home key) then you will boot into recovery, then there you wipe Cache and Data, then scroll down to advance and click that and then wipe Davlik, then back out and reboot or flash a Rom from there

LOL - I know EXACTLY what you mean.
You won't feel completely safe until you flash your 1st Nandroid and everything is there....

boot into recovery - Phone Off - Hold Volume down and Power until the recovery screen comes up (you may have to hit home at some point)

track ball down to wipe data click it.
Let it do it thing
Track ball down to Clear Cache Partition - click it.
Track ball down to advanced - click - then to wipe Davlik Click it.

ok wiped everything, then went to install liquid sense. It's doing its thing.....

ok apply sd card update.zip?

Sweet! I think I did it!

I'm entering my gmail info now. it's deffinately reset!

OK how do I get an app install from titanium backup?

I got titanium to work finally. Whew....This wasn't so bad.

I've got a fever...and the only prescription is more cowbell...or roms... :)

Thanks guys, you've been a huge help!
