Help battery goes down to 89% only half an hour after being charged?

tomothy94

Newbie
i have had the desire for only about a week now, and i love it. i got over the battery issue, as i have an ipod touch and am used to charging every night - however a problem has arisen, that didn't happen before today. this morning when i took it off charge, it was at a hundred percent, as it should be - and then half an hour later in class, it was down to 89%. i had not used the phone during this time. thinking nothing of it, i got home and charged it again, back to 100 percent - then left for the cinema, unplugging it just before i left (it had been charging for about 3 hours then). then when i got in the car, about 15 minutes later, it had once again depleted straight down to 89 percent - and i have no idea why :( after this drop, the phone loses battery as before, which is at a much slower pace. can anybody help me fix this? i have before tried to elongate the battery life using the '8 hours, one hour off, one hour on' method. could this have broken my battery somehow? any help would be appreciated. thankyou. :(

have you looked at turning every thing off on the phone like gps 3g and auto update moving wallpaper

i have changed everything to be as power saving as possible :/ the fact is, it was fine until yesterday - i don't know what's happened to make it drop ten percent then act as normal.

the phone charges to 100% but as trickle charge is old hat, the new thing to do is if its been at 100% for 2 hours, is to rapidly deplete the battery to 90%. Then when it hits 100% again, 2 hours later it will drop to 90 again.

You can unplug it then recharge to 100% (should take 10-15 minutes) to be sure of a full charge.

Otherwise, its luck of the draw.

What's the sense of turning off "every thing" to save power? It becomes a dumb phone then.

The issue sounds like battery calibration where the phone thinks the battery is not fully charged. Try this procedure from HTC:

To also help with Battery Life you can do these steps exactly: 1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more 2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour 3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, we have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well.

Make sure you DON'T unplug the phone if the light turns green, just follow the steps above EXACTLY to reset the calibration for the battery. For some reason many Desires are not calibrated from the factory. Mine was fine, but someone I know had a problem with battery life and this fixed it for them permanently.

Luck of the draw? Odd that my phone does nothing like that. When I plug it in overnight, it's fully charged 100% the next morning, EVERY TIME. I've never seen it show less than 100% when unplugged after a full charge. And if I charge before bed, once it's charged it sits for 8 hours overnight with bluetooth and wifi off, but everything else on and it's still at 97% the next morning.

89% after an hour and a half? Dude, don't boast.

i said half an hour :/

also, i have tried the HTC calibration trick previously, i will try it again tomorrow to see if it helps

thanks guys, i hope i can fix it. if not i will be going to the orange shop and demanding a new battery.

mine always displays 100% after charging too, but this doesn't mean it is actually at 100%. If i use it for a few minutes it will drop to the real level. It's a feature to prevent overheating afaik.

Not mine, after a full charge, I can use it for half an hour before it drops a few points.

The phone just does this. Because of the prior said trickle down and recharge. Even if you start from 90% at start of day you should be okay.

Well obviously its not everytime, but I'm not making it up. It's built in to all the stock HTC desire roms. Use system panel and check for yourself.

Just to clarify things - Do not take it back. It isn't broken. Trickle charging isn't good for Li-Ion batteries, so the phone charges to 100%, stops charging till the battery drops to 90%, then starts charging again. If you happen to unplug it at a low point in that cycle it can seem like the battery drops very fast early on. As mentioned earlier, simply unplugging it and plugging it back in for a few minutes will ensure it is fully charged if you need the extra few percent.

are you charging with the device turned off?
i get results like these with the device off but if i full charge overnight it drops to about 92% in an hour. some times i take it off charge and its at 95% saying full. this is by design

I never turn off my phone, it's charged when on and usually before going to sleep I take it off charge. When I charge overnight, it's at 100% when I take it off charge, and it remains at 100% for a couple of hours if I don't use it. After a couple of hours, the battery info (*#*#4636#*#*) will show it's dropped to 98%.

When the phone is fully charged, and it's still on the charge cable and I use the phone, the battery info still shows 100% until after I take it off the charger. From what I can see, as long as the phone is on the charger, it doesn't use the battery at all for usage until it's removed from the charger. That is typical for Li-Ion battery and charge circuits - the battery's microchip cuts the flow of charge current when the battery hits 100%, but the charger still supplies power to the phone while the battery is no longer charging, but the phone is not using the battery's power since it's getting power from the charger.

I keep reading about how the battery goes up and down after a full charge, but I've never noticed this even when I looked for it deliberately. So I can't agree with this unusual and non-typical "design" concept.

What good is the battery info (*#*#4636#*#*) if it doesn't show actual level of charge? When mine is fully charged it shows 100%. When I take it off the charger, make a brief phone call, it will drop to 97-98%. But if I don't use it after taking it off the charger, it remains at 100% for a couple of hours before showing any kind of drop.

Make sure you follow the calibration procedure EXACTLY. Don't change or skip any of the steps at all. For it to work, you must follow the procedure exactly, even if the phone shows a green light early, don't change the procedure - do what it says EXACTLY then report your results.

I'm stressing the exactness of the procedure because many times I've read that people take it off charge early because the light is green and they don't follow the steps properly, and then complain it doesn't work. You must follow every single step exactly and wait the times the procedure states.
:)

you must have a phantom device,
its been proven and shown in xda developers that the kernel has a section regarding how it handles battery charging and by default it will charge to full and then the android system itself will keep a full flag even when there is no more charge to let the battery drain to between 90&95% this is by design and when it gets to a certain level it triggers a top up charge back to 100.
you must be really lucky and catching it just after the top up charge.
also bare in mind it doesnt intentionally drop the charge, it does it as normal so if you have all the battery sapping stuff of you wont lose much more than 1/2% iver night while its plugged in anyway

[BATT Fix] Get your phone charged to 100% when you pick it up in the morning :) - xda-developers

something smart you wrote in post #6

im not happy with my battery life and tryed to do that other calibration method were there's 7 or 8 steps to do if you know what im talking about ( but mine LED didnt turn brown in anyway :) ).
messed my battery up a bit, 100% was lasting about 4hours with 2g/3g on, youtube, music, games.
then it started to drop normaly i guess, played with it almost all the time, it lasted for about 24h before it came to 21-20% and just turned it self off.
next full charge lasted me about 12-13 hours with less usage then before, and its like that for few days.

im on stock froyo, branded to my gsm provider tho no apps or anything else from them, radio version 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27

ill try what you wrote, just plugged it in with 30% left.. will report soon with more data :)

Well if it shows that in the firmware code, then it must do it. However, my personal experience has shown that it never does it, either by design or by luck of the draw, or an anomaly in the time-space continuum.
:)
I've had the phone over 5 months and it's always been like this. I've never noticed it showing less than 100% when fully charged, whether on the charger or not.

I don't have all the battery sapping stuff turned off, except for bluetooth and wifi. Everything else is set to default with 3G, mobile data, background updates settings enabled, live wallpaper, SMS time fix services running, etc. Overnight it drops about 3 points to 97% in standby mode off the charger. I experience the same during the day if I take it off charge in the morning and don't make any calls. I always have a few texts, but once in a while I have a quiet day and in the 7-8 hours during the day my battery drops a few percent, so by evening it's around 95%. Those are the days my battery doesn't get a charge and it lasts 2 full days. Today is like one of those days - my phone has been running 22h 7m 12s since the last charge and battery is at 87%. I've done a few texts, brief browsing, Maps, and a 1m 38sec phone call from my wife about stopping for food on the way home. On a busy day, my battery is down to 20-30% after an overnight charge with calls, browsing, texting, etc.

Anywho, regardless of how the charging system works, I too would consider something is wrong if the battery drops 11% in half an hour or less. I've never experienced such a drop and think it's odd.

Ah hang on. I think there be some confusion.

The design is that after 2h of 100% it drops 10% in about as many minutes. Then recharges to 100% and repeats.

This means when you take it off charge it shows anything as low as 90% depending on when in this cycle the phone is unplugged.

For me, it sometimes delayed showing me that true % by a couple of seconds. Personally I believe that is either a bug or oversight. I can't say I saw a delay everytime.

However some people have seen longer delays, which more than likely is a bug.

If you plot the battery with system panel in charge, you can see this

well i too noticed that charge/discharge stuff, only 1 or 2 times by 10%, and the rest was like 1%.
Installed juiceplotter yesterday, and while my phone was connected to charger overnight, juice plotter showed 1% drop and then up again.

im now on the last step of that 8hour or more calibration thing, and altho LED is green, my AC charger is warm and i guess its doing something ^^

Maybe newer roms have changed by how much it drops by then?
