March 6th Release - Feb 13th pre-sale.

the problem is inspire releases on 2/13, atrix pre-order on 2/13. if you bought inspire, i dont think they let you pre-order atrix?
i rather have inspire huge 4.3" screen, but atrix latest ad said "surf web 2X faster"?....
why do att always getting garbage phones??
if i want 4.3" screen, i lose the dual core. if i want dual core, i lose the 4.3" screen!
on verizon, i can have both, 4.3 screen and dual core on a single phone, Bionic !

It is a shot in dark, but after reading the official press release from engadget about the dock costing $499 out of contract im just heart broken. There is no way i can spend $1000 on that phone. It sucks because i am an employee so i have to pay full price for everything. I guess ill be keeping the inspire longer than i thought (which is not a bad thing)

and in AT&T's defense, the inspires verizon counter part, the thunder bolt, is the same phone, but with a front facing camera and will be sold at $200 so if you can live with out the front facing camera, its a pretty good option for people who do not want to shell out $200-500 for the atrix.

EDIT:

I think its a better deal to do with the inspire now, and buy a tablet for $500 like xoom later. I am very disappointed at these price points

I still like the phone. Tegra2 for $200 is fine with me. If I'm going to own this phone for at least 18 months, I want something that will hopefully take advantage of the Honeycomb version for phones when it gets released. Not so sure the Inspire will perform as well at that point.

But I was never planning on getting the laptop dock anyways, so no big deal for me.

honeycomb will only require dualcore with Tablets not phones thats why they will be two different versions

I have a feeling that they will do this, and then in 3-6 months after the iOhone users leave to go to Verizon and the Atrix starts to flop because of price, they will change their tune.
I have to say that them requiring a tethering plan doesn't shock me that much because they just do not care about their customers, they view us as walking piles of cash, and they could care less about fairness and whether their users are happy.

So, who exactly are they marketing here? You have to pay for tethering and lose unlimited if you want to dock it...why wouldn't you just tether a REAL laptop at that point. Anyone using it for business would already have a mobile computing solution. If I was going to lose unlimited and pay for tethering, I'm tethering my MBP.

It's just corporate money grubbing. There is NO TETHERING GOING ON HERE! You are using YOUR phone to access the web. I don't agree with added tether costs no matter what because it's my data, but this is EVEN WORSE!

AS i said in Atrix.

I have been a buisness traveler 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year...for 10 years.

NO WAY IN HELL, an experienced buisness travelor leaves home with this. He/she takes the most powerful fully functional lap top and the best phone he can take. Period.

He does NOT hamstring his functionality with this, nor does he waste valuable suitcase/lap top bag realestate with something that's "1/3 a computer" when he could just carry the real thing.

Yea the power business user will probably have apps they need to use not available on the Atrix but if they have access to Citrix I can see some trying this out. I worked for a company supporting their Lan which every user there except us in the IT department used thin clients running Citrix. I could login in remotely through Citrix and do anything I wanted as if I were sitting there in front of my computer including administering the 30 plus Citrix servers. So this may be a nice package for a business user. Most businesses today are using Dell or IBM laptops which aren't the lightest of laptops so I can see someone wanting a smaller package. Also most business users who carry a laptop also carry a 3G USB modem or Hotspot which is also an added expense when they could just use the data connection from the Atrix while in the laptop dock

These prices will never stick. When they realize their initial sales numbers are not what they expected, they will eventually be forced to offer a more competitive pricing. That I am certain.

I'm not so sure its even a pricing issue as much as a data plan issue.

connecting the phone to the laptop dock is not any form of tethering. If the laptop dock was an actual laptop (CPU, windows os, ram etc) then i can see at&t charging for it. But because the laptop dock is basically a screen with a charger for the phone, they cant call it tethering.

Guys its $500 plus the monthly fees!! You are required to get the tethering add on!!!!!!!

The first combines ATRIX 4G and the Motorola Laptop Dock for a promotional price of $499.99 after a two-year service contract and $100 mail-in-rebate after subscription to Data Pro smartphone data plan and tethering add on.

You also have to spend $600 on day one!! and thats not including taxes and fees!!! If regular people could spend that much in one day there would be no need for subsidized pricing.

This will fail horribly for regular consumers...

That's what I was thinking!! There is no tethering going on here at all! All of the communication is only happening through the phone. The phone is merely displaying video output on a different screen! Its not providing actual internet access TO the notebook shell.

Sorry, I cannot justify purchasing this phone now. I was all-in before, but now I'm folding. Seriously considering other phones now. :( I'm going to look into buying an actual netbook for my couch potato browsing scenarios and just a normal smart phone for my phone requirements.

That is seriously ignorant. WTF are they thinking requiring TETHERING? WTF are you going to tether to it?

Was so looking forward to this but now? Now it's a really bad dream.

From AT&T's FB page.

Of the new AT&T Android phones, the Atrix was what I was most excited about. Also, I had never planned on getting the laptop dock. That being said, should I stick with the Atrix or should I also consider the HTC Inspire? It does leave a bad taste in my mouth how much they are charging for the dock even though I wasn't planning to get one.

Even then, the future of smartphones is multiple core processing. I want a little future-proofing if I'm holding on to a phone for 18 months... I'm stuck with AT&T, and I am sick of waiting for the next best thing, so I think the Atrix will be fine.

I'm not so sure its even a pricing issue as much as a data plan issue.

Not really worried about the data plan, as long as you're only required a minimum data service for $15/mth there's always going to be some sort of work around. Getting this device rooted will be very essential.

I am in the same boat..

It's very clear from the press release that AT&T will require the tethering plan for data to be used in the webtop mode. It doesn't matter if you buy the laptop doc bundled with the phone or separately.

The good news is that they have also announced that the tethering add-on will now increase your data usage allotment to 4GB. At least that makes more sense. I didn't understand before how they could charge more money but still only allow you to use the same amount of data.
