Help Best recommendations for Huawei Ascend w/ android?

Papamalo

Android Enthusiast
New guy here, finally my cell phone knowledge will have to become as proficient as my computer skills. I have only had low-end cell phones, and i am looking forward to tricking out my Huawei Ascend running Android on Metro PCS.

I have a few question!

1: what is the best way to root my ascend. are there free apps that do this, or is it a pay service?

2: I want to get rid of 80% of all the bloatware on this phone. how do I do that?

3: I'd like to use my OWN ring tones, and notification tones. is there a way to do this?

thanks! I am glad you guys are here!

1) Easiest way to root your Huawei Ascend is to use Z4ROOT. Located below.

Rooting Tools | Android News and Updates, Android Guides, and More!

2) Here is what is OK to delete from your MetroPCS Huawei Ascend

1 Boingo Wifi
2 MetroPCS Easy Wifi
3 Uno
4 Virtual Card
5 Documents To Go
6 Pocket Express
7 Games ( Not Really Games )
8 Online Banking
9 Loopt

DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING GOOGLE RELATED

3) You could use a site like Ringtones, MP3s, Wallpapers, Videos and more from Myxer.com to upload any mp3 file from your computer and cut out a part of the song you like as a ring tone. You will see how to cut the part out once you select a .mp3 to use.

That's troubling. since Z4root is no longer a part of android market, I have to get it from the link you specified.

however, my computer running windows 7 refuses see my Huawei Ascend on any of the USB ports it has, and an update of Huawei drivers didn't make my computer see the Ascend either.

any ideas?

thanks!

On your phone, go to settings, applications, development, and check USB Debugging. Go back and click to enable non-market content.Try downloading directly from your phone. But do not use the stock Browser, look for Dolphin Browser in Market, and use that. To locate the file after download succesful, go to File Manager in your app drawer, click the SD card icon on the top right, and click on the dolphin browser mini folder. You will find it there.

Do what he said to learn how to get your computer to recognize your phone, but if you want z4root NOW, then go to the link below directly from your phone's browser, it does not matter what browser you use. Just make sure you have your phone set to allow non-market content like joser116 said.

Actually it does matter because many users are reporting problems downloading with the stock Browser. Dolphin solved the problem. I recently helped Jazziette with that problem.

I have no problem downloading .apk's from dropbox from my default browser, nor have I had any problem downloading anything from the stock brwoser

Read my post carefully. I never said all users. I said many, meaning not all. You can ask Jazziette

I am not saying your lying man, I am just saying, if he simply wants z4root, he can download it from my dropbox without changing browsers, once he is rooted, he can do w/e he wants.

as far as ringtones you can dl ringdroid from the market, it lets you cut out a piece from a song on yor phone.....
for the computer, i have to go thru two steps, the first tell me to run pc options and then i can do file transfer. my old phone just went straight to file transfer.

Ringtones, MP3s, Wallpapers, Videos and more from Myxer.com is a awesome website for uploading any mp3 you want from your computer, and cutting out a part you want and send it to your phone as a ringtone for free.

Also, Zedge is pretty cool too, FREE from Market

downloaded dolphin, Z4root, titanium backup, and boot animations installer apps.

I have everything I want except for one last thing.
I want to change the bootup sound, from the standard metro PCS sound, to a sound I recorded in my studio.
I have already converted it to an ogg (android sound file) and it's in my downloads folder.

Now, how do I overwrite the metro PCS sound, in the system/media/audio/ui folder with my own?
I have already named it bootStrapSound.ogg. I just need to overwrite the one currently there.
how do I move/copy/paste files around to different folders?

thanks!
you guys rock for helping me!

I now have the perfect startup animation, and bootup audio clip that makes it sound like a computer asking for voice authentication.

thanks!

Zedge is a ringtone app, has lots of songs and stuff to sift through, personally I like the "RingTone" app better

Zedge is just the first app I downloaded and I rarely ever use it now. I'll give RingTone a shot! Thanks Trey!!! :) Zedge does have some cool wallpapers, however.
