HTC Desire : Upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3

Maybe "awful" was to strong. When it works it's ok. But I'm just frustrated that it seems to not work all the time unless I want to root the ROM with the RUU or whatever it's called.

I'm currently running rooted stock Gingerbread. Had problems with low memory until I just bought Titanium Backup Pro to fiddle here and there and now I've got nearly twice as many apps as before with over 20MB left. Didn't have to flash a custom ROM with A2SD or anything.
Definitely worth a shot if you don't want to go through that trouble.

How does Ti save space? If you are S-Off you can merge system app updates, but that's all I can think of - and S-Off is an extra step for most (and gives you more powerful options than this ;)).

Ah, right - forgot that. Been so long since it was an issue, I guess

Never let my space get as low as 20MB though - that would have felt like a real crisis to me!

The memory issue hasn't been solved enough for me with the upgrade to 2.3, i'm fed up so I going to take a chance and try rooting. Am I right in thinking that I can now root even though I did the official upgrade to 2.3, does the latest unrevoked do it?

Yeah Ti does that for you too, but it's more spoonfed I guess. Easier and safer if you don't want to go tinkering in the system files yourself.

No, you need to S-OFF first. Use Revolutionary to S-OFF and follow their guide to root afterward, it's pretty straightforward.

This sounds good, however I did recover the wrong date when I went back to sense. I have to do s-off etc, all over again. At least I have the stuff saved.... Somewhere

Pray tell, just how does titanium pro work?! I'm rooted, but sadly like most things it's only user friendly when you know what you are doing

Firstly, go into the preferences and choose a value for "max backup history" - by default it's 1, but if you'd like to have the option of keeping say the 3 most recent backups of each app rather than just the last, you should change this.

Then go to the backup/restore tab, press the menu key and select "batch". You'll then get a menu of batch operations to choose from (e.g. "backup all user apps and system data", or "restore missing apps with data"). Remember never to restore system data if you change ROMs.

You can also select an individual app from the list and take a backup of it, restore a previous backup, or other options.

Once you've seen these things I think it's fairly self-explanatory how to use them. There are some further options if you long-press an app, but they are less commonly used ones for most people.

1. Installation is easy and without problems
2. Re-obtaining Contacts, Calendar, etc from backup worked as a charm
3. Starting time reduced to 4-5 seconds
4. Battery life improved 30% aprox
5. Internet browsing seems to be faster (might be only an impression...)

In short: Do it ! A lot to gain, nothing to lose !:)

i used the HTC 2.3 upgrade and after 2 days no had an issue yet

went on well and runs smootly. maybe me but the phone just seems a little bit slicker.

htc flashlight does not work :( but i have a replacement that does the job.

Mark Moons from HTC Europe sent out this tweet earlier today:

"We maken binnenkort bekend welke devices in aanmerking komen voor een Gingerbread upgrade"

Translation: We'll soon announce wich devices will get a Gingerbread update.

Let's hope the original Desire will be one of them.

No chance :( They barely got 2.3 on the device!

Wait for Cyanogenmod - more chance of them getting 4 on the HTC Desire than HTC :D
