Root Factory wipe and sd wipe for root

Granite1

Zercron Encrusted Tweezer
Quick question before I begin my root.

I read it is recommended to wipe the SD and Factory reset before I root. Has anyone experienced any problems not wiping? I didn't do either of these when I rooted my Hero, and it went fine. I understand the evo is a much more sophisticated device, so this is probably a good idea. Just didn't want my original backup to be stock factory, if it doesn't need to be.

If I want to unroot it will be factory anyway right?

I'm just nervous about rooting this piece, could be a very expensive paperweight. :(

It's always recommended you do a Full Wipe prior to making any major changes (switching betweens ROM's, etc.). It's just better to start fresh with a clean slate so to speak.

BTW, I've never read or heard about anyone bricking their Evo using Unrevoked's one click root method....You'll be okay. :D

OK, I'll wipe everything now.

Will I need to reload the bootloader interface driver?

Started that process without thinking...DOH!

I always wiped everything but the SD card when I flashed stuff on the Hero. This is new and strange, just being over cautious. :)

Unrevoked worked like a charm, no problems. Updating the profile and PRL, then its time to flash something!!

Sooo many ROMs to choose from.....

I lasted 1 week 2 days stock. I'm a flashaholic, no question!!

LoL, glad it worked out smoothly for you! Happy flashing and don't forget to make a nandroid backup before doing so! :D

Oh, one more thing....ok two things.

The latest unrevoked loaded CM 3.0xxx correct?
I assume I should DL CM 2.6xxx and flash it correct?

I thought I read this somewhere, the new CM messes with some of the ROMs. I am aware 3.0xxx is a requirement for GB. :) I'm not playing with GB until it's stable.

I can't believe I rooted this thing, if my wife knew what I was doing she'd kill me in my sleep!

The version of CW you have is fine. The stipulation is if you have an Evo with the newer hboot and partitions, you have to run CW version 2.6 and above to experience full functionality...You have 3.0, so you're fine. Congrats on successfully rooting!

Thanks!

I do have the newest hboot version and such it's the 2.10.xxx Iforget the rest. (I did before root)
HW version 004

I had issues with CW 3.0xxx in my hero. Nands were screwing with me, had completely toasted backups and such, very unpleasant. Just double checking the setup, wanna be kosher. :)

I think you guys are talking about different issues :). 2.5.0.1 doesn't work on newer phones because of the different partitions. 2.6.0.1 and 3.0.0.x will work on newer phones just fine, BUT 3.0.0.x supports edify update scripts only, while 2.6.0.1 supports both edify and amend. What that means is, 2.6.0.1 can flash everything out there, including CM GB, etc. and anything older, while 3.0.0.x can only flash zips that have been updated to use edify. If you don't use 2.6.0.1, expect to have trouble flashing some things. You're better off with 2.6.0.1.

You can tell if a flashable zip is edify or amend by opening it and looking in META-INF/com/googl/android. If you see one file named update-script, it's the old format, and you'll need CW 2.6.0.1 to flash it. If it has two files named updater-script (note the slightly different name) and update-binary, then it's the new format, and you can use either Clockwork 2.6.0.1 or 3.0.0.x. Most devs are starting to use edify, but be aware that you're better off using 2.6.0.1 for now.

What hboot version was your Hero? Was it an *older* model? If you're phone is older with the older hboot and partitions and would like to stay with CW recovery, you'll need version 2.5 and below. Newer phone, newer hboot and partitions, CW 2.6 and above. If not you'll experience those same issues you were describing with your backups etc. Amon RA 2.1 and above can work with either newer or older models.

I personally use Amon RA.

You're right. It does appear we were talking about 2 different things. Thanks for the clarification Akazabam.

Good, thanks folks! :)
I thought there was something I read about that, just wanted to be sure.
I've thought about trying amn ra, didn't get to try on the Hero. I upgraded before I had the chance, now all my time is with the evo. I might give it a try once I read up on it.

The new rom manager will flash the 3.0.xx cm recovery correct?

I need to flash the 2.6.0.1 from recovery don't I?

On my Hero, I replaced the cm image from the old rom manager with the newer image and reflashed from the app.
The new setup with the evo is throwing me off, I get confused too easily! :)

Rom manager is still using 2.6
You have the option to install others and the option to install anon ra all from rom manager.

Ok, thanks I'm trying to flash now.

I'm having issues flashing CM, keeps saying error flashing recovery. tried it a few times.

Glad you got it working. ROM manager can be picky sometimes. If you ever need to flash recovery again, but can't get ROM manager to work, you can flash recovery from hboot as a PC36IMG.zip file, as well.

I was reading this thread and I knew about the amend/edify stuff with clockwork but I had a question, what does the newest version of RA support? Does it support both amend and edify?

Yep. You can flash anything with CW 2.6.0.1 and RA (any version). Also, keep an eye out for RA 2.3. It's in beta, right now. It should still support both amend and edify, though, I believe.

If I upgrade when it comes out will I be able to use my current backups or will it make all of those unusable?

It's backwards compatible. Here's the changelog so far:

Changelog v2.3-test03 <-> v2.2.1 :
Nandroid will skip sd-ext backup when it's not present.
Nandroid will not check the battery percentage anymore.
Switched off signature check by default (Stop asking now, ok?).
Cache is not selected as part of a default Nandroid backup anymore.
Added wipe Boot, System and sdcard to the wipe menu.
Re-ordered some items in the wipe menu.
Switched to a CM android-msm-2.6.35-unified kernel (should stop the endless dots).

Everything else is the same.
