Root Unrevoked3: Is your firmware too new?

Hey all... I also received the "firmware too new?" error message; I uninstalled "APP List Backup", and then my install was just fine. Good advice posted earlier.
 
HELP!!! I'm having the same problem on my HTC EVO and am very frustrated! I have seemed to have done all the steps, but can only maintain Root through Unrevoked3 for 1-2 minutes before my phone reboots and I get the same error:
Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?

I have factory reset my phone, and it still is happening. I have the same ability to Root, both on my Windows machine and my Macbook, and I can do perform tasks during this brief period of time. But they both loose the connection, my phone reboots, and I get the error message again.

Any other suggestions please???

So, it's still in the process of rooting when it reboot, then comes back with that error? If you turn the phone off, then back on while pressing and holding volume down, you will get to hboot. Do you see S-ON or S-OFF? While in hboot, select the recovery option. Where does it take you? If you boot up normally, do you have the superuser app in the app drawer?
 
Ok, so I'm really a newbie apparently at this- sorry for the ignorance. I do not see S-ON or S-OFF? While in hboot, I can select recovery option, and it goes to "ClockworkMod Recovery v2.6.0.1" and has 9 menu selections. Where do I go from there?

Once in Hboot, it will look similar to this:

Hboot will likely be different but you are looking for where it says s-off at the top. If you have recovery, you should be rooted.

Check in your apps drawer and make sure you have Superuser installed. Download the terminal emulator from the market. Open it and type su. The $ should change to # if you are rooted.
 
Ok, so now I see it says S-OFF on the top. I do not have Superuser installed yet. I'm really sorry, but I've spend a day and a half looking at this stuff, and am getting confused I think... :( So what should my next step(s) be at this point.

Yes, do exactly what Xtremedays suggested to determine if the rest of the process worked. Just because you have Clockwork doesn't mean you have S-OFF, but this current version of unrevoked seems to bomb out after granting S-OFF, but messes up recovery. Because of that, you probably do have S-OFF, but check anyway.

EDIT: Ok, nevermind. So you have S-OFF and Clockwork. That's a very good thing. Go ahead and do the test with the terminal emulator (run su). Whether it works or not, go install Superuser from the market, then try. If it still doesn't work, you'll be able to root your rom with z4root. Try the terminal first.
 
Yippee- in Terminal Emulator, if I type in su it DOES come back with a # sign! I've installed SuperUser, and have root access and rooted apps!

OK, so the first time I ran this it went through ok and said "done".
But I have S-ON still.
I tried again and now I get the "too new" error.
Downloaded terminal and can su to # - and see files in /data - but I still cannot uninstall factory apps, I guess because I need S-OFF?
I have a GSM Desire, HBOOT-0.93.0001

Do I need to user AlphaRev...?

Right, you need S-OFF to remove anything on /system. If you turn the phone off, then turn it back on while pressing volume down to get to hboot, do you still see S-ON? If you select recovery, where does it take you? If you have Clockwork recovery, but still have S-ON, you need to flash unrevoked-forever from recovery. You can get it here. Copy the zip to the root (top level) of your sdcard, reboot back into recovery, select the option flash (install) a zip from the sdcard, select the unrevoked-forover zip, and let it flash. Verify in hboot that you have S-OFF after that. Answer the above questions before doing that, though, so that we know that's exactly what you need to do.

I saw "forever" but it only mentions CDMA, not GSM so I wasn't sure whether to try it...
 
Welcome from me as well. I'm not sure which Desire you have, but you should probably re-post your question HERE (HTC Desire, all things root), as there are many differences between CDMA phones and GSM phones. The folks there will be better able to help you, this is not meant to say that akazabam isn't helpful! :) :D
 
Haha, sorry, I didn't even notice you said you had the desire. Sorry, yeah, you'll want to ask over there. Don't try what I suggested :). I took for granted the fact that we're in the Evo section. My bad :p.
 
I didn't spot I was in the Evo section originally - so apologies. I had been googling the error I got and stumbled across this thread! Will head over to the Desire forum now.... <door closes>

Thank you so much. I've been using the latest version for so long and kept getting the (is your firmware too new) message and had given up. Decided to do a search and try again and found your suggestion and it worked perfectly.

I got the same message, but i just run it again and worked for me. (my mistake was, after it boot him self I try to connected into charge) just let the unrevoked do his work.
 
i just registered to say this: THANK YOU for posting the link to old unrEVOked 3.21. It works perfectly without the need to do anything special.

The newest version simply does not work for my SLCD Desire GSM.

I'm almost positive that mine did that the first time I rooted. I think I just unplugged and replugged until it worked. When was the last official update you received or have knowledge of receiving?

Back in December when I rooted using unrEVOked, I had just updated and unrEVOked at the time wasn't able to work so I had to wait about a week and then they finally came out with the new unrEVOked software for our versions.

If you had an update come recently, expect that to be your problem, if not, then just unplug and replug 3-5 times and if it keeps showing the message, your firmware is probably too new. 3 times should be suffice to tell you if it is or isn't.
 
Hello friends, i'm in same situation, show the message (...too new), I cleared all data of cell, im trying initialize the recovery, but my cell shows some image(dont shows files to navigate), i tryed root using USB storage, but dont works, help me plz!

There are times that apps that you download can interfere with the process. Factory reset deletes everything but what the phone came with and makes it basically a clean slate to start from.
 
Lost root on an Unrevoked3 Evo 4G and found this thread while trying to solve my problem. Turns out that switching from charge only to hard disc drive was also the solution for me. No clearing of data or wipes required. If you're getting this error I say to try this first as it's easiest.
