Root Touchwiz deleted by root n00b

Frisco

=Luceat Lux Vestra=
A friend took my advice and rooted his Fascinate, but he thought he was supposed to remove in root file manager all the launchers he wasn't using, so he took out Touchwiz and now FCs are all over the place to the point that his device is useless.

We just tried the Odin app recovery method and FCs still come up right away as the device is booting.. impossible to continue into a home screen.

This specific issue us new to me, and I'm wondering how to remedy this for him (he's not yet blaming me for his troubles at least :D).

To remove tw you have to have another launcher in the system first. Have you tried:

http://androidforums.com/fascinate-all-things-root/238460-di01-odin-fix-all.html

I don't know for sure this will fix it but...

My bad I didn't even look that it was you frisco... You know more than me. Have you tried irc to talk to adryn? Or others

i would say the dio1 should fix it all the way back to stock dio1....it replaces the system/recovery/kernel et all...so just loosing tw launcher shouldnt be an issue

What's puzzling me is that he had ADW running, fine, but went into root file manager and tore out TWZ, then the FCs came along and made the device useless.

I did the Odin app replacement, thinking TWZ would be part of that, but it wasn't, so now he's got himself a nice brick. :D

I'll keep brainstorming.

yeah after running the dio1 all in one...try wiping data and cache in stock recovery twice...then rebooting...then factory reset in settings..reboot

might fix it

Yea just cuz adw was running doesn't make a difference adw would have to be moved to system/data. But anyways I would try pushing odin fix all again. I really think it should work

I ran it again, no go.

After it finished "successfully," I put the battery in and powered up. I counted eleven different FC messages, googe this and that, TWZ this and that, etc.

This guy wrecked his system good.

Oh yes, always as a first step.

But now I can report success; I noticed that the FCs were getting fewer with each attempt. So, logical soul that I tend to be, I figured multiple wipes and Odin flashes would do it, and it did: fifth run-through.

He now has a stock (boring) Fascinate again, and he's happy.

I told him to go out and run my snow blower for a while (several inches of snow has come down as I've been working on his phone). :D

So, I get my drive and walks done, no sweat.

Thank you all for your responses.. it's felt strange being on this end of a trouble thread. :D

Glad it worked out....just strange that it took so many wipes/odins to fix...,usually the problem with force close help is that everyone forgets to wipe in recovery....but either way its a success for your friend

I know the feeling ;). If he decides to remount the horse just make sure he has he adw launcher in system/app before ditching his tw

I wrote down a few things for him, including that, plus the obvious tutorial on ROM Manager and backup/restore.

"I'll never root again," was his response as he looked over my list.

Even though I thought he was giving up too soon, I did find myself remembering a frustrating day of trying to teach my youngest kid to drive a stick shift, "thank you," I thought as she declared her love for mom's car with the automatic. :D

The only time I've seen that package take a few tries is with Voodoo. This one has me totally stumped. Shouldn't even have needed the shotgun-approach all in one, the system file should have taken care of it easily. Go figure...

Yeah after my first droid x sbf scare....i remember saying id never root.again....but a day later when i calmed down and started to actually read up on things (i was among those who just used to jump into stuff without knowing what it does/is)....i kinda started to get it and gain confidence......suffice to say i rerooted and haven't looked back. :)
