Root Custom ROMs on the Shine Plus are finally here!

Sorry guys, I had returned the LG Shine Plus a month ago before leaving for vacation, so unfortunately I haven't made any progress with the other stuff like Apps2sd and Overclocking. Perhaps if there's enough demand we can get some guys to get the project going again.

Is there anyone here who is technically savvy enough who knows how to create a custom Shine Plus ROM with my kitchen, or on their own? I have already provided a couple of custom ROMs on the first post, but just need to know if we can get some others involved.

What do you mean "nothing happens"? - you will need to be more specific with your errors. A Nandroid backup is achieved by going through the recovery menu.. you can't do that unless you get the custom recovery image flashed. Just follow the steps carefully in the first post and you should be fine.

In general, zipaligning just modifies the *.apk file to make it start up a bit faster. Nano is a text editor like Pico which is found in Unix systems. If you have more questions let me know. Or you can Google the terminology :-)

My last question is, if the 2.2 update does become available OTA do I have to flash the stock rom back on and then unroot, and then it should work fine?

Safest thing would be to flash the stock ROM back (e.g. the version I posted that is not de-odexed) and then flash the stock recovery after that. THEN you can flash the 2.2 update.

Just do this when it's time:

1) Make Nandroid backup!
2) Flash stock ROM (not deodexed) posted in first page
3) Flash stock recovery image posted in first page
4) Your device will now be ready to take a 2.2 update


If you had a modified ROM, then the update may fail because it looks for *.odex files and the original stock files and tries to update some of them. If they are not found then it will fail the update. Also the stock updates won't work with custom recovery images.

I wouldn't worry about it, because when you flash my stock version of the ROM, it doesn't wipe your device, so your apps will still be there. Just follow my procedure above :-)

The only problem I had with the Shine Plus was that it was a bit slow. Other than that, it is a decent device.. probably the best keyboard for an Android phone. Plus it's easily hackable :-)
 
I downloaded the kitchen and stuff and was going to attempt making a custom rom but just as practice for after 2.2 comes cause i think i want to update before trying to flash another one. I'm still a bit paranoid although things went well last time.

I got stuck at the point of trying to import the stock rom to modify and then i realized i had to get back to homework. I spent a couple hours already reading and figuring out how to set up the kitchen. I also downloaded over 1gb of data in a couple hours that evening from my 5gb limit lol.

I will try to get back at it soon. I made an error somewhere along the way i think i installed something into the wrong folder.
 
I also wanted to thank dsi and getitnowmarketing for all their efforts cause i can only imagine how much of their spare time must have gone into this. I know i really didnt have any knowledge going into this but I've spent several hours just following the directions given here to get where I'm at now. After more time using the phone i can definitely say its worked better with the new rom.

Good to know!
I wouldn't worry about flashing and all, as long as you have a legitimate Nandroid backup (I have one based on stock, in case you ever need one).

i mean nothing happened as in absoleutly nothing happened, not a thing changed, the terminal emulator didnt even recognize the commands i was giving it, when i pressed enter nothing happened, thats about as clear as i know how to explain it
 
I lost phone wave and error status (can't enter status phone)after flashing the new rom. Phone => PDA. My software version is C710-V08c. I think my phone version incompatible with rom for LG shine plus.
 
Sounds like that is the problem. The software version that the rest of us have is v10c i think. Its weird that yours is different. Maybe you can update to v10d and then flash the new rom?

So has anyone else made any progress for this?

I've spent countless hours over the past few weeks going through the system files and trying to learn what this phone needs to work. Today I finally worked up the courage to try a build of CM7 that I compiled based on the ZTE Blade (same processor) and swapping out the proprietary files and editing config files as needed.

The first time I tried flashing I got a verification error and it didn't proceed. I turned off verification and tried again and it did flash. However, the phone got stuck at the Telus logo for a little bit and just rebooted into recovery.

I then tried to restore the nandroid backup I did just earlier and it failed! Thank god I did one a week or so ago, and that one worked. The difference is that the latest one I did "Nandroid + .secure" whereas the one that DID work was just "Nandroid". So for whatever reason the .secure is causing it to fail.

I also did a Titanium backup of all her important data (ie. sms, contacts, program/system data), so I was (or rather AM, as I'm doing it as I type) able to simply restore all data missing from the last week.

I'm going to keep trying, I am determined to get this thing on CM7. I'm just concerned I'm not yet skilled enough with mobile development to do this on my own.

Edit: Oh yes! My wife finally let me touch her phone. This is not even my phone, and my wife's been very weary of letting me do anything to it. When she got it she didn't even want me to root it! So, progress!
 
I hope you have some good luck with this. You are clearly a lot more knowledgeable than i am. I was able to get mine rooted and install the custom rom but i'm still not happy with the lag i get compared to playing with my girlfriends htc desire. I normally keep phones for at least 2 years but now this one has opened my eyes to other smartphones and I'm getting bored of it after 6 months. Since these phones aren't really worth anything to resell i can't afford to upgrade any time soon. Probably not for another year and a half when i can renew at 3yr prices. I would like to get this thing working well enough to keep me happy that long.

As for the reason your Nandroid failed with .secure, it's most likely due to the fact that .secure does not exist on eclair ROMs, thus it doesn't rip properly. I just do Nandroid only when I make backups.
 
If you want to boot up that Cyanogen ROM (made for the ZTE), run my kitchen and try the "port ROM" option. It will boot up almost for sure. Basically you just need to swap out the kernel with the Shine Plus' kernel to get it to boot safely. Then you need to get the drivers working.

Thanks for the source link! I just tried building the kernel they supply and it works with their included instructions (although I had to run 'repo sync' after initializing the AOSP eclair repo)

It builds just fine - and there are source files in there that are obviously related to the alohag, so it does appear to indeed be the right kernel for the Shine Plus. I'll try loading this into my phone later and report back.

The instructions for building Eclair itself seem straightforward enough from their README file. Will attempt this later.

Ya I figured as much. My wife's not too happy with me right now cause her phone isn't in a very "clean" state with me having done the old nandroid restore and then the Titanium Backup restore on top of that.

From now on I'll just do the nandroid without the .secure.

K, I think I very well may try that this Saturday. I'll be honest though, if I don't have any success in getting this going in the next week I'm not really gonna bother much. I'm planning on getting the wife a new phone for our anniversary, she's not really happy with the phone itself. However, I probably won't get rid of it right away so I may give a few more tries.

That's good to hear that it builds. I had not actually tried building it myself as most of my time was spent sifting through all the code extracting bits and pieces I suspected were the drivers, etc.

The largest problem for me is that CyanogenMod doesn't really have a "vanilla" source like the AOSP, each one of their branches is build specifically for a particular device, so I need a lot more time separating the pure Android parts from the device parts and rebuilding the source for our Shine Plus.

I'm 100% willing to work with others on this as I'm not exactly thrilled to do on my own what usually done with a team of experts.
