Help rooting 2.1-update 1

bigeagle

Newbie
I'd appreciate any help pointing me in the right direction for info on how to root this Hero. I rooted my EVO using Unrevoked but am having trouble with the Hero. It was given to me with the 2.1-update 1 Firmware. Software 2.31.651.7. Unrevoked doesn't work and another one-click method I tried didn't work either. It seems the Firmware or Software version may be the problem.

Any tips?

have you tried using Z4root? thats fairly easy and quick to do.

As Voodoochild mentioned on that build you can use Z4Root from the market, and if you prefer another way that you can downgrade the RUU to .5 and also root from there, but Z4Root should do the trick.

Ok a scared noob here. Once i download z4root to desktop can you please walk me throught he steps to root my sprint hero :)
Thanks a million

There are no steps, simply installed Z4Root, then click root and follow instructions and wait, if you see it hangs after 15 minutes then simply pull the battery out and reboot and once up and running, check the app drawer and see if you have the Superuser app., let us know if you have an issue, someone here will help ;)

i just rooted my phone using the super one click method and it was fast and easy. my phone feels like a completely new phone now without all the Sprint junk. the only thing it kept was Sprint Navigator which i'm happy with. i also flashed the ROM with the Aloyisious ROM flash and it's awesome!

Ok dont laugh at me but how do i get the z4root from my desktop onto my phone, there are several folders that were extracted into the file :)

I keep reading (google) that i need to install
How to Non-Market .Apk Application on Google Android G1 Phone

Mount your phone to your PC, then drag a drop the APK to the root of your SD card, and then unmount, then use App Installer from the market to install, make sure you have unknown source check marked to be able to install the app. you can get the App installer from the market ;)

android manifest - next to paper icon
classes - next to paper icon
lib -next to folder icon
meta-inf -next to folder icon

Now i want to get rid of all sprint bloatware and cant figure out how to do it or do you reccomend just investigating (cry cry) flash rom's

I don't feel confident that this ROM will be your daily runner just yet. I need beta testers to help me spot any issues, since this is the first time I'm dealing with a non Zen-based Kernel. If you're comfortable with helping me test, please give it a shot! All functions are working, I can guarentee that. I simply haven't had enough time to fully test/use it for a full day like I have for 2.1.

Should I be concerned about the above message from the link you gave :)

What rom do you use :)
once again thanks for all your help

I myself prefer Non Sense Roms, so I use AOSP 9.9.2 which is very stable and you can set it up to look just like Sense if you want. And yes using the one I gave you is stable, once you have a backup there is no worries you can always flash back with no issues. Try Liquidsense and then you can try the one I use, CM6 is also good, not as quick but stable with the nightlies they release ;)

Instructions:
Ready? Here we go! Veteran users probably won't need to read all of the steps.

Step 1: Power off your phone.
Step 2: Press and hold volume down while powering on the phone to get to Recovery..
Step 3: Please please please nandroid!
Step 4: Mount USB Storage (while in recovery)
Step 5: Download and put the ROM on your memory card: ROM
Step 6: Download put the following kernel on your memory card: Deca's #43 Kernel Note: This is the CFS version, the Brainfuct version has too much instability with the GPS for my liking.
Step 6: Wipe/Factory Reset (I strongly suggest this)
Step 7: Flash the ROM you downloaded.
Step 8: Without leaving the recovery menu, proceed to flash the kernel as well.
Step 9: Reboot, setup, and enjoy.

Step 4: how do i mount storage while in recovery... i tried plugging usb in and it did not show up under computer where i see harddrives ????
