Root Firebird 2v0.5

I was following a tutorial on the team whiskey forums on how to flash a kernel. the instructions were:

1. Put the ROM/Kernel/etc. on the root of your SD Card
2. Assuming you already have ClockWorkMod Recovery, boot into it.
3. Click "Install ZIP from SD Card"
4. Click "Choose ZIP from SD Card"
5. Navigate to your ZIP file and click the Power Button
6. Let it do its thing.

So I downloaded Firebird 2v0.5 and copied the zip file to my internal SD card and ran Rom Manager to reboot into recovery. I followed the steps above and everything went fine, I even have the Firebird 2 kernel load up screen when rebooting....but when I check the kernel version on my phone, it says 2.6.32.9. Is this the default kernel that comes with cognition 3.04? I thought it was supposed to say Firebird or something...
 
im runnning cognition 3.04. I've never used a custom kernel before and I've only just flashed my first rom half a day before trying the kernel. I'm not sure what differences I'm supposed to see, but I have noticed that the phone sometimes vibrate randomly while charging. Once it even popped up a error message and restarted itself before I could read what it was
 
I already flashed back to stock using ODIN to get cog 3.4. Afterwards, I tried flashing Firebird. Is there a problem with that?

Yes, you should flash back to stock and then flash to Firebird. All of the Devs recommend that you flash back to stock before you flash their ROM, unless you are upgrading from 2.04 to 2.05 and they provide an upgrade file.
 
wait...is firebird a kernel or a rom? If I flash back to stock, wouldn't I lose cog 3.04?
I thought you can run cog 3.04 with firebird kernel...

You can flash just the kernel, you have to extract it from the ROM - although I thought I'd seen just the kernel for download over on XDA.

What do you mean extract the kernel from the from? you mean that the kernel is within the rom zip file? I'm thinking on re-flashing cog3.04 because i keep getting random errors. how would I do that if I'm already on cog 3.04? would I need to do a factory reset?

Yes, I guess you extract it from the ROM zip. I've never done it. As for reflahing I'd do a full master clear and start over.
 
I'm not even sure if I have firebird flashed properly... can somebody confirm for me what the kernel version 2.6.32.9 is? Is that firebird? I have a feeling that its not, but I do have the firebird start up screen so I'm not sure.

The battery life right now is pretty much the exact same as stock eclair....
 
I thought that when I ran Firebird v5, my Kernel version had 2.6.32.9 on the first line, and Firebird2-v0.5 on the second line. I'm not totally sure on this though.

The Firebird2 kernel has been updated to v8, and I know for certain that if you were to install Firebird2 v8, you will see 2.6.32.9 on the first line, and Firebird2-v0.8 on the second line in About phone -> Kernel version.

ok I just reflashed cog 3.04 and firebird v8. I still don't see that it says firebird. It stills says 2.6.32.9

I just flashed firebird v8 just to see what it says. My phone says:

2.6.32.9
Firebird2-v0.8 #77
 
this is really weird...I just reflashed back to firebird 2v8

Can somebody confirm that this is the correct procedure? Use SGS kernel flasher and then choose the firebird.zip file?

Depends on which install version of Firebird you downloaded. I believe you need to download the "ODIN" version to use neldar's kernel flasher.

Since DG has been releasing ClockworkMod-installer kernels, I've been using those. Same procedure as if you were to install a ROM, move the kernel to the phone, boot into Clockwork Recovery, and choose the zip.
 
just tried flashing the ODIN version. Its the same thing. The kernel hasn't changed, but the firebird start up screen is there... =(
