HTC Desire : Upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3

I have a Desire running 2.3 and an unrooted Desire HD and here's my highly subjective viewpoint....

1) The Desire has simply shocking multimedia capture. It's an embarrassment. The DHD is orders of magnitude better in this respect.
2) The Desire HD goes from "slightly too big" to "just right" very quickly and I have found that the original Desire now looks and feels too small.
3) The DHD SLCD screen is a bit, well, average. Especially next to an AMOLED device or the iPhone4's Retina display. But unless you're running devices literally side-by-side this is essentially a non-issue.
4) Go with a device that is the most future-proof.
5) Wait for the upcoming slew of new devices just on the horizon - you'll kick yourself if you buy a new Desire now - especially on contract.
6) Make the wait bearable with a second-hand nexus one or desire. Root it and play around.

Yeah! been waiting for this all along. hopefully they bring in the new sense 2.1, the one used in the desire s, as well.

Remember, unbranded handsets will get it before branded ones - I'll still believe it when I see it, mind

It is amazing to see a device older than a year still getting major OS updates.
I love my Desire and I love HTC. :)
I hate carriers for branding the phones. :(

And debranded handsets will most likely have to wait for an RUU to come out if the last update is anything to go by.

I'll be waiting for the RUU anyway - I never use OTA updates even when I wasn't rooted

Never had an OTA but from reading these forums, I would say its more problematic.

Can always temp root and titanium backup if data is your issue.

Only data I'd wanna save is Angry Birds - everything else is in the cloud (delete SMSs after reading, Gmail archived once read, etc)

I had no problems at all when I updated to 2.2 using VF's official update.

I'll wait for their release. I must admit I'm surprised we're getting this.

Ditto - VF Froyo OTA went really well. It did though take longer than flashing a new rom as it had to reboot a couple of times - 30 mins or so but all was perfect and nothing was lost.

That said, I certainly wouldn't be waiting until Summer for a fairly minor update if I really wanted it.

Sense? Really? It's so ugly though.

Good that non-root users will be getting Gingerbread as well. It's very much worth the wait. :) Especially if you get the default Gingerbread notification bar.

Unless I'm mistaken it doesn't let you 'spell out' names using the keypad instead of dialing a number or going through the contacts. Too used to doing things that way. :)
