Root Rooted Desire running Ginger Vilain in a right mess after SD card partitioning - Please help?

Hi,

Network: Orange unbranded

Taskiller Used?: ES Armstrong's

[Optional]Are You rooted & which Rom: Rooted using Ginger Villain

OS: Mac OS 10.6 on Macbook Pro

Issue:
Rooted Desire running Ginger Vilain in a right mess after SD card partitioning and trying to restore app's+ data using MyBackupPro root- Please help?

Ok so I spent all day trying to understand jargon and have read sooooo many posts about each part of this journey that I have figured am going insane and just want one on one help with my issue so hoping someone can help me?

Have been running GV for a week and was fine except wasn't getting different colored LED's anymore like Froyo pre root and bluetooth was a bit dicky + main thing that is internal memory down to 8mb again from starting at 48mb when first flashed ROM so app2sd couldn't be working properly. NB. Had tried to partition with ROM Manager and had part of 512mb showing up in Quick system info under AP2SD, but it never seemed to work, e.g. storage never got used and internal cont. to go down, basically with GV ROM, it only let me move more app's across to sd card.

As had day off I wanted to do the partition properly using Gparted, as had read that was best for a clean partition. So have spent literally all Saturday trying to understand how to get Gparted running as it kept crashing on install. Finally got to the interface and partitioned as follows my 16GB SD class 6 card:1GB Ext 4 primary, 32mb Linux swap, rest FAT 32 primary so like 14GB.

It seemed to go well on test 4GB Sd card that worked in phone, so did 16GB and inserted in phone and booted.

All good I thought, phone booted fine and I was just going to go chill downstairs and set stuff up when I didn't have an app I wanted so thought i'd restore my backup's quick using Mybackup pro root.

I'd done a backup with both mybackup pro rooted and titanium free. As MBUP did batch restore, I went for that first and it seemed fine saying reboot before doing anything so I did that.

It was then that I got the dreaded boot loop or ginger villain screen and nothing I did e.g. pressing power would get me out so I had to take battery out to escape.

Tried booting into recovery (pressing power and down volume) and yet didn't really know what I was doing as a noob. From menu's tried looking for ROM to reflash but wasn't showing and had ben using ROM manager for that prev anyway so didn't know if was possible using recovery mode.

So tried clearing cache, wiping dalvik but that didn't work. Then tried clear memory from white screen and got phone to BOOT YAY!, albeit with all my settings and launcher pro gone. i.e Had to put in gmail account and language etc.

So next I think, right i'll just buy Titanium pro as my backup has screwed my system so went to market and paid. Downloaded pro key but as soon as it tried to install, the menacing ginger villain screen came back up flashing and then it went to the unlock screen. Titanium pro unlock won't install no matter what and out of 15mins refund.

Can't download any market app's so don't know what to do there? Help?

Aside from that which I need answering, does anyone think 'myback up' has done something weird, like added some 'pre ginger villain' 'Froyo 2.2 stock' type stuff or is it the partitioning I did? Neither SD card worked until I cleared internal memory.

Please help? My Saturday is destroyed! :(

Ok just reflashed ginger villain but still no joy re: market. Then went trawling through settings and into CyanogenMod settings/application. Ticked 'allow application moving' and selected 'install location' as external. Went to market and YAY! app's will install and most importantly titanium pro installed and unlocked batch command, which I'm running now.

But nooo as I wrote above, loaded TP and did batch command but none of old app's in backup on SD will come up and all have a slash through them. I tried restoring one manually and it worked but batch just ran script and then went to ... you guessed it, the ginger villain boot screen! Stayed for 10 sec's then went to unlock screen. Can't get TP to work at all. WTF has gone wrong with my phone? 9pm, been on here since 12pm. Tired so tired!

why have you put a swap between your fat and ext partition? remove that for starters.

internal should then be set as the install location. external is fat not ext.

Before you restore, you have to move dalvik cache to sd ext via terminal emulator as per the instructions in the first post of the Gingervillain thread on XDA.

If its of any use when I first installed GV the market wouldn't download, but I left it for maybe 30 minutes and it worked fine, what I personally think your best doing is starting again, like SUroot said redo your sd and only create ext and fat 32, load GV onto the root of your sd card, start into recovery and run GV, when that's done enter all your details to get the market running and download terminal emulator and run the command as per SUroots Sig, then using TB reinstall your apps. And you should be good to go.

Hi and thanks for your thoughts. I did think redoing it all would probably be advised, however after a full day of messing yesterday, I decided I couldn't be doing with it tonight after work, so will have another go tomorrow night instead.

Just to clarify, I partitioned the card in this order: 14GB (ish) Fat 32 Primary, 1GB Ext 4 Primary (in case of trying data2sd instead of ap2sd), and 32mb Linux swap. I added the Linux swap from advice on one thread I read somewhere that said some ROM's can make use of it and I didn't think it being there would harm things, even if I didn't use it. But hey ho if it's not necessary I'll get rid of it. Its just annoying that even with a USB 2 built in card reader, it takes my class 6 card ages to copy 11GB of data across i.e. 10mb every 3 sec's.

Since I last wrote I also just want to add that I went and flashed Oxygen Gingerbread ROM over GV because, even after clearing internal memory in recovery mode, (which got past the Boot loop) if I rebooted for any reason, the boot loop re-occurred again and I thought, sod it I'm sick of that GV splash screen and I may as well just give another ROM a go.

After flashing the new ROM and clearing memory again, I couldn't get the market to work again, as in, on installing an app, I would get a soft boot screen for 10 sec's and then a lock screen, but after another reboot and cleaning of memory that seems to have stopped. Perhaps it is as you say ducky1979, in that it takes a while for the market to catch up. That would make sense.

Other motes on new Oxygen ROM...

On flashing I noticed the Home key on my Desire wouldn't work and I had to back out of app's, which was annoying. I was pondering on that when phone ran out of battery and shut down. On charging and restarting, I got the boot loop on Oxygen just like GV:(

So I cleared internal memory again in recovery thinking, I just want a phone right now and an alarm for work. I haven't taken a chance and rebooted again yet to see if any improvement but I can say that the Home key now works and so I'm making a back up of this ROM on TP and will Reboot tomorrow night when I have time to handle the fall out.

Oh one last thing. Since rooting and leaving stock unrooted Froyo... in fact thinking about it since an HTC update maybe to Froyo, the LED on my phone stopped being able to turn pink or any colour other than green or orange. Now on this new Oxygen ROM it's very temperamental on notifications and still has just those two colours. Weird.

what kernel version are you using? settings>about phone. If its got .37 in the name, they are slow. go for a .35

I partitioned the card in this order: 14GB (ish) Fat 32 Primary, 1GB Ext 4 Primary
which program did you use to do this

you should really just start again imo if the rom is already in a bad state its only going to get worse not better

install location in cyanogen settings and gingervillian setup should be set to internal
a2sd is not visible on the phone directly as it being used to increase storage. you will however see it being used in "quick system info"
as long as youve got a backup of apps then thats all you need unless you have been neglecting to sync contacts with google

Ok thx. I checked and I have Kernel 2.6.37 oxygenadamg@ozone 1, Android 2.3.2

Also as I've presently moved to Oxygen to see how that pan's out, I have no settings it seems to set internal memory for app use and also wasn't sure if I have to run a script to make A2SD work.

Presently, pre-shutting down, to see if it boot loops again, I've just checked memory usage using the 'system info' app and it said A2SD: 851mb left so I downloaded a couple of app's and it now says 849mb. Looks like that may actually be working now so the proof of whether things are resolved will be if I get another boot loop on restarting. Really hope I don't as I had to put quite a few settings in today for app's I use regularly and I know I have TP but it's still a pain so lets see ay...

Oh also, any tips on best batch settings on TP to use to make sure I have everything? I've done 'Backup all user app's + system data'

Ok so reporting back on the reboot and... strangely no boot loop! I shut down and started up once and then went for a straight reboot and loaded pretty quick like in 20secs. So it looks like whatever the teething problems were, they've been resolved with three clears of the internal storage. Just need to keep monitoring the A2SD now.

Uploading some screen shots of quick system info screen and general layout I have, very basic at mo.

Sorry to butt in but just flashed gv 1.4 myself, moved the dalvik cache and set the install location to external.

If it is meant to be internal do I need to uninstall all apps and set to internal then reinstall them?

No. Set install location to internal, then go into the applications menu -> "manage applications" -> "on sd card". From there you can move apps between "phone" (internal) and "sd card" (external, but not to be confused with sd-ext). No need to uninstall and reinstall.

Thanks mate. I installed Opera Mobile and Google Earth plus a few smaller apps and they all seemed to have the same effect on memory as in LeeDroid so I assumed that I had selected the correct option.

Also explains why all my apps dissapeared when I moved my backed up files back to the SD card (ended up reflashing the rom, d'oh)

Edit: Some apps still say move to SD card rather than move to phone, these dont need moving right?

No app needs moving, unless it has widgets. For most there's also no advantage in having them on the fat partition of the SD card, and the disadvantage that you can't use them if they are on the fat partition and the phone is in usb drive mode. With gingerbread there are a few though that seem to use more real internal memory (as opposed to sd-ext) when on phone, so if you find internal storage drops significantly if you move a particular app then move it back if that's a problem. Otherwise, it's your device, you can keep them wherever works best for you.

Well the majority of apps were allready on the internal for some reason, the ones I moved to internal (including Earth which takes up quite a bit of space) only took the internal memeory from 105mb to 104mb :D
