Root ROOTING For Dummies

First let me say THANK YOU to everyone here; I was initially terrified to try and root my phone, but this thread gave me enough confidence to try it.

AND GUESS WHAT? I was able to root without bricking my phone! :D

But I have a couple issues or errors or...something. I'll try to post more later after my key for Titanium comes through (couldn't purchase it from the Marketplace for some reason).

But I did want to ask if there were any other guides for newbs on how to use SetCPU? The original post has a link (http://www.pokedev.com/setcpu/) but it's currently not working.
 
While unrevoked is running the root, does it notify you of completion? At the bottom of the window it says "Running root.." Below that it says, "Recovery image: ClockworkMod Recovery" Is it done or not??

I have done every single step and successfully rooted, and already preformed a nand backup!!!
My question is that when i open c:\evo-recovery\adb-windows shell to check if im rooted it gives me the $ symbol (indicates that I'm not rooted).

I Just got my phone 2 days ago and still have the latest stock from sprint. Is that the reason why it shows that haven't rooted yet??

It's not done. When it's fully done, unrevoked will say "Done" in the message space at the bottom of the window.

Mine only stayed at "running root" for a second or two, though. If it's stuck there, maybe something's wrong. What state is the phone in?

Keep in mind that you can't overclock unless you use a custom kernel other than HTC. You can still use it with HTC kernels, but you can only underclock and raise the minimum (you still have to disable perflock). This guide should help you do all that.
 
Phone is in normal state as everything else during the process has run accordingly. Anitvirus is off. Still stuck on that screen. Should I close out of the process or leave it running...

3) Verify your wimax version before and after the update

None of those things are dependent on wimax_mtd passing everything (though, mac address and version may not all show if it doesn't pass at least some stuff). I haven't been able to prove any correlation between wimax_mtd failing and 4g not working yet, though, because of the high failure rate of wimax_mtd. It all seems so coincidental. Maybe we should find a better way of extracting wimax version and mac address, and drop the whole wimax_mtd thing all together until we can all understand it better. I'd hate to confuse people even more. I know it's possible. I just don't remember the commands off hand.

What would you recommend for checking 4G if the command "grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0" returns "grep: not found"?

Task manager doesn't indicate any problems either. This problem wouldn't be linked to signal would it?

Based on my experience rooting my phone, I would first suspect the communication drivers. I'm certainly no expert though, so I'm not sure if it's safe to kill it and start over.

Well, for future reference, it is safe to close out and try again. I got brave and tried it. It now says, "Done." I was getting nervous. Thanks for the quick responses.

No, it won't show up in the app list. Open the terminal emulator, and just type busybox, then enter. If it's installed, that will give you a list of commands and some info. Otherwise, it will just say the same "not found" message.

Got "not found". I guess it didn't install successfully with Ti backup? Yet Ti works fine. If I install the version from the market, will that break Ti?
 
Now thats really weird!
I roother with unrevoked 3 and i got the S-off.
but in Terminal Emulator it sais permission denied and gives me the $....
HELP?

See if terminal emulator is listed in the superuser permissions list. It should have notified you when typing "su" in the emulator, but it's worth a check.

Have you tried using any other apps that require root access, like wireless tether or Ti backup?

Yes its listed there and it did ask me it when i typed su... but still get this $.

I'd say you have to have busybox installed if titanium backup is working. Two things:

1) What terminal emulator are you using?
2) From the command line type "echo $PATH" and let me know what the output is.
