Root Would someone mind posting a guide on how to overclock the CPU with Velocity v0.4?

Thanks! I just installed adfree android to try out, but I will certainly keep this in mind. Can I use adfree android AND do the above ads script from terminal concurrently, or won't that work correctly?

The ads script is for velocity only afaik.

But I did read about, as you mentioned, the lack of the camera (so far, I hope he figures it out in the end somehow) in the current Froyo dev under construction, and that would stop me too. I like getting cool things working, but I might not want to give up on the tools I have in order to get them.

Absolutely do not do any "under construction" or Alpha/Beta ROMs, unless you would consider yourself an expert android user. I wouldn't even think about doing a ROM until it's been tested by 'normal' users and publicly released to everyone. Velocity, Raptor and Punisher were throughly tested before let out of the cage.

The simplest way to test ROMs is to make a Nandroid backup of everything. Then, you can do whatever you want to the poor thing and revert right back with Nandroid restore and the phone will be 100% like it was before you messed with it.

Thanks for that wise advice! :) I am sure once I install a custom ROM for the first time it will seem much easier, just like rooting did using Z4root.

I have been making backups since rooting, with both ClockworkMod Recovery and starting today with Titanium Backup. I also periodically fully copy both SD card partitions to a storage folder on a PC running Ubuntu 10.10. So I have that covered pretty well. If things go bad, I have more than one choice of dates to fall back to. I recently had a problem with the OEM SD card and having those backups saved me a lot of grief. They also made upgrading to my current larger SD card easy.

I'd like to say thanks again to Crash89 for the above suggestion. I installed adfree android from the Market and it seems to have made all the lag problems in Angry Birds go away. I only rarely see any sign of a brief lag now, and most of the time it plays smoothly. Now my biggest *problem* is that this game is so darned addictive!! :) But I wanted to give his suggestion "a thorough test" so that certainly justifies my having done nothing but play the game for the past 3 hours. :D

:p

One of the down sides to forums is that information evolves. Recommended procedures and advice will change over time and we rarely go back to amend advice we posted in the past. Sometimes this can make researching how to do something a bit confusing. I think I would like to try the Velocity ROM, but I am still reading threads to figure out the currently recommended way to acquire and install it.

At some point it was mentioned that it can be done from within ClockworkMod Recovery, but I see the most recent posts in the thread announcing Velocity 0.4's release have a URL to download it directly I guess. So I'll look into which way it can be done with the current version. I do like the idea of it's automatically restoring a backup when installed, so you get all your bits back in order and don't have to reinstall all the apps and such.

Thanks for the help!!

You have to download V0.4, it is not in rom manager. You can install it from Rom manager, but I prefer to boot into recovery to install.

You can either download it to your computer and then transfer it to the root of your sd card, or you can download it directly to your phone. If you download to your phone, use astro file manager, and go into preferences and enable browswer downloader. That will allow you to download zip files with the stock browser.

Just remember, always wipe data, cache, then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache when you flash any rom.

I like the Amon-Ra recovery much better.

I have read such an opinion several times here in the forum, but have yet to encounter a post detailing the differences between Amon-Ra Recovery and ClockworkMod Recovery, to explain why one might prefer Amon-Ra. Is there a thread somewhere that spells out the details?

I'll admit... I jump around a lot, but it's not because I am not happy. I've become such a pro at flashing ROMs, I can try one out and then try another, then go back all within an hour. I use AppBrain and it instantly puts all my apps back and Gmail puts all my phone numbers back, so swapping ROMS is totally painless.

So, say you have flashed a custom ROM and for whatever reason you decide you need to go back to the stock VZC rom. What steps do you take at that point to get back there? Once I have this part figured out it I'll be more willing to give Velocity a go.

Only reason I could ever see NEEDING to go back to stock is if you had to warranty exchange your phone. I did try the above and it did work. Other than warranty reasons, after using a custom ROM, you'll be spoiled and will never go back.

Another way of doing it would be to throw it in a lake (I have one at the end of my street) and get a new phone through insurance. ;)

Amon RA has wipe ext and options for formatting SD for apps2sd. Clockwork does not.

If you have ever wondered who gets 'the bad one of the bunch' when you pick a boxed item from a shelf full of them, you just met him. :p I have a life history of it.

Both my previous phone and PDA had to be replaced under warranty for "sudden death". If there is one package on the shelf of 50 identical items which has defects or missing parts, I'll end up with it every time.

So, if there were ever anyone in need of going back to stock to get their phone replaced, I'm that guy. The odds are always against me, it seems. ;)

My other thought on this issue, after reading a lot of posts where folks had problems trying to use flashed ROMs and ended up fixing the problems is that it appears the best results in the fewest attempts seem to come from 'starting from scratch' when flashing a ROM. So I don't know if going 'all the way back' to stock when one wants to start over would ever really be necessary before flashing a different ROM version, but perhaps it would provide the best odds of success. It seemed to me like those who intended to flash upward through the released versions of Velocity, for example, had the most problems with buttons not working, etc. until they completely removed their previous ROM version and then re-flashed the new version. Perhaps some files are trying to 'hide out' somewhere when attempting to overlay a new release on top of a previous custom ROM.

If nothing else, knowing things can be 'undone' lets me sleep better at night. :D

Thanks!
