Help My Htc Desire is deleting my text messages!

Hi All,

I could be getting this wrong - but I have a sneaky suspition its something to do with HTC Sense and particularly the www.htcsense.com website - As you may all know with the Desire HD and Z etc - You can register your phone with HTCSense.com and it is "Suppose" to do all sorts of neat tricks like erase/lock your phone if it gets lost etc etc

Anyway I lost all my messages literally in my sleep last night so I know its not as a result of any human error on my part - and I have checked and can confirm I did not have the ability to "Delete Messages Automatically" checked.

However when I logged into htcsense.com all (or atleast I think all) of my messages are there - but they are not appearing on the phone! - I then went onto "Accounts & Sync" on my phone and noticed that HTC Sense had gone!!! - I then noticed that none of the features on HTC Sense website effect my phone anymore i.e. I cannot lock the phone.

I re-added the HTC Sense account to my accounts & sync and it made no difference whats so ever....how very annoying

I have to say it - I love the Desire HD but the HTCSense.com although an absolutely fantastic idea - its the worst system I have seen - it dont bloody work!!!

I know many of you are awaiting response from HTC, but does anyone know if this is likely to be a persistent problem?
I am looking to move to an HTC android phone, and the Desire Z ticks all the boxes for me, apart from this issue. I will be using the phone for work at times, and it is vital that any messages received from clients are kept safe and backed up. I won't be keeping thousands at a time, but could receive over a hundred before I can back them up, so this issue is a real sticking point for me.
I look forward to hearing if HTC make any response on this issue, and if it's likely to be solved by 2.3.

[PROBLEM]

Woke up and all my messages had gone bar 3 - As the day went on my entire message screen went blank asthough I had no messages but on my "Message" icon it showed the symbol for 2 new messages.

[SOLUTION]
Go to Settings --> Accounts & Sync - Look for "HTC Sense"

If its there - Click it and click "Remove Account" - Dont worry you can re-add later and you wont lose anything.

If its not there - click "Add Account" - Then follow the steps to add the HTC Sense Account. Once you have added it - restart your phone and then go back to settings click "HTC Sense" and remove the account.

Restart your phone - all messages should be back - then if you wish Re-Add HTC Sense but I wouldnt bother its problematic at this stage.

[SUMMARY]
It seems as I said above its the HTC Sense system found on HD and Z Versions (may be on others) - It doesn't supprise me because ever since I had the HD the day it came out the www.htcsense.com website hasn't worked properly - my advice - remove the HTC Sense account from your phone as I did

I have never had anything to do with HTCSense, and yet I just looked at my accounts and sync list and its there....I have never even been on the website :(

I love this phone, but I hate that im on this forum (no offence) every 2 weeks trying to fix something.

Had my HTC Desire HD for a couple months now, and it has twice deleted all my text messages and then not been able to open my the messages app. I had to shut down remove the battery and the restart the phone.

I have read the posts and I do not have the "HTC Sense" account added but I did have "Facebook for HTC sense" added. I have now removed it and I hope the phone will not continue to delete all messages. Should it persist, I will re-post.

My Desire HD has just done this, it's made me quite angry. I had 5 messages showing on the display when I got in, I unlocked the phone and caught a glimpse of the (5) bubble over the messages.

I pressed messages, the bubble disappeared, messages loaded and it had systematically deleted every single message on there.

I've checked the messages settings, there is nothing at all set that would automatically delete messages after a certain period. Otherwise instead of a bulk deletion of everything I'd see the message threads being chopped over a period of days.

I'm really quite angry.

First it forces me to use google contacts, doesn't sync any contacts and wipes the entire lot in an OS upgrade and now it deletes all of my text messages for no reason at all. This phone is turning into FAR more hassle than it's worth and there is utterly no way I could recommend it to anyone. I want it gone.

Rwinwood's solution didnt retrieve my messages, I have had this happen to me 3 times now in as many months since I got a DHD.

I had a quick look around on the internet for advice on this and on another message board someone said it was to do with anti-virus software. This sounds plausible to me as I have an anti virus app and it has only happened since I installed it. So I am going to get rid and see if that helps. But as for the lost messages, pretty sure they are gone for good.

BTW, this is the link to the board mentioning the possible culprit. http://www.htcdesirehdforum.com/htc-desire-hd-troubleshooting/keeps-deleting-messages/

Hey, this has happened to me twice now. If it is an app, maybe we should post what apps we have and see if there's a recurring entry?

Here are mine:

2 Player Reactor
Advanced Task Killer
android-vnc-viewer
Angry Birds
Angry Birds Seasons
AppBrain App Market
ASTRO File Manager
Barcode Scanner

Hi,

No great resolution to report I'm afraid but wanted to add my experiences in. I've had a HTC Desire for about 8 months and it's been pretty good. The only strange thing was it seemed to lose SMS messages related to one contact - but I put that down to my mistake.

However, today after sending a few messages as normal, the entire lot has gone. I haven't done anything different or installed anything new for weeks. I contacted HTC and they have confirmed this as a known issue with no resolution and recommended that I use an SMS backup app (great - thanks!).

Has anyone got any ideas on where the SMS messages are actually stored as it seems from reading the thread that the data is there somewhere it just isn't being seen by the app. I'm wondering if the lost messages can be recovered from the SD card or something?

Any help appreciated.

On my Custom rom, in performance settings, I have a setting:

Lock messaging app in memory

Avoid lost messages in low memory situations

It is refering to RAM. I wonder if this is then a known issue with Android?!

So where are the SMS messages normally stored? Somewhere on the memory card? Internally in the Android system? On the SIM?

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but I've never had to look "under the hood" on this phone before.

Does anyone know how you might do an 'undelete' to recover the lost messages or are they gone forever?

Mine's the same... Desire HD which I've had for 3 weeks. I imported messages from my old phone, so I have quite a few. My Desire HD has deleted them all 3 times now. You can imagine I'm less than amused.

Anyway, here's the list of apps that I have that overlap yours, in case it helps someone...

Angry Birds
Facebook for Android
Gmail
Google Maps
Google Search

Add me to the list! Had the Desire HD since November 2010 and already had SMSs wiped twice. First time it happened was December 28. Kicking a soccer ball around. After soccer, pick up the phone, notice an SMS notification. Go to check the message and Whoops! no messages!

Second time was Jan 19 (today). Feel phone vibrate for an SMS as expected. Go to check the message and again Whoops! no messages!

Happened to me twice now in the last 6 months (HTC Desire)

The 'Delete Old Messages' has been unticked from day 1.

The first time it happened had just a had a conversation go over 1000 messages, and guess what.. the same this time. Went to 1006 yesterday and today they are all gone, not just the conversion the whole lot.

The phone has been slowing down noticeably over the past couple of days, just going into the messages screen. Cant help thinking it just cant handle the conversations getting that high.

Going to make sure i keep my messages at low levels and see if that makes a difference

Going to give it one more chance but seriously thinking about getting rid and buying a iphone!

Just happened to me with my HTC Desire-Z. Messages gone. When I try to send a text message it simple says saved to drafts.

Not impressed.

Hi,

I got my HTC Desire HD just before Xmas, all good until I too lost all my text messages last week - thought it must have been something I'd pressed!! Also had a problem where message at top of screen for unsent text message, takes you to "compose message" and the timer wheel just goes round and round and zzzzz.

After looking on this site, I contacted HTC on 08458900079 - very helpful both issues known to them and they are issuing "within next couple of days" a hotfix which is being sent to all HTC Desire HD IMEI's for customers to download.

Worth contacting them to ensure your details are with logged!!

My HTC Desire Z lost all its messages today. Old ones and the ones that I hadnt read.
Realy great... should I go back to Nokia?

Happened the 2nd x today. Very annoyed called HTC they said that they were not aware of this problem nor of other user having this kind of proplem. They think this problems caused by the user himself. Idiots! I suggest that more.ppl having this proble to call htc

Well what do you know, having had the same thing happen to me overnight, and having read this thread I phoned HTC (on hold at this moment) who informed me that they have NO records of this error being logged. Honestly, the frustration is palpable.

Oh, and I also attempted to use the email via the website to no avail.

Have just go off the phone. I was informed that the technicians are currently working on a fix, that they received another similar complaint earlier this morning. Will let you know when they send me more information - which he said he would do. We'll see.

Hi All

I had exactly the same thing happen to me with my Desire HD. I uninstalled AVG Antivirus software app and the Advanced Task Killer app, restarted the phone etc. I managed to get back some lost SMS messages but not all. I can now also send messages again as this was not happening before.

I recommend doing this to see if it is either of those apps.

Good luck

Hi all- registered to say this:

My girlfriends desire HD did this (today). I followed the advice earlier and removed the HTC sense account from the phone and restarted it.

That didn't solve anything, but I then re-added the account (and set it to sync again). Shortly afterwards all her messages were stll gone, but about ten minutes (and one pizza) later I picked up the phone again with the intention of performing a hard reset and miraculously all her texts were back.

Options wise:

Sync HTC Sense (ticked)
Sync HTC Hub (unticked)
Update when opened (ticked)
Update schedude: "As items change (Push)"

My best guess is that HTC sense does indeed do the magical backing up it claims to, and it just took a short while to actually do it.

So, if you did choose to set up HTC Sense then it might be worth a punt. Good luck!
