I'm just about at the end of my rope with trying to get my Eris to not suck, and I need advice.

I rooted my Eris about 2 months ago and settled on one of the Nonsensikal ROMs. I really enjoyed it for the most part (considering that the only thing I couldn't do was play Angry Birds), but I kept having the "undead" call issue. I've been reading the boards trying to find a solution, and I know that there's a radio update, but there doesn't seem to be a consensus as to whether or not it will brick my phone. I got so tired of the undead calls that I just gave up and went back to stock 2.1, but now I am ready to destroy the phone with a sledgehammer a la Office Space. Help!

1.) Is there a ROM that I can try that won't give me the undead call problem?

2.) If such a ROM doesn't yet exists, is there a definitive answer on whether or not the radio update will brick my phone and/or solve the undead calls?

At this point, stock 2.1 and undead calls are both dealbreakers, so I'm ready to jump ship and go to an EVO Shift on Sprint or a iPhone 4 on AT&T, even if it means forking over a $280 ETF to VZW (I'm not upgrade eligible till 2/14/2012!). But if I could save some money by finding a true fix, I'm willing to try.

If I am not mistaken, the undead call problem seems to be only a problem with the CyanogenMod based ROMs. All of the 2.2 ROMs are CyanogenMod based, so they are probably out. However, there are 2.1 ROMs that are not stock (but based on stock), and even a vanilla, non-Cyanogen, AOSP ROM that you may want to try first.

So,

xtrSENSE - looks and feels like stock, without the lag problems.

xtrROM - many of the HTC Sense framework pieces without the Sense launcher

Vanilla 2.0.4 - the non-Cyanogen, AOSP based ROM that I mentioned. This one has its own issues (no automatic brightness, for example), but if you like vanilla, this one may be worth a try

xtrRCMix, TaintedTenzo - two other 2.1 ROMs that are based on HTC stock without stock problems.

I'd give these a try and see if they are workable. You may want to see if you are iPhone 4 eligible on VZW, by the way - they sent me an email inviting me to start shopping at 3 am February 3, and I am not upgrade eligible until August. it may be cheaper than breaking your contract and switching to AT&T.
 
Thanks, doogald. I'll definitely give those ROMs a shot.

I got the invite e-mail from VZW too, but I don't think they're going to let anyone upgrade early unless they're eligible, considering that they already killed the New Every 2 program. I'm just hoping to get by with my Eris for another year or at least long enough that my ETF won't be as steep.

Hey Scotty, thanks for getting me to look at the Froshedyo thread (or at least part of it). I gotta start reading more threads, lol, since I feel like I'm missing-out on a lot of good discussions. ;)

It was interesting to read the discussions about checksums and doogald's excellent feedback / information and reference to my app (thanks again, doogald!).

I do have plans to add more checksum types (like SHA2) in the very near future to AFV (I simply supported MD5 since its what most people publish and use, and SHA1 since that is what is used in the signed .jar-type files (such as .apks, ROM's, installable .zips, etc.)).

Now, back to our regular programming...:D

I still have the problem but only two or three times definitely not like it was. Glad to see your still checking in on us Scary.
