I think you know about BMX's tweet last night. So you just missed the official VZW FB page posting that they would announce when they were going to release the TB. They didnt announce they were releasing it. They only announced that they would make an announcement about the release date.

This has sent us all into speculation as to whether or not they will announce tomorrow they are releasing it Thursday.

And how sad is that, that we're reduced to listening to Verizon making an announcement saying that they will someday soon make an announcement as to what date the Thunderbolt will be available.

One more level of indirection and this is going to start to resemble One Thousand and One Nights for story embedded in story embedded in story embedded in....
 
I know people were hoping to follow the Xoom pattern with a Tuesday annoucement followed by a Thursday release but can we attribute the Xoom's Tuesday annoucement to President's Day?

I hate to sound harsh but what you are asking for is quite absurd. This just is not the way large companies behave with their intellectual property. No one wants to admit any errors or problems in public. Dirty laundry! Things like that can adversely affect their stock price. There are strict corporate rules in place preventing this exact thing. We all want honest companies and more information but it almost never in their best interest to offer any sort of full disclosure. We will get information from Verizon when they have ALL of the pieces in place and are ready to give us the launch date. Before then we will all have to satiate our thirst with the forums and unsubstantiated rumor after unsubstantiated rumor.

I agree. What we as consumers must understand is that we are not "entitled to anything". Verizon owes us nothing. Sure we want a little loyalty from them for our years of being a true customer, but seriously. The only thing Verizon has done was introduced the phone at CES. They said it would be released sometime in the first quarter of 2011 (Jan 1 - March 31). Until this passes, they are on track.

I am sure Verizon and/or HTC puts people out in the world such as BMX to build the hype among a certain subset of people. They dribble information out to us to draw us in.

Exactly. But since the public is well aware of the Dirty Laundry concept, I feel there is a boomerang effect and the real message given is the complete opposite, i.e. you guys dont have a clue how to run to run your business.
Anyway, I think that idea all began with a quick thinking PR guy somewhere that made a mistake and used that as an excuse to cover his/her butt. Probably now a VP.

The only problem is eventually the rumors turn this into a PR nightmare for the companies involved. Communication would be ideal to build a solid customer base. Apple did finally communicate with the consumers about it's poor antenna design with regards to the iPhone 4, granted it happened after much speculation and the initial communication was that users were holding it wrong. I think I'd almost rather have a smug response as opposed to no response at all.

What if the issue is copyright of the name "Thunderbolt" and the whole thing with BMX suggesting that the "Thunderbolt" will never be released? The hardware that was formally announced as the Thunderbolt might get a new name?

I believe Intel hold the copyright on the name "Thunderbolt".

Not that I am claiming to know anything about this sort of thing, but if that were the case could they even reference the ThunderBolt in their release today? They said they were excited for it too. Wouldn't they already be up bleeps creek for doing that? Again, only throwing that out there; I have no real knowledge of legal business like this.

True, but maybe the name will be a subset of Thunderbolt. Maybe Droid Thunderbolt or something like that and they are having to go back set up the royalties for using the "Droid" Branding.
