Root Rooting the Huawei Ascend for Cricket users!

Edit: NOTE: This is a FABULOUS TUTORIAL on how to ROOT your phone! I had NO idea when I created this thread that it would evolve into such a great instruction thread.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today is the day I chose to root my Huawei Ascend. I have Cricket and this is what has happened so far:
In preparation I pre-registered for the XDA-Developers site so that I would be able to download the z4root.1.3.0.apk file.
Also, I turned on my USB debugging and set applications to allow unknown sources.
I downloaded Titanium Backup and Root Explorer from the Market and felt I was 'good to go'.
NOT SO!!! LOL
When I went to the XDA site and downloaded the file it said the install was unsuccessful and this is the message I got:
<Unknown>
forum.xda-developers.com
Cannot download. The content is not supported on this phone.
Sigggggghhhhhh!!!
So I posted in a couple of places here for help and then PMed Joser, who has been tremendous help to me.
He suggested I download Dolphin Mini Browser from the market and use that to download it.
It worked!
It asked me if I wanted to 'save the file' and I clicked yes and it downloaded and gave me the 'download was successful' message.
Now the problem I have is I can't find it anywhere on my phone!!!!
So....these are some of the things I have experienced in my attempts to root my Cricket Ascend. I thought that a thread with my trials and tribulations would be a good thing to have for other Cricket Ascend users who are trying to root their phones. (and don't know anything I might add LOL)
So now Joser is helping me. :)
So what do I do now?
:confused:
Okay...Joser said to do the following:
"Go to file manager in the app drawer and go to your sd card icon and go to the dolphin browser mini folder. You will find it there."
I did this and there it was.
I installed it and then opened it.
It asked if I wanted to do a Permanent or Temporary root and I selected Permanent based on other's recommendations.
So now my phone is in FATE's hands.
LOL
It turn off shortly after I began the rooting process. I plugged it into the charger just to make sure the battery doesn't go out.
Now I'm waiting.....
More soon. :)
Any suggestions on how to get My Laptop (Windows XP) to recognize my Huawei M860 Ascend Android via USB? I have been trying to get tethering to work for 3 days now. It looks like I need the USB Driver for that particular phone (Not Samaung, Not Motorola and not LG... But Huawei)
Okay....now it says that my phone is rooted! YAY!!!!
So next I start Titanium Backup. :)
Uh oh....it says it doesn't have access!
Does this mean I have to buy the Pro version for it to work?
Anyone know?
On your wall charger see if you can remove the cord and use it as a USB. I can with mine.
*Disregard! I didn't see that you said 'driver'. :)
When you first plugged in your ascend to the pc, you should have gotten a popup with 3 icons, one of them to install the drivers. Did you install the drivers?
No, it says that but it does have access. When you opened titanium, did a black popup with a skull come out and did you click Allow?
It popped up really quick and then went away. I have the app with the skull if you are referring to Superuser. I think it said something about Busybox and I can't find that anywhere.
...Okay! I opened up Titaniums again and clicked on problems. It said it could download a version of Busybox and I gave it permission.
It failed! :(
Jazziette, just in case you didn't know, titanium is not needed for root. Titanium is for uninstalling bloatware like UNO
Yes, I see those 3 options and opt to install drivers, but when I try to run the tether software, it would still say "A network cable is unplugged". I unplugged and replugged the USB connector, enabled UBS bugging on my phone, and get the same results everytime. The tether app actually says that I need to install the USB driver. Is there some other USB driver besides the one that pops up when I first plug in the phone?
Okay. Well it didn't work anyway. I thought Busybox was going to be installed with the Z4root app. But it apparently wasn't.
I want to remove some bloatware. That's why I rooted. LOL
Thanks!!! :D
It seems like when I install the driver from the 3 options, that the installation is temporary as it goes away every time that I unplug the usb. Shouldnt there be some other driver that has to be permanently downloaded onto my laptop? Is there some Huawei website that I should refer to or something?
Busybox IS installed but within titanium, so u wont see it in your apps. Go ahead and use Titanium, even if it says any errors.
When you received the first popup after opening titanium, did you click allow before the popup disappeared?
Which app are you using? Respond in a new thread please.
Okay...I had to click the download busybox again and this time it was successful. So now I'm going to uninstall some apps.
Did you get rid of Uno and Midnight Bowling? What about Photobucket? Is that really necessary?
Not sure how to start a new thread. Dont use live chat too often- sorry. Anyway, i am trying to use a program simply called tether (tether.com). It is supposed to be specifically for Androids and/or BBs.
So the app is not an app for your phone, it is a computer program?
I do not know whats going on. I suggest a wireless tethering app called Barnacle from the Market. It works!
Thank you Joser!!! You're the best!
Now to go spend some time with my boyfriend. He's been very patient with me since I got my phone. LOL
I sent you a friend request! You will be my first friend here if you accept.
Isn't that ironical? LOL :D
Already paid $29.99 for this app.! Their tech support got back to me once but it takes 2 days to get a response for every question. Unfortunately, their tech support live chat is "down" due to the holidays. Go figure... New year's was over a week ago and they are still on holiday. I'm sooooo frustrated.
Download Barnacle from Market. When you open it, before you press start, go to settings and check Skip WEP Supplicant. Then you can start.
