There are a number of reasons to overclock, but if your phone is perfectly quick and smooth without it, certainly don't both overclocking. It will just drain your battery faster. Certain ROM/kernel/governor combinations are great on battery life, but can make things a little bit choppy. Overclocking can overcome that, and still provide good battery life under some circumstances. Beyond that, all it will do is boost your performance scores in things like Quadrant, which are just numbers. They don't reflect real-world performance.

Overclocking has helped (for me) using emulators and certain flash sites. It does waste battery life quicker, however, with SetCPU profiles undercocking the screen off conserves battery life quite considerably. Try using Battery Monitor Widget from the marketplace. It monitors battery usage so you can see if SetCPU if actually helping, and it's free. Good luck!

SetCPU has more settings, overclock widget will work just fine also.

It also depends on the rom you're running. Some will benefit from it and some won't. With my previous roms I would overlcock it and notice some performance gains without much loss in battery. With Mik's Froyo and Warm Z I didn't need to bc the rom's themselves were pretty fast.
