Help Gingerbread double tap words & Swype conflict

A-Pac

Newbie
Just updated to Gingerbread, and it seems like a new feature is when you double tap a word it highlights and brings up the edit text window (cut. copy, spell check, etc). The problem is, is that it conflicts with swype where you double tap a word to highlight it and bring up the word choice window. Now the word choice window never comes up because the edit text window does.

Anyone else having this problem / annoyance? Anyone know how to disable that new feature in Gingerbread?

I am running CM7 on my G2 with Swype installed, I have been trying to reproduce this on my phone, and I cant seem make it happen, anytime I double tap a word it highlights, then I tap it one more time and it copies. the only time the word choice window pops up is after I swype some words.

I should have mentioned, Im running Swype Beta. Not sure if that double tap feature is in the preinstalled versions of Swype.

Yes, I'm having the same problem, but not sure if it's gingerbread related or not. I'm on CM7 nightly 12 and this wasn't happening as far as I could recall on nightly 7, so I might revert back to that. I'm also running the latest swype beta, 2.17.59.15552.t100.

Only work around is to tap the swype key instead of double tapping the word. Couldn't find a setting to disable or delay that new pop up. Will try to post a screen shot later...

Greetings folks. Brian Resnik, Swype Community Relations Specialist and Beta Manager here. I've been in contact with some of my contacts and Google and unfortunately things don't look good for this particular issue.

Unfortunately our research into the issue hasn't gotten us very far. It appears that the changes implemented by Google can't be suppressed. That is to say, there is no way for us to programmatically intercept the double-tap event and prevent the Android cut/copy/paste window from showing up. Individual application developers can do this, but the input method doesn't have the ability to stop it. We're still looking into alternative solutions, but for now there seems to be nothing we can do.

Fortunately this issue is only present in Android 2.3.3. We've even tested it on Honeycomb and the handling is completely different so it's not a problem there.

If you know any Google developers on the Android team, feel free to poke them on our behalf about this problem.

This issue is being covered on our Bug Report forums. You can keep up to date with the developments in this thread: Double Tap brings up Android "Edit Text" menu instead of Swype word menu after update

Very nice of Brian R from Swype to respond personally. Thanks!

I didn't know the double-tap feature existed for Swype, so I always used the Swype key to get the word-alternative menu myself, as admanb just mentioned. Just an FYI from a new user.

I just figured out a solution.. Not the greatest solution, but it works for me.

Instead of double tapping like you usually do, try slowly double tapping. Maybe a second apart from the two taps? This way it only brings up the swype menu and not the android one.

I found this by accident and have started using this technique. It seems to work great!

I'm also having this issue on the Warm Z rom. The slow tap and button only workarounds work but I'd like to just disable the gingerbread popup.
