Desire HD Battery Thread

Hi i have had my DHD a week now and the battery life was driving me mad a lot worse than my Nexus one. So i searched the internet and found this procedure to double the battery life, i thought yeh and pigs might fly. So i gave it a go and it works. My battery is lasting alot longer even with 3G,GPS,display on auto, updates on,bluetooth on, etc nothing turned off. The procedure is as follows.

(1) Turn phone on and charge battery for 8hrs

(2) Unplug charger and turn phone off, plug charger in and charge phone for another 1hr

(3) Unplug charger and turn phone on wait 2 minutes and turn phone off and charge for another 1hr. Your battery should last alot longer. :D;)

Hi there. This method seems to work, however, it only works a limited amount of time and you then need to repeat it. There are various reports on how long this trick works, but it's worth a shot. Personally, I recommend conditioning the battery from the very first use. This will come in my comprehensive battery guide over the weekend (I hope to get time to write it then). But good luck trying that trick, hope it works as good as it can :)

Please help. My DHD seems to be using a lot of battery from Android OS. How or what do i need to do to lower this?

As I have explained in earlier posts, I suspect it is the RAM that the phone uses to keep its programs running. This has not been proven, but it is my theory as a electrical engineer student and studying my use and the process of the phone. The longer the phone has been on, the more "Android OS" seems to be pulling, which (if you don't use a good task-killer app) my educated guess means the RAM is getting more and more filled up by applications you start running.

There are two ways to fix this.

1) Reboot about once a day (this is a RESTART, not power off )
2) install a good task-killer app, and run it about 2-3 times a day. I recommend "Advanced Task Killer Free" by ReChild

PS! I'm sure someone (yet again that hasn't read all my posts about the theory behind this) will post I'm wrong and that task-killer apps are bad for the phone. So I'm going to safeguard myself, and say This is my advice. Only follow it if you want to

Good luck with your phone, and please do write if you figure out of something else :D. I do want to be corrected if my theory is wrong, but so far nobody seems to have been able to produce any information about this :D

What u mean with killer !! is that mean it will disabled every apps installed and running ? So after this I only win battery life but not using my phone ?

i have the same problem, the android OS is a big sucker of the battery.

i'm seriously doubting the capability of the android OS now, because this is my first phone and my sis which uses a t-mobile pulse has similar problems

i want to be able to use my phone and if i play one session of angry birds or use some maps search, thats it....i have to go and close those apps manually or the battery would die in the next 3-4 hours.

btw, i have turned off GPS and wireless when not in use.

Are you sure you don't have any other dodgy software installed that might be using background resources?? I use these apps too without ever closing them and I get about 2 days out of one charge...(Also with wifi and data network turned off unless I use it)

Cheers

A task-killer will basically shut down any running program you have not defined it to ignore. It will not uninstall it, so you can just start up the program right after, but the most important function it does by shutting down the processes, is that it dumps the RAM memory.

The power consumption stated by "Android OS" has become significantly large for me after I have conducted a test with not using task-killer apps... Before this test, my Android OS would never pull more than 2-3% battery in 48 hours. And when I charged before this experiement, I had still 15-20% battery life left at 48 hours.

Thus I am concluding, that the measurement "Android OS" is the battery that programs are using while ON/running on Android OS, which can include the battery usage of storing information in the RAM.

So you use your phone applications like you want, but say every 4-6 hours, you run the task-killer app once, and you will save a lot of battery :)

i got nothing else on, its a brand new phone, just like a week.

one day it worked great coz i didnt start any apps and it last like 24 hrs from one charge to the next.

its not a problem otherwise for normal phone, but once i start apps like maps or camera the Android OS starts sucking battery and i need to do a restart and close all apps. i dont use twitter or facebook and uninstalled angry birds.

the point is its a 500$ phone, i dont want to restrict myself and not use the features worrying about the battery life!!!

So your phone only lasted 24hrs without using any apps?? That's really not normal that should last for days... Did you try the charging tips that were mentioned on this forum? My battery became better and better during the first 2 weeks.

Cheers

The highlighted part shows, and backs up my earlier theory, it is the programs sucking up battery by using RAM. A restart dumps this memory, and the phone lasts longer again.

Install a good task-kill app to free up your RAM regularly :)

The highlighted part doesn't back up anything... He says he gets only 24hrs without using ANYTHING!! Which clearly means something else is causing battery drain or not a good charge...

Hey huys, I'm pretty new here. I just got my DHD with Telus and I absolutely LOVE this phone....I have watchdog, Advanced Task Killer (By ReChild) and AVG Security Pro. The battery actually seems not that bad for what I was expecting out of the first few charges on this phone, but my question is this: When I go and check how much each thing is using up on the CPU in Watchdog, HTC Sense shows 33.6%....Android Sys. is 5%...But in my Battery Monitor Widget, the Display uses 69%....is that telling me OVERALL how much each thing has used in one charge? I'm super new to this and want to learn it, I'm so SICK of iPhone. also, I have OS Monitor (I know, I'm just trying to find ones that work well) it tells me on avg my CPU is using anywhere from 7-12% idle when the screen is on...I dont know what it is when its off...Thanks for any tips. I'm glad I joined the Android Brotherhood.

Ok. I installed a task killer and after few hours of use I killed the apps. Its te same thing as a reboot and dumping memory that is being taken by android OS.

Now what I would prefer is that the task killer app not run in the background And when I want to kill task I can open the app and kill the other running tasks them shutdown this task killer app again.

My battery lasted like 30 hours with lot of use email, facebook, and I had wifi on all the time and GPS off

Also I have to say since it's only a week I need to give the battery some time for it to condition itself and now it's performing much better than the first few days and got me really worried.

I have also now uninstalled the task killer and want to see if the android OS starts to suck up the battery again

The ATK "Advanced Task Killer Free" by ReChild from the market does as you want. It's an app you start, and it kills all apps running, including itself until you tap its icon again.

Hope it helps you :)

I have also just posted my comprehensive guide, you might wanna read it. I have now finished conducting the test that you now have started :). My results show that "Android OS" will always increase if you don't clear your RAM somehow. So ofc a reboot of the system helps, but who wants to reboot every day? :)

hey guys, so last night I went to bed at around 12am, and this morning woke at about 8:30...my battery had gone from 79% to 67%...Is this normal for like the third charge? My battery monitor widget last night said my screen had used (SO FAR) 56% of the battery, and Cell Standby was 13% and Phone Idle was 11%...Its now showing 35% (overall) for screen, 26% for cell Standby, and 23% for phone idle...why are the last two using SO MUCH power? Again, I'm new to this Android game, and I want to figure it out. ANYTHING is better than the iPhone.

^Except the DHD xD iPhone 4 is awesome!

Maybe you live in an area where you have signal that goes from 3G to GPRS contasntly, that'll drain the battery.
Any apps that use background data will use battery, widgets updating and email syncing.

...i only turn on wifi when i come in at work, then sync fb, yahoo mail and update some apps. turn it off when walking home, then turn it on and pretty much the same routine as i turn wifi on when reaching home. no app killers, brightness is automatic, a few gaming times, and surfing the net. practically my wifi use is mostly 20hrs on, and i still reach 40-60hrs before i charge my dhd.

...hope this helps to most, but you can turn 'flash' on your browser to enable it 'on demand' only. it hogs the cpu and drains the bat if its always on when surfing the net. been using dolphin browser app eversince i got my dhd last dec and the setting is at 'on demand'. i think the stock app is at 'always on' in the plugins setting. a lot of the tech guys said thats one reason too why apple dont have flash, so they could squeeze more juice out of their gadgets.

...open a web page - menu - toolbox or setting - advance setting - enable plugins - set 'on demand'.:)

cheers:D

SO, in conclusion, I can say that yes, to some extent the task-killer app is not needed, BUT it requires that you reboot your phone almost daily, otherwise your RAM will eat up your phone battery.
Hmm. I get good battery life without running a task killer or rebooting my phone. However, I do seem to have plenty of free memory. I currently have 623MB free (and 123MB used) according to Mini Info. My uptime is 235 hours, just under 10 days without rebooting, according to Settings/About Phone. My battery generally lasts 1%/hour when not being used.

Do you have measurements which show that your RAM is being continually used up?

why are the last two using SO MUCH power?
Those figures should sum to 100%. They are relative, not absolute. A large number for one isn't necessarily bad; it could just mean the others are being especially efficient.

Basically when I didn't run my ATK, the RAM would be on about 100-50 MB free. So basically most of my RAM was taken up. If you also have rooted your DHD and don't start up many apps, then that has a good explanation :D

As for the last part that you answered another guy (thanks for doing it, I'm just writing it in maybe a more simple way to understand, no offense :) ), those numbers HAVE to add up to 100%, as they show the amount the process has used of the battery used SO FAR :). So if you only have used 5% of the battery in total, but it states your display has used 90% of THAT usage, that is pretty normal if you have used your phone actively while losing those 5%. But if you then let your phone lie still and it uses another 5% in standby, the display usage can easily fall down to 50-60% I'd estimate ^^ :). So it is all relative to how much battery you have USED in total. Hope that helps you understand ^^

Hey everyone. New Andriod user here. Got my HTC HD on Thursday evening. Really impressed with the phone itself like many people here are. I have noticed the battery slowly getting stronger past few days.

5th Charge:
Uptime Length: 11 hours 30 mins ( 4 bars left)
Accelerometer: On
3G Or 2G: 3G
Wireless: On
GPS On: Off
Automatic Brightness: Off (set at approx 40%)
Network: TELUS

P.S: Also is their a way to change the battery life to a percentage instead of the "green battery icon". I noticed everyone posting percentage points of their battery but I only have the 10 green bars... Is their a way to switch it to a percentage

P.P.S

1st Charge: 7 hrs
2nd Charge: 8 hrs
3rd Charge: 10 hrs
4th Charge: 11 hrs

Android OS:60%
Display:17%
Voice Calls:8%
Cell Standby:7%
Phone Idle:6%
Android System:2%

Hw to reduce the android os battery consumption...????
