HTC Desire : Upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3

It continues. While I was away on holiday and in need of the camera, TWICE the phone crashed. And not in a 'forced close' way. No. The whole handset shut down and took an age to restart.

I realise that HTC state that this should only be done by developers, which I am not. Surely however they shouldhave released software that WORKS for all rather than this buggy mess?

I tried a factory reset and it didn't work. What other recourse do I have now? None, I expect

They mention time and time again that it was for developers, NOT for general consumption by all.

And they also put warnings saying that it may possibly contains bugs and unfinished coding etc.

So like SUroot suggest, I would sit down...have a cup of tea...READ THROUGH ALL THE ROOT INSTRUCTIONS and then slowly but surely root your phone and install a 2.3 gingerbread ROM..

that will solve all problems.

Thanks Shep and SURoot. I did have a brief look over the root instructions when I first got the phone, definitely not for me at the time. I still fear I might end up bricking the phone even further if I dare attempt rooting. :(

I've a few days off this week, no better time for it I spose.

I'm assuming that other gingerbread updates for other phones went better than this one

If you are to root, then I (and others) will definately suggest reading EVERYTHING SUroot has in the guides here....then read again....and maybe read some more times to be perfectly sure.

Well bearing in mind that the Desire 2.3 update was a developer update and all others are consumer, I would say yes lol :D

Also asfar as im aware, upgrading to the 'Official' 2.3 update removes anyway to Root the phone after the update

That's me buggered then. If I've read that correctly, that means that now I've 'upgraded' to 2.3 I no longer have the option of rooting?

If I'm honest, having just a brief read thru the root info, I think it's more than a cup of tea and a few days off I'll need. Maybe a computer degree instead?

I was the one to say the comment you quoted, an its said now that you can root 2.3 by methods that I just didn't know about.

Also if you find yourself an official 2.2 HTC RUU then you should be able to 'officially' downgrade, then just root from there

it doesn't take anything near a degree....hell I only have a basic high school ICT level 2 from a decade ago and I managed lol

seriously its actually easier to root the Desire than some other phones which DO make you kinda go round the houses to get the job done.

just read up...then read again...then read again...and then if you STILL think its daunting, then message people like SUroot who will gladly help you through it so you'll be rooted....and afterwards you'll realise it wasn't that tricky at all....I should know, I was like you thinking it was way more than it really is....especially that very first boot up with your first custom ROM and it taking what seemed like FAR LONGER than it should do....bit of sweaty palms and thinking "oh sh*t I've fried it!" lol

trust us though, it *looks* far more difficult than it is....as long as you read through all the guides and talk to those who know what their doing then you should have no problems..

I should say most of the horror stories you hear of people bricking/killing their phone are from people who failed to read through and just wanted to rush through.

I recently rooted my Desire which I had previously loaded the "official" 2.3.3 update on. I used the instructions discussed in this thread: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/391086-rooting-android-2-3-3-a.html and it went well. Since then, I have also flashed a new ROM (CM7) as well. No problems at all, although SUroot et al gave me some guidance over a couple of bits I wasn't sure of. I'm sure you'll be fine, as long as you do the required reading first!

We're happy to help, this goes for anyone who has taken the time to do the reading first.

I have been trying this bit this morning, and all goes well until I realise my sd card won't show up on my computer as it's supposed to. I think I'm having trouble with drivers, even though I downloaded those mentioned in the (How To Gain S-Off, Flash a Custom Recovery, and Root Your Android Phone Using the Revolutionary Method | TheUnlockr ) article.

When I check on my pc for driver problems, it shows up 'Android 1.0' driver fault. Damned if I know to go to from there.

oops. PC no longer shows that Android driver error. What I really am having trouble with is copying over the ROOT ZIP file to my SD card. I can find no way of doing it. Agh....

firstly, an this is just my opinion...should really just stick to ROOT threads found on THIS site especially considering the members su as SUroot who have put the time in to create and help and the fact that he's always floating round so can advise on what he wrote etc..

now as to copying the zip file over....just remove your SD card from phone and just connect it via card reader or whatever to your PC and just straight copy as normal...or even just plug your phone in, select "Disk Drive" mode when it prompts you and then copy the file to the root of the SD card, simple as that.

Oh of course, I have been reading thru what's on here initially. Since my phone has 2.3 I wasn't able to just root in what seems to be the 'standard' way. I found that link above here, as a way of getting thru the block that 2.3 seems to have caused.

My main problem with the standard instructions is that I simply cannot get to the boot menu at the very start, ie pressing volume down and holding power. Using the other instructions gets me to that stage. THe next couple of bits I get stuck on, but I'm gonna leave it for a bit for now

I think I managed to do that a couple of hours ago, but haven't done anything with it since. Will have another look later

Oh, I should mention that Flash no longer works, no matter if the latest version's installed or not.

silly thing to suggest, but have you downloaded adobe flash 10.3 from the market?

I only say as some of the Roms don't have it built in as default and it needs downloading....although it seems that flash works even without it, or at least I found that in my ginger villian rom..

saying that I just downloaded it myself after realising it wasn't there lol

Yeah, got it from the market, but with no luck. Tried it several times.

Should mention that I'm still only using gingerbread. I managed to get the superuser bit after using the Revolutionary method. That's as far as I got. I still can't access the hboot menu from off, unless I'm connected to the computer and running Revolutionary at the same time.

Doesn't sound right to me.

I think I'd just happily settle for going back to froyo!

Just to chime in with my own personal experience with the upgrade...

Been running official 2.3.3 for almost a month now, and in summary, my Desire is a better phone in almost every way. The stock Gingerbread by HTC is absolutely stable (my Froyo had started getting cranky now and again in the last few months). Many of my issues with the stock Froyo I had have been banished, such as:

- frequent restarting of the Sense launcher
- Google search results failing to load
- Peep's complete failure to log in
- slow USB mounting in disk drive mode

And of course all the little additions have been welcome, like Fast Boot and snappier performance here and there. Even the flipping clock makes me smile sometimes. I'm also glad to be rid of the stuff I never used from my local Froyo firmware like Asian keyboards and telco bloatware.

The only thing that's gotten worse very slightly is the battery life, but my assessment of that isn't really accurate because my phone is usually charging over USB during the day. Other than that, no issues. :)

I wish mine had gone so well Ghibli :( I'm just wondering now if I should try loading the software from HTC again, after a factory reset, to see if that might work.

Couldn't do any harm, could it

See this is why I will unfortunately have to suffer with my "low disk space" message once every two days. Because there's a 50/50 chance that my phone will not work if I try an upgrade to 2.3

what an awful phone.

well try rooting and installing a 2.3 rom with A2SD+ scripting built in...then you will never see the "low disk space" ever again....not unless you somehow fill a 1GB partition with apps, which to be fair I think is next to tricky as balls...considering some of us have (had in my case) 200+ apps and weren't even over 500MB used on the partition..

Also I wouldn't say the phone is awful due to one oversight they made with memory allocation (i.e...not enough lol) I would say its a let down yes...not awful though by any long shot..

now nokia phones of old (yes even the 'great' n95) they were pretty awful smartphones..the samsung f700 which is deal breaking dead screen bug and ugly UI...they were awful...:D

Don't really want to root as I am not confident and don't want to lose my warranty

BOTTOM LINE: I shouldn't have to.

Sell it then! Put it on ebay. Put those CAPS to good use

Always do a lot of research before "paying alot of money for" something.

But like Dean said, its not an awful phone, it just doesn't have a lot of memory.

I still think its one of the best phones on the market.

Your bottom line, like already mentioned, you shouldnt have to. But you didnt have to buy it either.

not really much else for me to say other than what Dan said.

I will agree as well its a damn blindingly good phone...I keep saying to my other half I'll buy a better phone she can have mine...upgrade her from her wildfire...BUT...I can never bring myself to do it, because yes there are *BETTER* phones, at least specs wise...I still couldn't stand to lose mine lol
