Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

Great Article - One point i differ on tho is that HTC has made a 1.6 update already for T-Mobile G1/Dream that is a fact.

So it kinda changes the dynamics of your blog, but i see where you are going with this and i agree.

I will not let Rogers off the hook with this cause they are in this neck deep but in the meantime HTC has really only gotten pressure from Rogers and not the customers and is time to include them in this mess.

In one of earlier posts i had stated i had conversation with a PR department at HTC where no real useful information came to light. But i did not mention that i grilled them about Android and how they were supporting it.Is was clear from that conversation that they did not have any roadmaps or plans to properly support this device or others.
They have no architecture in place for updating these phones on a regular basis.I expressed my displeasure that i had to contact the carrier and HTC in order to find out about future updates and that they should not be selling phones that they do not plan to support properly. These are their phones and need to be supporting and updating them on a regular basis much like the iphones. Will carriers and customers have to put pressure on them everytime so they support their phones properly???
Their response was much like Rogers with their corporate apologies and we are looking into the matter and no real response worth mentioning. It was quite obvious the guy i was talking to was aware of the issue but was way above his head and did not have any concrete answers or was even involved in those type of conversations.

At the end of the day it is HTC that has provide this update and future updates and they are in bed with Rogers so both deserve to share blame in this fiasco and is time for us to direct our attention to HTC aswell. We have lit the flame under Rogers and now is time to put more heat on HTC!!!!!!!!!

very good, thank you for pointing me to this as I may have to do something like this in the new year.

However, what is the point of the author of that post switching to a hero on telus' network? I will only switch if I know 100% that telus will support the hero and it will indeed get 2.x upgrades, otherwise how is it any different than this situation with rogers?

Does anyone still have the email address for the office of the President?

I am tired of big corps being able to simply say "No" and that is the final answer. Back in the day, companies had to answer to us and had to afford us a certain amount of respect in order to stay alive.

Now, big companies can simply refuse a service or product that should have been offered and they don't even need to answer at all let alone answer TO us.

We, as Rogers' Android users, are very soon going to be in a position where our SMARTphones will barely even be able to make calls as the ROM stops working and there's no way to fix it. We, as Canadians, are far too complacent. We are continuously slapped in the face by companies like Rogers and we resort to doing... well... nothing. Nada. Letter writing campaigns?! That just leads to letter shredding campaigns on the other end. Trust me, I've been a Customer "Service" Rep before and our complaints amount to little more than comical stories around the lunch table and boardrooms.

Does anyone have any non-violent methods to get through to these f***ing J*ck A**es?! Come on guy and girls, we're a joke to them. It's like we're paying 100.00$ a month to have them laugh in our faces.

Cheers!

Barkley,

The latest is that Rogers has asked HTC for an upgrade, and HTC is "investigating options". We will have to see what RogersMary comes back with in the near furture.

However, we are certainly not letting up in the least, and we are certainly doing more than simple letter writing. With three blogs dedicated to this cause, as well as repeated mentions on other blogs and on Twitter, our visibility on the web is increasing. Anyone doing a little research before buying these phones _will_ find us, and will be able to make a proper decision about whether or not to buy. We have already influenced a number of people not to buy these phones, and every time that happens we let RogersMary.

Believe me, they are listening to us. We are about ready to put them on a time line, and if they don't meet it, we all start demanding to be let out of our contracts or to be given iPhones, as some members are already doing.

You can do your part by pestering @RogersMary on Twitter, or going through the Rogers complaint system here: Contact Rogers - Call Us, Email Us, Send Mail

So far it isn't.
While HTC has made the commitment to push a Sense + 2.0 update to HTC Heros it all boils down to the carriers requesting the update.

If Telus pull a Rogers they are in the same boat.

This should hit the fan now.
Mary, look how T-mobile lead by example :P

I bet you anything that in the end the answer which Rogers will come back with to us is, "Sorry HTC will not be making an update available".

i forwarded your blog to them yesterday and they did a decent piece, well that or they just happened to stumbled on your blog.....

i just want to chime in a bit on the rooting process,my friend has a rogers dream and we tried to root.well once we did some serious reading up on it we tried the one click root method on his phone.well we tried to enter fastboot commands and had trouble.we did it twice and neither of us are computer novices by any means.in the end the phone locked up and we were able to install the latest rogers rom update to save the phone.we had some help from xda forums but their is some info lacking for basic users on doing this and is not clear cut instructions if you run into problems.i envy those that have rooted phones being able to try new stuff out and play with the latest gadgets and everything. At the end of the day though the process can be overwhelming for most users.rooting is not for everyone and their are alot of bricked phones to prove it.you can't blame people for not rooting.....

people should not have to root period....

carriers, manufacturers and google need to get on the same page so they can give everyone the same experience and update these phones properly.i don't care to have rogers,at&t or tmobile junk on my phone and that junk handicaps the phone and slows them down anyways.just leave the phones alone and the android community to the customizing of these phones and it will increase postive user experience.something the iphone got really right was taking the carriers and manufacters out of corrupting users experience from that perspective.

if anything i hope rogers and htc learn allot from this experience because with the future of android just beginning is time for them and others to learn they sell cell phones and have no business messing with software or they endup in the position they are now with unhappy customers.

when i buy android again it will not be a carrier branded phone or HTC until they get things right .... it will be a google experience phone or a iphone cause i don't want my experience handcuffed and disabled by them.....

I should not have to root the phone i just paid good money for on a 3 year contract to get updates it should be getting and have to fight with manufacturers and carriers to support the product properly.

rogers needs a android division and needs to clean this mess up and save face.....google needs to take manufacturers out of the custom rom business...let them create apps for the phones if they want to put junk on it.......

sorry for my rant but i needed to release.....

That would be nice if HTC went that route and decided to skip 1.6 and give us 2.X, in an ideal world, that would be the best solution for us Rogers Dream/Magic owners.

funny string of e-mails with rogers.... such bs.

latest e-mail from rogers:

----------------------------------
Dear xxxxx,

In your recent email, you have informed us that you are not pleased that Rogers is presently not offering the Android 1.6 firmware upgrade.

We would like to inform you that HTC is not currently planning any Android 1.6 upgrades for Rogers Dream or Magic. Android 1.6 was only made available for

Having people making the complaints to Rogers may get their attention but I seriously don't think a petition will help. What will help is when their problem get published on the media like TV or newspaper. Unless someone can approach the to the TV station and voice out their problem. From what i heard from the guy from HTC, it doesn't sound promising. Since he said that Rogers never get their updates from HTC for their Windows mobile phone customers. He added " I don't see why Android would get one". And Rogers keep bragging about working with HTC putting up the update.

Sometimes I wonder, If a phone company stop supporting a product that they sell, is that a breach of contract? One thing i hate to see is carrier often try to customize their rom but refuse to keep up with the update. Too bad i am not a lawyer, maybe what Rogers is doing is wrong and maybe we can take legal action on them.

This won't work you all seem to forget that Rogers Owns half the media outlets in this country... you think they will let a story that Dirties their name air on the news or on print??? NO WAY

Quick Question

Noticed everyone is talking about the HTC Models and I know you guys have had yours for wayyy longer then I have had my LG EVE but I'm pretty happy with my Eve so far the only thing I dont like is not getting paid apps. IS 1.6 really that much better?

I don't think it's about if it's better, it's about Rogers and the phone manufacturers not updating the devices they sell. I own the Eve as well and I also am happy with it, but I still want 1.6 or newer. Certain apps only work with 1.6 or newer, so we deserve the updates.

Paid Apps is a separate issue involving Google. Rumours are they will come to Canada in the new year.

As for 1.6 being better: Other than the list of things here, there are apps in the Market Place NOW that require 1.6 or above to run, including the new Google Goggles, and Turn-by-turn GPS, amongst others. As devs update their apps for 1.6 or 2.0, sometimes they can not, or will not, make them backwards compatible, so the older 1.5 version disappears from the Marketplace. This will happen more and more until we are left with a very small selection, or unable to get apps at all.

Rogers does own a great deal of media but the Internet is not within their control to sensor. 32000 views of this thread suggests that linking has become effective. Search Google Rogers 1.6, the details are top returns, search Rogers HTC the information is picked up within the first 5 hits.

My twitter post reads: Did you get an "obsolete" cell for Xmas? Beware, Rogers sells HTC phones that they admitted will not be supported. Rogers Dream 1.6 Update - Page 22 - Android Forums This will hit the search engines via numerous deep links.

I think both Rogers and HTC are aware that this issue has surfaced. I also believe that they are not concerned and have turned the corner. Those of us who purchased the HTC Dream or Magic are collateral damage. HTC has Nexus One as the next focus, Rogers will need to hope that iphone remains their top line revenue producer.

At this point, I believe that it is important to inform the consumer that any sale involving the devices in question and Rogers, would be ill advised.
Do not sign any contracts with Rogers, Do not pay more than $20 / mnth for 6GB.
