4 months ago when I first got the Ally I was excited about the prospect of Froyo OTA. However since I've learned how to root & flash (sounds dirty doesn't it!! LMAO) I've managed to bring my Ally's performance up to levels that happly co-exist with my almost OCD like personality!! Most of this(not the OCD) is your fault Trident:D & I can't thank you enough. I'll post a full review on V4 in the appropriate thread in a few days. Works been kickin' my a$$ since you helped me last weekend so I haven't gotten to play as much as I wanted.

Anyway, the official LG/Verizon Froyo doesn't really interest me other than the usefulness that the DEV's may find in it. I'm waiting til you guys get the Community Froyo up & smokin'. Then I'll try that one. There's also a Community Eclaire being brewed too.

will this update allow moving apps to SD CARD? cuz more than 10 apps is essential and this phone does not allow much more than this.:confused:
 
If indeed they are planning to push 2.2 in february, they are probably sending updates to make the ally ready for it. A friend a has an original mytouch, and they pushed a pre-download to his a few weeks before pushing 2.2.
 
I'll take a shot in the dark and guess that "MR" means "Maintenance Release". I clicked on the "source" link under that photo in Trident's post up at the top, and read some of the comments on that site where he got this. Based on what they were saying, there may be some sort of prelude update which gets the Ally ready to download Froyo 2.2?

However, I can say that my son's Droid X got Froyo all in one lump (I think he said it was 87MB or something like that - it took a long time to download - like 20 minutes), so I don't know if there is anything to the idea of a prelude.

If I had the resources of this tipster, I would look back and see how the last OTA update we got around Thanksgiving was worded in their projection sheet for that time period. If it also was labeled "MR" that would clue us to what to expect on 1/17.
 
It will be cool to have it, but only because I have yet to root mine. I have given it a complete face-lift though. If the update destroys what I have done, heads will roll.
 
So far I have had "repercussions" with every OTA update we got since May (this was before I rooted). Things ranging from the sound quit working to requiring some apps to be removed and re-installed, as well as a couple apps I had to find replacements for back in November, because they became unstable after our last OTA. So don't hold your breath about having to rebuild or make changes. It is a safer bet to assume you will need to do at least 'something' to mop up afterward.

One developer I had contacted when an app went South after the last OTA told me that Google has specifically told Android OS app developers that it is going to change certain aspects of the OS over time, and so they should not expect to be able to create an app linked to certain aspects of the OS 'now' and have it work 'later' without their having to rework the code of their app accordingly.
 
Yeah, that makes sense. Oh well, there is nothing I enjoy more than spending countless hours trying to get that "look" on my phone.

I will be trying out Velocity soon though. Would it be best to wait until after the update to FROYO to try it?

Personally, I think waiting is over-rated. :D

I like Velocity 0.4 so far. :)

Gaining root access and flashing a different ROM is not that dangerous, I believe, as long as you have good directions and follow them. From what I have read on here when researching how to do all this, the Ally is a tough little beast and it is not easy to actually damage it in these procedures. If you make a mistake and render it unusable it is very likely someone on here or on the Ally IRC will help you fix it. I had some snags in my own experimentation, but came through with flying colors thanks to these good folks. :)

As far as the bloatware issue, I would place my bet on their adding in more of it, as someone in the position to make those decisions surely will think "everyone will like THIS!" just as before. They should make all of the apps they add in these updates only installed by user choice during the update process. You know, like when you UN-check the Yahoo Toolbar during a custom program installation. :D
 
I doesn't matter to me when it comes out. I'm going to wait to update to it until it's been out a bit and I see what problems it causes. And you KNOW there will be problems. It's Verizon and LG - problems are inevitable.
